EC diplomat killer sentenced to death in Sale
2007-02-21
The criminal tribunal in Sale on Tuesday (February 20th) handed out a death penalty to Karim Zimach, convicted of murdering European Commission (EC) diplomat Alessandro Missir di Lusignano and his wife Arianne Lagazze on September 19th, 2006. Zimach has confessed to committing the crime under the influence of drugs.
European Justice and Security Commissioner Franco Frattini expressed his hope that the Moroccan authorities "will revise their decision, should the sentence be confirmed." According to Frattini, the EC, which opposes the death penalty, "will demand the suspension of the execution and a revision of the ruling." Morocco has not performed an execution since 1993. Earlier this month, Secretary General of the Consultative Committee on Human Rights Driss Benzekri announced that the country would abolish capital punishment later this year.
