Aljazeera withdraws poll following protest of Algerian journalists

2007-12-23

Aljazeera television withdrew a poll posted on its web site following a controversy it sparked in Algeria, Ech Chourouk reported on Saturday (December 22nd). After the deadly twin al-Qaeda claimed blasts on December 11th in Algiers, a poll from the Qatari-based channel asked, "Do you support al-Qaeda's attacks in Algeria?" Only 42% of the 30,000 participants reportedly disagreed with the terrorism acts.

Algerian media, led by the national TV (ENTV) condemned what they said were "unprofessional" practices by the news channel. Reportedly, Algerian reporters working for Aljazeera also called upon their managers to address "official apologies to the Algerian people", launch an inquiry and "punish the people in charge of this blunder."

Several organisations, such as Victims of the Algerian Islamist Terrorism, decided to start legal actions against Aljazeera, El Watan reported. They called on the Arab League, the African Union, the African Committee of Human Rights and national and international NGOs to support them in their efforts to stop what they said were attempts of advocating Islamist terrorism. The National Union of Algerian Women (UNFA) also joined the protest.

"Al Khanzeera" [the pig] channel is the podium of Al Qaeda and terrorism.

mohamed Posted 2007-12-24

You have failed theoretically and on the ground. You will only bring more occupation to your future generations, fools! By this irrational zeal and extremism you are only destroying the house of Muslims and initiating a new wave of crusades forever again. I am a proud Algerian but the body parts and the haunting images of those innocent people ...Hell no! I will NOT believe in you...just like patriotism has been converted to a class of geography, you have converted Islam to a nation of extremism...fear your lord...to be continued.

محمد Posted 2007-12-24

Al Jazeera is the channel of terrorism.

becharelkhir Posted 2007-12-26

Hi Everyone. Your magazine has one of the prettiest signs: Magharebia. But, what is it!? Keep your hopes up. Good work.

عبدالرزاق الجزائري Posted 2007-12-27

Salam alaikoum. I have loved Al Jazeera channel so much and became addicted to its love, for no other reasons but because I'm addicted to thriller movies. In its reality, it's a thriller contending like others to get the Oscar. It won't get that unless it puts the pieces of the bodies of the martyrs of the capital (victims) in the picture of criminals to make the film more entertaining. And of course the number of viewers, but it's the opposite which happens. So fear God, Algeria isn't a stage and its sons aren't actors.

sabrina Posted 2007-12-27

Salam alaikoum. Al Jazeera channel is one of the most important channels which works hard on spreading terrorism on Earth, may God not grant it success.

عبدالرحيــم Posted 2007-12-28

Analysts and commentators lose their minds when there's a discussion about terrorism...And namely when there's question of religious terrorism...You rarely read an impartial comment or analysis about the phenomenon of terrorism which is widely-spread in our Islamic and Arab countries...As if there's a tacit consensus to tackle this topic just from one side...The position of condemning and reproving...accusation...without any attempt to search objectively for the causes which lead to the resurgence of violence in our countries...When the physician finds the cause of a disease in the patient, the most important thing for him is to know the causes which led to the diseases... Are we going to follow the same method while tackling a social disease which is spreading at a high level, it's the attitude of a high number of people to express their positions with violence...and terrorism...??? The objective realities show that the consecutive Arab regimes play a role in the outspread of the violence in our 'Islamic' countries...So let's go to the core of the issues, which is the source of its danger...to discuss the real causes for the emergence of an ideological movement that adopts violence as a method...to express itself...I propose for discussion one of the most important causes which contributed and is contributing to the development of the violence phenomenon...which, even we condemn it and describe its authors of terrorism and barbarism...We are called to search for the causes which pushed them to this...destructive method...of the whole nation...

بن مرزوقة محمد توفيق Posted 2007-12-30

We are the ones to blame not Aljazeera. Cursing the channel will not undermine its power as the proveb goes: Nature fears bordem". If Algeria had a powerful and independent press, no such thing would have happened. the media policy must be changed in Algeria so that to fulfill the aspirations of the people. Algeria is froght with human and material potential, only the political will, the real deal, is missing.

