Terrorists sentenced to prison terms in Tunisia
2007-03-27
A Tunisian criminal court sentenced 18 defendants charged with belonging to a terrorist organisation, recruiting for jihad, fundraising and planning terrorist attacks, said defence lawyer Samir Ben Amor on Monday (March 26th). The trial against terror suspects linked to the Algerian former Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC), ended Saturday, the lawyer said. Four suspects, tried in absentia, received 24-year prison terms, while the other 14 were sentenced to four to ten years in jail. Seven of the detainees were arrested in Algeria, where they allegedly underwent military training in GSPC camps. Some of them confessed to having planned to travel to Europe or to Iraq to join the insurgency, although most pleaded innocent. (AP, Reuters)
