Morocco may end death penalty
2007-12-05
Moroccan Justice Minister Abdelwahed Radi said Morocco is close to abolishing the death penalty, MAP reported. Speaking after a government meeting Tuesday (December 4th), the minister acknowledged the complexities of the issue but said capital punishment is no longer acceptable. He pointed out that the Penal Code has already reduced crimes eligible for the death penalty from 22 to 11. Only two of the 133 people sentenced to death since 1973 have been executed, Radi noted. The last execution was 14 years ago.
