Morocco allocates 200m euros for small-scale fishing
2006-01-12
On Tuesday (10 January) in Rabat, the Moroccan Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries unveiled a budget of nearly 200m euros for the development of small-scale fishing, which accounts for 60 per cent of the nation's fresh fish exports. The move is part of the National Human Development Initiative (INDH) and is intended to improve the situation of 126,000 small-scale fishermen.
Launched by King Mohammed VI in May 2005, INDH has a budget of 1 billion euros over the next five years. The Moroccan government will provide 60 per cent of the funds, while local communities and international cooperation will give 20 per cent each. The programme will be used to consolidate infrastructure for the reception and distribution of sea products, construct fishing villages and create landing sites along the Moroccan coast.
