Algeria among first to be inspected by UN Human Rights Council
2007-09-23
The UN Human Rights Council announced on Friday (September 21st) that Great Britain, India and Algeria would be the first countries it would inspect under new rules which entitle the body to scrutinize its members each year. Brazil, Morocco, South Africa, Tunisia, Bahrain, Indonesia, the Philippines, Argentina, Ecuador, the Netherlands, Finland, Poland and the Czech Republic are also to be reviewed at the council's spring 2008 session.
The 47-member council was created in March 2006 to replace the Human Rights Commission, which lost the international community's trust due to alleged bias after a series of critical reports targeting Israel. The council's conclusions are to be based on official human rights situation reports from each country's government and on the assessment of experts and non-governmental groups.
