Morocco Extends Teaching of Berber in Schools

Morocco has moved to boost teaching of the Berber language, Amazigh, by changing the main language of instruction in 930 schools for the year 2004-2005. Education Minister Habib El Malki told parliament Wednesday (20 October) that the plan will be extended by 2008 both to primary and secondary schools. As of 2006, there will be a 20 per cent increase in the number of schools and 33 per cent in the number of colleges teaching in Amazigh. (albawaba.com)
