On Sunday (31 October) the President of Algeria, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, awarded Algerian singer Warda with the National Order of Merit medal at a ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of the 1954 Algerian Revolution. Warda was born outside of Paris in July 1940. Her father, one of the first Algerian immigrants to France, ran a hostel for migrant workers at Boulogne-Billancourt. Warda arrived in Algeria after it won independence and soon earned a reputation for singing patriotic songs. (albawaba)
