Algeria's Belkhadem denounces UN probe into Algiers attacks
2008-01-16
Algerian Prime Minister Abdelaziz Belkhadem criticised UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon’s decision to appoint an "independent panel of investigation" to "probe all facts" on the December 11th terrorist attacks in Algiers, APS and international press reported on Tuesday (January 15th). Speaking on the sidelines of the First Alliance of Civilisations Forum in Madrid, Belkhadem dubbed the decision a "unilateral measure" which Algeria cannot "favourably welcome". He added that "The Algerian ambassador to the UN was not consulted and Algeria's point of view was not taken into account."
Ban Ki-moon's spokeswoman Michele Montas told reporters on Monday that the Secretary General is setting up a panel of non-UN experts to investigate the bombings and that the panel would seek the Algerian authorities' full co-operation. According to Montas, the probe aims to improve security for its staff and premises not only in Algiers, but worldwide. Algeria would not be involved in the selection of the panel's staff.

Thank you for this site. My comment: Hasn’t the whole world noticed that legitimacy vanished long ago? This entity which was founded in order to establish peace has become a pretext in the hand of those monopolizing it to achieve their interests. Isn’t the non-implementation of some decisions and the implementation of others by force a form of inequality in the international community? Taking unilateral decisions is considered an injustice against weak States such as Algeria. Why set up a UN investigation committee to probe the war crimes committed by Israel in Lebanon and Palestine? Shouldn’t there be a collective withdrawal from this miserable entity which supports evil against the good; shouldn’t there be a reformation of a new international entity with new standards, or has weakness touched all countries despite their numerous numbers? Or have all States agreed to be dominated by tyranny? Thank you.

Has Mr Belkhadem grasped from the insistence of United Nations to carry on necessary investigations about attacks which targeted the staff of the United Nations in Algeria that the United Nations is accusing official Algeria of having a hand in this last target explosion?

In the name of God, the merciful, the compassionate. Firstly, I would like to pay homage to the victims of 11 December and thank the entire team at Magharebia for the efforts they have made. Most certainly, Algerians live under daily stress and no one gave a care about it until the 11 September 2001 attack. At that point, things reversed, the governments exploded, blood flowed and tears fell. But, this is not a fact of history, as this was happening well before this act: it was terrorism without politics, it was vulgar banditry. Powerful men such as these ... known throughout the world were at the root of all this. If terrorism was what they pretended it was, then they would have attacked the people at fault and not innocents. But, people do not understand that there exists neither a state of law, nor terrorism. This is the paradox of the race for power--a power that is both uncertain and has threatened our lives day after day. You know, if you murder one man you are a criminal, if you murder a thousand, you become a hero. Salamu alaikum.
