Spanish police arrests suspected terrorist

2007-02-06

Spanish police on Monday (February 5th) arrested a suspected member of the Algeria-based Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC), which allegedly recruited suicide bombers in Iraq, Morocco and Algeria, the Spanish Interior Ministry said. The suspect, Mbark El Jaafari, who is wanted by Morocco under an international warrant, was arrested in Reus. According to the ministry, El Jaafari is an "alleged member of a terrorist structure that serves Al Qaida and the GSPC. The structure is in charge of recruiting volunteers for 'Jihad' in Morocco, Iraq and Algeria." Reportedly, El Jaafari will go before Spain's National Court -- a first step before possible extradition. (MAP, Xinhua, DPA)
