Algerian National Council discusses draft budget
2006-11-15
The Algerian National Council discussed the 2007 draft budget on Tuesday (November 14th), Liberte reported, with senators criticising tax measures aimed at reducing value-added tax (VAT) on liquefied petroleum products and services from 17% to 7%. Some senators said such measures would discriminate against other sectors and questioned Finance Minister Mourad Medelci on the criteria he used to select the activities for which the VAT would be reduced.
Senators also urged the government to strengthen the fight against corruption and for reallocation of public funds. The government additionally was criticised for the high dependence of the economy on oil revenues and its failure to diversify. Senators also asked about the government programme for land utilisation through funds for national agricultural development and demanded explanations for rising prices of agricultural goods.
Satisfaction was expressed with the recent government decision to hike public sector wages, the adoption of the economic and social pact and the clear improvement of the macroeconomic and financial indicators. The draft budget will be voted on by the senate next Tuesday. (Liberte)
