In a historic speech delivered at Cairo University on Thursday (June 4th), US President Barack Obama addressed the sources of tension between the US and the Islamic world, affirming that "America is not at war with Islam" and calling for a "new beginning".
"I have come here to seek a new beginning between the United States and Muslims around the world… one based upon the truth that America and Islam are not exclusive, and need not be in competition. Instead, they overlap, and share common principles – principles of justice and progress; tolerance and the dignity of all human beings," he said.
Obama highlighted the achievements of Islamic culture in math and science, as well as Muslims' contributions to American culture and society. He noted that the first nation to recognise the United States was Morocco, a Muslim nation.
He said that partnership between America and Islam must be based on what Islam is, not what it isn't, adding that, "just as Muslims do not fit a crude stereotype, America is not the crude stereotype of a self-interested empire."
Obama said that his country is not at war with Islam but will "relentlessly confront violent extremists who pose a grave threat to [US] security."
The American president said that violent extremists have exploited tensions between the US and Muslims – tensions that he said were fed by colonialism, the Cold War and the "sweeping change" brought by modernity and globalisation.
He said their actions are "irreconcilable with the rights of human beings, the progress of nations, and with Islam. The Holy Qur'an teaches that whoever kills an innocent, it is as if he has killed all mankind; and whoever saves a person, it is as if he has saved all mankind. The enduring faith of over a billion people is so much bigger than the narrow hatred of a few. Islam is not part of the problem in combating violent extremism – it is an important part of promoting peace. "
He acknowledged that the fear and anger that the September 11th attacks provoked in the US led to actions contrary to American ideals. "We are taking concrete actions to change course. I have unequivocally prohibited the use of torture by the United States, and I have ordered the prison at Guantanamo Bay closed by early next year. "
The president drew applause after greeting the audience in Arabic and quoting from the Holy Qur'an four times.
The speech was broadcast live on television and streamed live on the internet and on Facebook, where many in the US and the Muslim world exchanged comments as it unfolded. Many hailed the speech as "historic" and called for continued dialogue between America and the Muslim world.
The president addressed several issues that he said are sources of tension when it comes to how Muslims view the United States, including Iraq and the Arab-Israeli conflict.
He said the war in Iraq "reminded America of the need to use diplomacy and build international consensus to resolve our problems whenever possible," vowing to "support a secure and united Iraq as a partner, and never as a patron."
Obama also spoke of the suffering endured by both Palestinians and Israelis, "two peoples with legitimate aspirations, each with a painful history that makes compromise elusive." He said the only resolution is for the aspirations of both sides to be met through two states, where Israelis and Palestinians each live in peace and security. He called on Palestinians to abandon violence and on Israelis to take concrete steps to enable progress in the daily lives of the Palestinian people.
"All of us have a responsibility to work for the day when the mothers of Israelis and Palestinians can see their children grow up without fear; when the Holy Land of three great faiths is the place of peace that God intended it to be; when Jerusalem is a secure and lasting home for Jews and Christians and Muslims."
On the issue of nuclear proliferation, Obama reaffirmed America's commitment to "seek a world in which no nations hold nuclear weapons".
The president also addressed the issues of democracy, religious freedom, and women's rights.
He said that while "no system of government can or should be imposed upon one nation by any other", governments that support universal ideas such as the rule of law, transparency and personal freedoms are "ultimately more stable, successful and secure".
He criticised those who "advocate for democracy only when they are out of power", noting that "elections alone do not make true democracy".
Addressing a mixed audience of young Egyptian men and women from various political and religious beliefs, Obama called for upholding religious diversity and reviving the spirit of tolerance that existed in Andalusia and in countries like Indonesia, where he said he saw Christians worshipping freely in an overwhelmingly Muslim country. He also called on Western countries to "avoid impeding Muslim citizens from practicing religion as they see fit."
Obama rejected the view of some in the West that women who choose to wear the hijab are less equal. "But I do believe that a woman who is denied an education is denied equality," he said, adding his belief that "Our daughters can contribute just as much to society as our sons".
The US president noted that his country supports several literacy and entrepreneurial programs for Muslim women.
On economic development, Obama said that no development strategy can be based only upon what comes out of the ground – in reference to oil – nor can it be sustained while young people are out of work. He called on all to "recognise that education and innovation will be the currency of the 21st century, and in too many Muslim communities there remains underinvestment in these areas."
The US president said his country is now seeking broader engagement with the Muslim world by expanding student exchange programmes, and creating business partnerships with Muslim-majority countries.
A new fund will support technological development in Muslim-majority countries, and to help transfer ideas to the marketplace so they can create jobs. "The US will also open centres of scientific excellence in Africa, the Middle East and Southeast Asia, and appoint new Science Envoys to collaborate on programs that develop new sources of energy, create green jobs, digitize records, clean water, and grow new crops."
"I know there are many – Muslim and non-Muslim – who question whether we can forge this new beginning," Obama told the crowd. "Many more are simply sceptical that real change can occur… But if we choose to be bound by the past, we will never move forward. And I want to particularly say this to young people of every faith, in every country – you, more than anyone, have the ability to re-imagine the world, to remake this world."

