Algeria tops Arab countries for use of pirated software

2008-03-04

According to figures released by Business Software Alliance, a company representing the largest software makers worldwide, Algeria tops the list of Arab countries using pirated software, El Khabar reported on Tuesday (March 4th). Software piracy rates in 2006 reached 84% in Algeria, 79% in Tunisia, 73% in Lebanon, 66% in Morocco, 63% in Egypt and 61% in Jordan. In the Gulf Co-operation Council countries, the rates stood at 64% for Kuwait, 62% for Oman, 60% for Bahrain, 58% for Qatar, and 52% for Saudi Arabia. The UAE recorded the lowest rate, 35%, which is close to the global average. In response to the alarming results, the Arab League is organising the first Arab Forum for Consumer and Trademarks Protection between October 19th and 21st. The forum aims to outline a plan to combat the phenomenon.
