EU earmarks 1m euros to support human rights projects in Morocco
2005-12-22
The EU has earmarked around 1m euros to support human rights associations in Morocco, the European delegation in Rabat announced in a press release. The funds are granted as part of the European Initiative for Democracy and Human Rights (EIDR) and will finance up to 90 per cent of projects pertaining to promoting human rights culture or promoting the democratic process. Eligibility for funds is reserved for non-profit NGOs, state-owned higher education institutions and Moroccan-based media outlets.
In 2004, 11 Moroccan NGOs benefited from subsidies totaling 1m euros to set up activities meant to promote human rights. The EIDHR programme provides approximately 100m euros per year, which are distributed evenly between different world regions. (MAP, delmar.cec.eu.int)
