Providing over 200,000 jobs, Tunisia’s textile industry is one of its major economic sectors and has growth potential. However, an official with the Tunisian Textile Dealers Association voiced fears Wednesday (27 October) that as the multi-fiber agreement with the EU draws to a close this year, the Tunisian textile industry will face setbacks.

the reimposition of tariffs will raise prices and cause Tunisia to lose its comparative advantage

Eighty per cent of Tunisian textiles are exported to Europe and the reimposition of tariffs will raise prices and cause Tunisia to lose its comparative advantage over Chinese competition. The effects of international competition are already being felt by Tunisia. Textile industry growth fell from 10 per cent a year between 1997 and 2001, to only 1 per cent in recent years.
