Morocco's Princess Lalla Meryem launched a national immunisation campaign against measles and rubella, as part of efforts to eradicate the two diseases by 2010, on Monday (9 January) in Haouz province. Hundreds of thousands of schoolchildren will now be vaccinated against the diseases. After launching the campaign, the 44-year-old princess, who is chairwoman of the National Observatory of Children's Rights, also launched the new Dar Al Oumouma health centre, which will provide prenatal and postnatal care for as many as 800 women a year. Princess Lalla, who was nominated as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador five years ago, previously opened a regional centre for women and children victims of violence. (MAP, FemaleFirst.co.uk)

The vaccination will be against measles and rubella (rubella is the German measles) and not smallpox which was eradicated years ago.