Obama is magnificent - a statesman with a global vision of the world, history and the future of humanity. America is magnificent - they chose him to clear the dirt from its coat of arms that infamous Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and their acolytes soiled it with as they were unworthy of representing the nation of Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Franklin and Roosevelt. In any case, it is clear that a great nation with free citizens knows how to make good on its excesses. This is a great lesson for everyone. I took heart to one specific point in Obama's speech: the subtle line he drew between human rights and democracy. He rejected interference in the internal affairs of another country so as to impose a new government on it, as the United States did in 1953 when it brought down the government of Mossadegh, but he also affirmed his attachment to a government that represents the will of the people. I conclude from this that he meant a government brought forth from honest, free elections without electoral fraud and without the manipulation or intimidation of the voters. This is what the Maghreb is missing most: it is a region of electoral schemers, rape of the constitution and governing by terror. Obama has prohibited torture and ordered the closure of Guantanamo. But, does he include in his understanding his allies who are predators of freedoms and who harass their opponent with the systematic practice of torture?... of regimes where thugs disguised police officers strip the clothes off of a mother of five children and subject her to sexual abuse and torture for 24 hours without stopping?... regimes where the representatives of public order torture suspects, forcing their nightsticks into their anuses until their intestines explode and their excrement makes its way up to their lungs, suffocating the victim? I hope not.

"Many more are simply sceptical that real change can occur..." I am one of those who are sceptical because one can never believe US hypocritical promises.

Salam - To the best of my knowledge, according to his speech, Barack Obama is a man of peace and tolerance, a man of democracy and transparency, a man of fidelity and trust, a man who respects differences, a man with foresight, a man who detests negligence, a man of quality and skill, a man of literature and science, a man who works with great conscience, a man who favours the freedom of religion and believe. Barack Obama is the best president of the USA par excellence. - From Rabat, Morocco, Mustapha Lamiri

Salam alikum. The beginning of collapse of the American empire and flagrant failure of the American policy.

Salam alikum. It is high time that the Islamic world acts with the President of the United States of America Barack Hussein Obama from the depth of history to the political, economic geography, implement the Arab initiative and implement on the ground resolution 242 of the United Nations adopted in 1967. It is high time to launch serious historical negotiations which reflect the religious, human, intellectual, economic, oil, scientific, political and security importance of our region. It is high time to drive forward the wheel of human progress. God grants success. Amman, Jordan.

Words. Well chosen. Incredibly articulate, but still only words. If Obama is serious, he will make continued welfare to the terrorist sponsering apartheid theocracy of Israel contingent upon ending settlement activity, officially defining Israel's borders as those from 67', signing the NPT treaty, ending all apartheid practices in Israel, evicting all zionist squattors from Palestine and Publicly declaring Jerusalem open to Muslims/Christians and Jews. If Obama is serious, he will stop sending young Americans to Afghanistan, he will look for a peaceful way to build the pipeline that has long been the goal. He will launch a real investigation into 911. He will hold accountable people in the US govt. who allowed Mossad agents to murder 3000 Americans on 911. He will explain how thermite residue was found in the debris of the building rubble without the a controlled demolition. He will close Guantanimo bay. He will also order the closing of Prisons outside of the US, where people are tortured by US proxies in client states. He will then move onto debunking the MYTH that is Al QUIDA. He will explain that AL QUIDA was created by Mossad and traitors in the US govt. He will tell the American people and the world the truth. Once the truth is told, then America can go back to being the great nation it once was. Then nations all over the world will once again begin to use the dollar as their principal reserve currency. Until these changes occur, America will continue its downward decline. The American Economy is set to experience out of control inflation because of excessive govt. creation of debt and currency. The only way to get the world on board is by getting back to basics. Obama should be honest about what really happened. Words are very cheap.

