Billions of Euros Dormant in Moroccan Banks
2004-10-27
Moroccan Minister of the Economy Rachid Talbi Alami announced that over 7.5 billion euros are dormant in Moroccan banks. The euros are neither used in transactions nor are invested. “We do not yet know how to use the remittances of Moroccan expatriates who transfer 3.4 billion euros a year,” the minister said in an interview with Liberation. He also said Bank Al-Maghrib, the national exchange office, the department of investments and the Mohammed VI Solidarity Foundation are trying to assess how the remittances are utilised.
