three per cent of the country's children do not attend school
Algerian Education Minister Boubekeur Benbouzid says compulsory education for all school age children is a top priority in reforming the country's education system. At a national meeting of school administrators Monday (8 November), Benbouzid said three per cent of the country's children do not attend school because parents decide not to send them. "By next year, the law will decide on the cases of some parents who stop or prohibit their children from going to school," Benbouzid said. He added that 2008 would be decisive because primary school will be shifted from six to five years and secondary school from three to four years to allow for a higher number of students. (APS)
