UN Staff Union calls for independent investigation of Algiers bombing

2007-12-20

The UN Staff Union, representing 22,000 UN workers around the world, called for an independent probe Wednesday (December 19th) into the bomb attack on its Algiers building which killed 17 employees, Reuters reported. Shortly after UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon spoke to UN staff in New York about his visit to the two attack sites in Algiers, the employee union called for an investigation into whether security was adequate at its Algeria offices. The group also questioned why the security threat was at its lowest level on December 11th, the day of the bombings.

here we go again. the "qui tue qui" motto is resurfacing thanks to whom? i wonder. some people are not convinced yet that there are evil individuals operating under the 'false' banner of Islam. let us assume the security was not adequate, and so what? nothing will bring back the dead. By the way, 11th of December is a remembrance day in Algeria, which may explain the security lax. Punish, discipline the security services? these guys have been battling that evil hydra for now 15 years and too many of their elements were killed in action. Blaming them does not good. independent probe? what the heck is that? perhaps they should have called for an independent probe of the tragic 9/11 events in NYC (at least). in fact what the UN union, or whoever represents them, is trying to say is:"We bet the security services colluded with terrorists, hence the lax protection". the UN is a bunch of highly-paid individuals, some sort of untouchables, who spend their time attending meetings and traveling to exotic places (preferably) using people's money. they are money-suckers and the results of their 'efforts' are meager. if they want security beefed up they should ask for it and pay for it i suppose. I do not have in high regard the role that the UN plays. It is also true that the Minister of Interior muddied waters since, arrogant as he is, he claimed that he knew that the UN was a potential target. Perhaps those statements triggered the call by the union.

In response to you, sir(s): If there had been an "independent probe" into the assassination of President Boudiaf, we wouldn't be here now!!!
