2007-08-17

Applications to register candidates for Morocco's September 7th parliamentary elections will be accepted beginning Friday (August 17th), MAP quoted a Moroccan Interior Ministry statement as saying. Under the current electoral law, any person wishing to run for a parliamentary seat must be registered on an electoral ticket, be at least 23 years of age on the day of the election and must not have been declared ineligible for election in accordance with parliament's organic law, the statement added. The electoral campaigns will begin on August 25th and end on September 6th. The expected number of eligible voters is 15,510,505.

In a joint statement with the Justice Ministry, the Interior Ministry said they have already received and begun examining more than 140 election offences related to pre-electoral campaigns, disregard for election regulations, the purchase of votes, the use of violence and threats against voters and the use of public resources for party gatherings.