He said, "Islam has a proud tradition of tolerance. We see it in the history of Andalusia and Córdoba during the Inquisition." However, the Catholic Inquisition began just when the Almohades and Almohavides stopped eliminating the Jews and Christians in Muslim Spain.

A good Muslim, the bearer of a civilisation of peace and tolerance, can only take the open hand of this young American president - handful of hands that could comprise the start of the process of a mutual de-demonisation and the rebuilding of trust. This trust depends, just like the animosity before it, on a fair solution to the Palestinian problem. The Muslim world is not bitter and it would suffice just to bring about goodwill for peace and justice so as to quell the passions. I also think that this is a unique opportunity for some countries in the Muslim world to join in the universal path of humanity. This humanity needs to surpass all else in order to get down to the major problems such as poverty, sickness, pollution and so on. Long live the United States of the World!

A peaceful face with poisonous tentacles. Curse America and its dear Israel.

The American president, Barack Obama, has extended an open hand to the Muslim world. This is a great reconciliation come from a great nation. Peace is more profitable than war, yet will the extremists from both sides be satisfied? Morocco is a land of peace and tolerance, and it is the first country in the world to have always asked for peace and co-existence between all the descendents of Abraham. So, Obama has all of our support to reign in peace and resolve the conflict between Israel and Palestine, creating two brother and neighbour states. -Signed, Acharif Moulay Abdellah Bouskraoui

In the name of God the Beneficient the Merciful. We thank the American lawyer “Obama” for his nice words about Islam and Muslims. other than thanking him as a person, I can only tell him as president of America: your animosity to Muslims and Islams continues: Iraq is occupied and so is Afghanistan. The American state is still the strategic ally of the historical enemy of Muslims. It is America which supplies it with money, information, experts and soldiers as well as the west in general or those who pretend to be the protectors of Christianity on earth. The strategy of the west in general was based on the fear of Islam and Muslims. So why don't you face the problem from its source and define, as an institute, what causes your fears. But if your fear is over the Jews, let them enjoy life amongst you in their native countries. But if fear is over what you call Israel, the fate of this entity is disappearance sooner or later. It is an odd huge western tourism complex which has a costly guard for you and for the west. If this entity was instituted to weaken Arabs and Muslims, Muslims are getting more powerful. It has become a catalyst for them. If this entity was created to avoid the evil of Muslims and remove harm from the land of Christians, what happened in 2001 showed the inaccuracy of this strategy. So the west has to really change its strategy not just in words because Muslims are not as naive as their rulers seem to be.

I wouldn't be surprised if the above reaction were a provocation from the secret service of a Maghreb country. I think especially of one despotic country which uses the fundamentalist danger as an alibi for justifying its tyranny and abuses of human rights. An important trick in its diplomacy with the West is agitating the ghost of muslim fundamentalism and claiming itself as the shield protecting the West from it. People from the Maghreb, especially from that country, know too well that all their internet is watched. They will think twice before threatening by mail the US with a new 9-11.

"An Open Letter to the President of America, Barack Obama" - Mr President, it is with great respect that I offer you my modest message. I have the honour and great joy of sharing my concerns with you, like all the world's citizens who are feeling the way the political and economic crisis is playing other in several of the world's states of the world. The world and history will bear witness to your continuous efforts to put an end to this political and economic crisis in several of the world's states. This has forced the great governments to think about a new world order to put an end to the economic regime directed by governments that do not care at all for human beings and, by one manner or another, have done nothing but recreate slavery. Mr President, the world cannot wait with its arms crossed before a world regime that lead to no more than slavery, poverty, crime and so on. This leads to terrorism and arms trafficking and a world that is terrorised and unstable. Mr President, the world expects a new world order from you, wherein the great governments stop imposing their politics on other countries without respect for their patrimony or the individual characteristics of each country. This has destabilised many countries in the Third World and has given authority to fundamentalist movements and terrorism, as well as caused more poverty. Mr President, we hope that the new world order will resolve conflicts and increase dialogue between cultures and civilisations, increase love between religions and the descendents of Abraham. From there, there will be a resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and, more importantly, the conflict over the Moroccan Sahara. Adopting our project for autonomy in the southern provinces will facilitate...
