Heavy rains and floods claims 14 lives in Algeria

2007-09-23

Torrential rains and floods have swept over several parts of Algeria in the past week, claiming 14 lives, Algeria's civil protection agency said Saturday (September 22nd). In M'sila province 270 kilometres south of Algiers, a rise in the water level of the Mesrane River swept away eight members of a family inside their vehicle. Nearby, three members of a family died when their clay house collapsed because of the heavy rains. Three more people drowned in Maskyanah village in Batna. According to Algerian authorities, the rains also caused extensive material damage, destroying many houses and two bridges and blocking several main roads east of the capital.
