Moroccan track and field star and Olympic champion Hicham El Guerrouj received Spain's prestigious Prince of Asturias award late last week. During the ceremony, Prince Felipe of Asturias praised El Guerrouj’s athleticism as well as his committment to the poor and to young people, saying he is "admired throughout the world and rightly loved in his own country, where his exemplary life and his sporting triumphs are heralded as a shining indication of a more dynamic and prosperous Morocco, which we also wish for them".
El Guerrouj, who won the 1500m and 5000m gold medals at the Athens Olympics in August, is considered the best middle-distance runner of his generation. While in Spain, he signalled plans to retire during 2005, saying his upcoming appearance at the world athletics championships in Helsinki would be his "last official appearance with the national team".
