IMF urges Algeria to accelerate economic reforms
2007-11-07
At a press conference in Algiers, Amar Tahari, deputy director of the IMF Middle East and Central Asia department, called on Algeria to "accelerate the economic reforms" and to solve the problem with unemployment, Algerian press reported on Monday (November 5th). "The purpose of the economic reforms is to come to a level of economic growth enough for the creation of jobs," Tahari said. He hailed the quality of the reforms launched in Algeria, but underlined that GDP growth, which stands at 4.8% currently, will remain insufficient in the next years. A 5.2% growth is expected for 2008, while 7% is recommended by IMF in order to reach concrete objectives.

Firstly, I don’t think that the economic integration can be achieved under the political division. It is taken for granted that the decision-maker remains first and foremost a politician. Therefore, political unity should be achieved and remove all obstacles to the Maghreb union by starting from firm foundations which prevent the achievement of this union. Economic integration is moved by political interests. Professor Zaoui Rafiq.
