The Moroccan national football team lost 3-2 Thursday against Guinea, shocking fans and making it harder for the team to qualify for the second round of the African Cup of Nations.

[Getty Images] Moroccan national coach Henri Michel said his team has to shift its focus to the upcoming match against Ghana.

Following a smashing victory over Namibia earlier in the week, Morocco's national football team suffered a 3-2 defeat Thursday (January 24th) at the hands of Guinea, in the Maghreb team's second match of the 2008 African Cup of Nations.

Although the Moroccans controlled the pitch through much of the match, the young team passed up many scoring opportunities. Most disappointing were two shots by striker Youssef Hadji in the 23rd and 47th minutes, which the Guinean goalkeeper only narrowly deflected.

Guinea's first goal came quickly and against the natural course of the game. It was scored in the 11th minute on a curling free-kick intelligently played by captain Pascal Feindouno directly at the goal. Moroccan goalkeeper Khaled Fouhami was not positioned well and failed to clear the ball.

Bangoura tapped in a second goal for Guinea in the 59th minute, capitalising on a vacuum in the Moroccan defensive line, who were trying to support their midfield players by moving forward to feed them the ball. Meanwhile, as soon as substitute Hicham Aboucherouane came in to replace Houssein Kherja, he scored one of the tournament's best goals – a screamer flying into the far corner in the 60th minute.

Nevertheless, Feindouno scored the third goal three minutes later from the penalty spot, which was challenged by Moroccan players. Things turned around for Morocco when Feindouno was red-carded for kicking Amine Rbati in an off-the-ball incident in front of the referee. The Atlas Lions tried to exploit the shortage, managing to score their second goal in the 90th minute on a header by defender Abdesslam Wadou. The goal came too late to turn things around.

After the match, Moroccan coach Henri Michel said, "Our players faced major difficulties in the midfield. The first goal took us by surprise, and made our game more difficult. We weren't able to take hold of the game. Our attackers relied on long passes, and I think that was wrong. Now we have to think about the decisive match against Ghana."

Moroccan midfielder Badr El Kaddouri said, "This defeat has affected us. All the odds were against us, and everyone saw how the referee was against us. He favoured the Guinean team against us; something that made the match more difficult for us."

Striker Moncef Zerka agreed, saying that "the match lacked a fair referee.' He added, "This defeat is very disappointing because we were looking at the match as our opportunity to qualify for the second round. But now, this will have to be postponed. We hope to win in our match against Ghana."

For team captain Youssef Safri, the match didn't show Morocco's full potential. "We shouldn't have been defeated," he said. "Now we have to prepare for the match against the hosts, which will be very difficult. I hope we'll be well prepared, because we have no other option but to win in that match to qualify to the second round."

With the disappointing defeat, the Moroccan team now has three points from one win. Ghana, fresh off a win over Namibia, has six points on two victories. Guinea is tied with Morocco with three points, and Namibia trails with zero.

Ahhh! So long as God wills it, Morocco is going to make the qualifications and is definitely going to win in Ghana, especially given the return of Alloudi, the best player in 2008’s African Cup.

دكو Posted 2008-01-25

Mistakes should be avoided with Ghana. Players should concentrate and forget Guinea. Play football and act.

ahmed Posted 2008-01-25

Honestly the coach has all responsibily in the elimination of the Moroccan national team for introducing some players who don't deserve to defend the national flag.

The match between Morocco and Guinea was a miracle.

achraf Posted 2008-01-25

I think Morocco was already eliminated: Ghana, which is holding the African Cup, is not going to be eliminated right off the bat. That is a simple fact. –Achraf, age 14

chaimah Posted 2008-01-25

i think that guine is a fake and i love maroc and i think that it should win the african cup

yahya boutchkil Posted 2008-01-25

Honestly, the match of Morocco against Guinea was below expectations as a result of the mistakes of the coach and the futility of the players who are called substitutes.

The referee had nothing to do with this; we lost because we stank.

Hello, So that we can hope for some good results with Ghana, Henri Michel needs to come back to the game until it comes time for France. He would be on solid ground with Safri, Hadji, Kabour El Karkouiri and Kaissi on offence, Skitioui, Chamakh and Alloudi as midfielders and Kaddouri, Ouaddou and Chrétian on defence. Henri Michel should also be strict with the players, inciting them to play with speed, short-passes and take advantage of Ghana’s weak points, i.e. running the side lines when the centres are on the retreat. Bye all and long live Morocco!

