Algerian customs agents seized around 220,000 litres of fuel, which smugglers tried to transport through the western and southern borders of the country, in the first half of this year. According to customs' data released on Monday (14 August), the value of the smuggled fuel is estimated at 4.1m dinars. The fines imposed on smugglers amount to 192m dinars.

Officials say the incidence of smuggled fuel jumped to 842 in 2005 from 488 in 2004, due mainly to the significant fuel price differential between the domestic market and neighbouring countries, especially after hikes in international crude oil prices. (La Nouvelle Republique)
