Algeria's religious ministry urges imams to speak out against terrorism
2007-09-19
Algeria's Ministry of Religious Affairs issued a directive urging all of the country's imams to mobilize and denounce terrorism, El Khabar reported Tuesday (September 18th). The move follows recent terrorist attacks in the country that claimed more than 60 lives. A major impetus for the directive was the discovery that terror groups are attracting minors for their suicide bombings. The ministry's campaign aims to raise public awareness of the dangers of joining terrorist groups, and intends to capitalize on the elevated number of prayers during the holy month of Ramadan.
