Cost of Mobile Phones in Algeria Declines
2004-10-22
Major changes occurred in 2000 with the passage of a law regulating the postal and telecommunications sector
The prices of mobile phones in Algeria started to fall in October, particularly following the recent entry of the country's third operator, Huawei, the daily El Massa reported Friday (22 October). According to the newspaper, the country's mobile phone market has undergone significant development in the past years, while the permanent telephony sector lags behind. Major changes occurred in 2000 with the passage of a law regulating the postal and telecommunications sector. It established the rules of competition and removed the monopoly of the State Postal and Telecom Agency, creating a regulatory agency called Autorité de Régulation de la Poste et des Télécommunications.
