Algerian Entry to WTO on Hold

According to WTO representative Emmanuelle Ganne, Algeria still must complete a series of structural reforms before it joins the WTO. After a meeting in Geneva to discuss Algeria's WTO status, Ganne said it would be at least a year before Algeria can join the 147-country organisation. Algerian officials were quoted in the local press as saying this confirms an advanced stage of negotiations and not a setback.

WTO officials point out that Algeria needs to focus more on privatisation, the pharmaceutical trade and international investment standards. Despite WTO suggestions, Algeria's Minister of Industry Nourredine Boukrouh said multilateral negotiations are "at an advanced stage". However, WTO representative Joseph Bosch said multilateral negotiations are at an "intermediary stage". (menareport.com)