Guinea’s defeat of Morocco’s team is essentially thanks to coach Henri Michel, who lacks a sense of strategy. The best players—for example Kaboul—were left on the sidelines. It is the same mistakes repeating themselves. The coaching staff is completely behind the elimination of the Atlas Lions.

By God Morocco take the Cup of CAN 2008!

jalal Posted 2008-01-26

The Moroccan national team’s problem is its coach. He did not manage the match against Guinea well. For example, why did he like Chamke on the sidelines: he doesn’t even need a ball to play. Also, what about Fouhami? Did he forget the error made in the African Cup in Tunisia? Now, it is time to think about the next match.

مصطفى لغفور Posted 2008-01-26

Why did Morocco lose so easily? My God help us.

toujours marocains Posted 2008-01-26

Good luck to the Atlas Lions in their match against Ghana.

abdo Posted 2008-01-27

hi im abdo from moroco ilove mey love

abdo Posted 2008-01-27

By God, shame on you coach. You see players lost on the pitch and you’re just gazing and sitting dear showing no interest to them. Anyway, if only Badou Zaki had remained. Oh Lord, let’s win that match so that we’re not eliminated.

عبد القادر Posted 2008-01-28

In reality, the Moroccan national team will beat Ghana 2-0 by relying on the official line-up. Long live Morocco.

هاجرالعماريين Posted 2008-01-28

My comment about the match of Guinea. The Moroccan national team made all efforts, the biggest mistake is that of the coach, he shouldn't have included the goalie Fouhami. We wish success to the Moroccan national team. Morocco forever forever forever

كوثر Posted 2008-01-28

The coach should introduce very strong players. We wish success to the lions of Atlas inchallah.

Simo Posted 2008-01-28

The Moroccan Team is out of date. No way to beat the black stars. it's over for us !!!. May be next competition.

fifi Posted 2008-01-28

And, we're headed back home. Thanks Michel, you saved us the cost of a hotel!!!

solayman Posted 2008-01-28

Henry Michel isn't a football coach but he's a coach in chewing gum. We want Badou Zaki as soon as possible.

mouzayine zohair Posted 2008-01-28

For the national team, it was up to the level. But the enemies of God the referees didn’t supervise fairly between the two teams which caused disappointment and failure to the lions of Atlas. I wish victory to the national team and good luck. And finally I say long love Morocco…

boumedienne59 Posted 2008-01-29

The drafter cannot do anything if the players are not already wearing jerseys. I think we need to go find a new team for the World Cup today: Morocco was so weak against Guinea and Ghana!!! And, there are certain players who should no longer be on the team, namely Fouami. The forward left always give a free goal at each game: Guinea, Ghana and Namibia had the mid-ground on every offensive manoeuvre. And, Chamak is not a real scorer; the proof is in the game with Bordeaux!!! TRUST IN THE YOUNG PEOPLE WHO WOULD BE PROUD TO WEAR THE COLOURS AND CARRY ON THE VALUES OF MOROCCO!!!

sanaa Posted 2008-02-01

I am seriously disgusted by my country!!! What was with this match against Ghana!!!??? Ridiculous!!! Morocco’s team was so transparent that Ghana could play without coaching!!! What I am saying should be frightening! What pisses me off even more is that I know Morocco had the chance to qualify! Morocco has a great team, and we must all surely know who did not put the players in… who left them on the sidelines!!! Henry Michel did not even put Alloudi in!!! This was a serious waste! Everyone says do not lose hope, and every time it is the same: Morocco gets eliminated! We need to get Zaki back! He is a true Moroccan, a true *native*! He knows how to take action and I think he understands our team a lot better: he knows how to make up for our weak points!!! Long live Morocco! Long live the Maghreb!

achraf Posted 2008-02-08

I would like to say that the players played well and that the blame goes to the referee and the coach. And, I would like to say to Talale Al Karkoui that all of Morocco is unhappy with you. I wish you success in 2010!

kacem Posted 2008-03-30

Well played, Moroccans. I want Badou Zaki.

sarah Posted 2009-06-16

Let's be optimistic and encourage the Moroccan national team even if we gave a lot but our wishes weren't realized neither in 2006 nor in 2008. Despite our disappointment in it, it still needs us.
