On Tuesday (2 November) the IMF said it completed discussions with the Algerian government under Article IV of the IMF's Articles of Agreement. The discussions covered current economic policies, as well as the medium-term economic outlook. According to the IMF, real GDP is expected to increase by approximately 5.5 per cent in 2004. In addition, the dramatic rise in oil prices has further strengthened Algeria's financial position on the international stage.
In a related development, Minister of Industry Hachemi Djaboub said Algeria expects $6 billion to $7 billion in foreign direct investment over the next five years. (IMF, Le Soir d'Algerie)
