IMF Reflects on Algerian Budget

According to the IMF delegation in Algeria since 6 October, the 2005 budget law marks a milestone in public finance management. The IMF concluded that the new budget is a step towards controlling public finances and, if properly implemented, can lead to a manageable public deficit. Erik de Vrijer, head of a the IMF delegation to Algeria, said the new budget should ensure a better sharing of fiscal responsibility to keep inflation down. De Vrijer indicated that there is still more need for structural changes to ensure a growth environment for the private sector. In particular, he reiterated the urgent need for banking sector reform.