Anonymous Posted 2007-12-30

I am against it

mohammed Posted 2007-12-30

Long live Al Jazeera!

ghania Posted 2007-12-31

The news channel Al Jazeera which is the media platform for Arabs, is the platform we support because of its audacious media vision which presents us the news as Arabs and also to the west. But the express attack against everything human through an opinion poll which is surprised us, is it reasonable that such questions are made to be an opinion poll platform, is the blood of Algerians equal to that price for a channel. I consider that most of its public are of those, I just ask the officials in this channel to present an official apology to the sons of this audacious nation which condemn all forms of violence wherever it is.

رشيد Posted 2007-12-31

Al Jazeera channel brought shame to the Arab citizen because it considered that the blood of Algerians is cheap, I consider it a pro-Israel channel.

جزائري Posted 2008-01-01

By God who is One, no one explain the real meaning of terrorism because it's in reality something barbaric which can't be valued with figures or places or origins. And as to what came on Al Jazeera, this poll is just a propaganda and as the saying goes 'Be different in order to gain fame'.

ALI ALILOU Posted 2008-01-04

Your initiative is excellent. We hope this will continue on for a long time. As for Aljazeera’s poll, that some people are in favour of the bombings is condemnable. And, for those journalists at ENTV in Algeria, may they do they job first of all and inform the people, rather than being the spokespeople of the Oujda clan, i.e. Bouteflika and his cohorts. -Thank you

لخضر Posted 2008-01-06

I defy Al JAzeera channel to present an opinion poll (Do you support the attacks of Hamas on Israel)

iugrkd Posted 2008-01-06

go away

كريم الشاوي Posted 2008-01-08

Why doesn’t Al Jazeera channel talk about Qatar which is normalizing relations with Israel, or the Arab peninsula which has become the property of Al Saoud who make of it what they want. I hate Al Jazeera, and if I could, I would have put in it….so that nothing remains of it. Then I will publish a poll what do you think. Many terrorist things have developed because of Al Jazeera as if it was supporting terrorism. Reporters of Al Jazeera should know and understand that they’re Muslims, therefore, they cannot follow the method of the BBC. May be if the father or a relative of that reporter died in the attack, he would have been more humane. God suffices us and He’s the best protector.

double-kanon Posted 2008-01-08

Shame on the Al Jazeera terrorist channel. It's a shame on Al Jazeera channel to offend Algerians to this point. If denial of brotherhood and sowing tumult in Algeria is professionalism, then there's no other professional channel except Al Jazeera. Shame on them, God is our protector against them.

غيور على الجزائر Posted 2008-01-09

In the name of God. Al Jazeera channel is always trying to stir up Algerians, both government and people. The recent opinion poll conducted by the channel 'The opinion, and opposite opinion...' is just one of the numerous despising attitudes shown by this instigator towards the son of the one nation, no coverage of Al Jazeera in Algeria, no to the offices of Al Jazeera in Algeria...

lila Posted 2008-01-11

This act made by Al Jazeera channel will remain a shameful stain on the forehead of the Arab media. This shows that it encourages terrorism under the cover of an opinion poll.

lasser Posted 2008-01-12

In response to Ali in my real name Nasser, it is a shame that you are not a Nasser. As for the poll, it is a shame to commercialise on your brothers' blood, be they Algerian or otherwise. Our revolution is exemplar and you all have gained from it. We have problems, namely with wealth and livelihood, but they are OUR problems. Why don’t you please help us by keeping quiet, Aljazeera. -Bye

amazighi Posted 2008-01-13

You were unveiled and the real face of Al Jazeera appeared, God suffices us and He is the best protector

عبد القادر الجزائري Posted 2008-01-18

Salam alaikoum. I think that Al Jazeera channel was wrong because it didn’t understand the reality of terrorism in Algeria. The latter doesn’t know its enemy well and doesn’t differentiate between civilian and military targets. therefore, I ask Al Jazeera to rectify its mistake, that’s all. I also ask the Algerian brothers not to be hasty in judging the channel because it’s considered the only free tribune on the Arab World and regional level. Salam alaikoum.

hajji Posted 2008-01-18

A call to Al Jazeera: don’t talk much about futile things in the eyes of the people.

