Algeria earmarks 900m euros for space programme
2007-10-24
Algeria has earmarked nearly 900m euros into its space programme for the 2006-2020 period, local press quoted Minister of Postal Services and Information and Communication Technologies Boudjemaa Haichour as saying on Tuesday (October 22nd). Speaking at a conference on the role of space technology in climate change and adaptation in Africa, Azzedine Oussedik, General Manager of the Algerian Space Agency, said the country plans to use space technologies to fight desertification and protect the environment. "Two new satellites – Alsat 2A and Alsat 2B – will be launched respectively at the beginning of 2008 and 2009," Ansa quoted Oussedik as saying. The first Alsat 2 project was launched in January 2006. Reportedly, the Arzew space research centre is building the second satellite without foreign participation. Britain supported Algeria's initial space ambitions with the Alsat 1 satellite project in 2002, which cost $11m.
