Students From Maghreb in US High Schools
2004-11-16
The Partnerships for Learning Youth Exchange and Study programme, a US Department of State-funded scholarship programme, affords secondary students from countries with large Muslim populations the opportunity to live and study in the United States for a full academic year, to serve as cultural ambassadors for their countries and to learn about American customs.
AYUSA International and AMIDEAST administer the programme, launched in March 2003. Nearly 5,000 students sought admission for the 2004/2005 academic year. Applicants are from Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Jordan, Israel, West Bank/Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Yemen, Nigeria and Egypt, among others. The programme will soon be expanded to include India, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Qatar. (US State Department)