زين الجزائري Posted 2008-01-19

Our religion says ‘If you kill a soul without other souls, it is as though you killed all the people, and if you save it, it is as though you saved all humanity'...Why do the stupid choose to serve their enemy in the best way it likes...Why do you serve their enemies and the enemy of Algeria without any recompense...The stupid are like that...

الجزائر حرة Posted 2008-01-20

May God curse the oppressors. We rely on God, God suffices us and He's the best protector.

زعيمي Posted 2008-01-28

In the name of God. What has the program ‘Opinion vs. opinion’ done against the land irrigated by the blood of a million and a half martyrs? It’s a crime against these pure souls who sacrificed their lives to raise the word of right in Algeria. The sons of martyrs are still sacrificing their souls to support religion on this pure land against which obscurants exerted all their efforts to destroy it. People with the right are steady in their faces, and a channel, considered by most people as an alternative for what the nations have pledged, but I’m so sorry for this media which is serving the enemies and obscurant killers.

امين Posted 2008-02-05

In the name of God, what I understood from this poll is the stupidity of the reporters of Al Jazeera. If that's not the case, Al Jazeera must be hating the nation of Algeria both people and government. I advise you to put limits to your freedom of the press people of Al Jazeera. Thank you.

A popular political discussion on the Western Sahara needs to be opened; there are people who are suffering. Thank you

سمية Posted 2008-03-08

Long live Algeria.

فاروق الجزائري Posted 2008-03-09

In the name of God, most gracious most merciful. To Al Jazeera channel, review yourselves, care for duty to God, don’t trade in the lives of innocents, because in this way you are encouraging terrorism and more bloodshed as the Prophet (peace and prayer be upon him) said: "If you believe in God and the Last Day, say something good or keep quiet."

سمير Posted 2008-03-12

Algeria is a failing country in all sectors but I love Algeria however it is.

akermie Posted 2008-03-14

I suppose that this poll is a blunder (for lack of calling it an absurdity). A lot of our hopes were based on this channel, but, alas, we have been disappointed.

عبد القادر Posted 2008-03-20

Terrorism has no religion or country, it is the duty of all countries to fight it.

Moufakhir Posted 2008-04-06

Hi! To err is human. I support Aljazeera and I believe in Aljazeera. Do not be ridiculous, ladies and gentlemen. You cannot silence the truth by being aggressive against this channel. To those who want this: this is the only form of media in the global media landscape that succeeded in standing up against the law of silence led by CNN, CBS and other Sky News networks. And, these are indeed pro-Israeli channels. This is the only channel in the world that has acquired for us another soundboard other than the one that comes from the White House and the CIA. Of course, Aljazeera played the fool in this blow-out and, of course, Aljazeera needs to make amends for this folley and redeem itself with the Algerians, but, in the end, Aljazeera will always be Aljazeera! A word to the wise!

HAKIM Posted 2008-04-07

A country that calls itself democratic and is self-respecting should accept Al Jazeera on its soil. Only dictators do not like freedom of expression and this channel very much. They interfere in their internal affairs and say that they have at least a dozen journalists at Al Jazeera who have been professionally and physically transformed by this channel... This channel is a benchmark...

amel Posted 2008-06-10

You are jealous! But why? Pay attention to Qatar! Algeria is a good state and it has had good results, but you never speak about them. We are not brothers! Why always against us? The Arabs agreed to disagree!

ecoeure Posted 2008-07-24

In Response to Moufakir (6 April 2008): I would say that Aljazeera is just a satellite of CNN, CBS and other Sky News networks, though it is camouflaged. This just happens to be the best time for the oppressed, because it discloses everything. The ogre of terrorism and, even more so, religion has no friend at its side: it feeds off of the idiocy of those who back it in order to destroy them definitively. Your turn will come and your flesh will be stricken. I do not wish this upon you, but may you get what you deserve.

tabarem Posted 2008-08-29

I think of Al Jazeera as one of the Zionists. Did it not support the regimes of Qatar and Saudi Arabia, both sources of Jewish funding? Did it not support the regimes that supported the Americans in the destruction of Iraq? Algeria is stronger then you, oh people of Al Jazeera. Algeria resisted various invaders since the day of time, and it is not now that it is going to abdicate given all its petrodollars.
