Al-Zawahiri claims Libyan group joined al-Qaeda

2007-11-05

In a recent audio recording, Ayman al-Zawahiri claimed that a Libyan group has joined al-Qaeda. He also called on Maghreb citizens to topple their regimes. Analysts in the region viewed the tape an attempt to shore up dwindling support following losses in Algeria.

[Getty Images] Al-Zawahiri called on armed groups to topple the Maghreb's regimes.

Al-Qaeda's latest audiotape, announcing the new membership of a Libyan group and calling for the toppling of regimes in the Maghreb, is an attempt to boost the organisation's morale following severe setbacks in Algeria, analysts said.

In an audio recording posted on the internet on Saturday (November 3rd), al-Qaeda's second in command Ayman al-Zawahiri said "honourable members" of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group have joined al-Qaeda's "jihad" against "America, France, Spain and their people". The tape called on Maghreb citizens to support what he called the "mujahideen" in toppling the leaders of Libya, Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco and hitting Western interests.

Al-Zawahiri blasted Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi's 2003 promise to give up weapons of mass destruction – a move that ended years of international isolation.

The tape also featured the voice of a speaker that al-Zawahiri introduced as Abu al-Laith al-Libi, a Libyan member of al-Qaeda believed to be hiding in Afghanistan. "We announce we are joining al-Qaeda as loyal soldiers," al-Libi said, urging Libyans to prepare for a "new round of the battles of Islam".

The Libyan Islamic Fighting Group first announced itself in 1995, vowing to topple the Libyan regime. It is the second organisation to allegedly join al-Qaeda after Algeria's Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC), which changed its name to al-Qaeda Organization in the Islamic Maghreb last January.

Tunisian political analyst Borhane Besais described al-Zawahiri's message as a morale-boosting effort aimed at al-Qaeda members after what he said were severe blows recently dealt to the organisation in Algeria.

"Al-Zawahiri's message came at a time when cracks started to appear in the structure of armed Islamic groups in Algeria as a result of the armed struggle option which has infuriated Algerians because it was targeting innocent civilians," Besais said, noting the recent ousting of Algeria's al-Qaeda leader Abdelmalek Droukdel by members of the former GSPC.

Besais said the announcement that the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group has joined al-Qaeda is a "manoeuvre to confuse positions at a time when the Libyan authorities are making contacts with most armed jihadi organizations in Libya." Many of the group's leaders are in Libyan jails, with some members in Afghanistan fighting alongside al-Zawahiri.

Abdallah Errami, a Moroccan expert on Islamist groups' affairs, expressed doubts that Libyans will heed al-Zawahiri's calls. In an interview with Aljazeera on Saturday, Errami said Libyan security agencies initiated dialogue some time ago with the jailed leaders of the Islamic Fighting Group. "I think that al-Zawahiri wanted to preclude any possible reconciliation that could take place in the future," he said.

Commenting on the tape, Moroccan Interior Minister Chakib Benmoussa said Morocco was taking al-Zawahiri's threat seriously. "We never neglect any risk ... We are integrating it in the reflections which we are having today on how to face up to external risks," he said following a meeting with his French counterpart Michele Alliot-Marie on Sunday.

That evil frustrated individual is a pig and should be dealt with. Shame on him. I am hoping for the day he gets taken out by his peers or by some Algerian security operatives.

عصام Posted 2007-11-07

Al Qaeda organization in Afghanistan doesn't control the Arab Maghreb region or even Libya. Because this organization was inflated by America and media and made of it an empire. That's why I don't think that such an organization presents a threat to the security of America, except for the attacks of 11 December. And since then, it was unable to carry out any operations in America; as to its operations in the Arab Maghreb, they're weak on the methodical level, they're not professional operations but security forces don't have the necessary technologies and training to fight Al Qaeda.

I personally think that we have gone astray from our right track. Where we are in what is happening, and where is our religion? We were raised with concepts of mercy, altruism, and avoiding tumults. We’ve always lived while seeking peace and conciliation, we strictly abide by Qur'anic verses calling for entering into peace. Now, I can agree to jihad against anyone who attacks and oppresses us, plunders our lands, or violates our honour; then I can accept the matter. But I have one question: is Jihad in a country with a majority of Muslims not a tumult? I am just asking for an honest answer. We hope that calling for our religion will be in a kind way, and that we call to our religion with the best expressions of mercy and elevation, namely with our peaceful brothers.

In the name of God, God Almighty said 'Peace is better', and said 'And if they incline to peace, incline you also to it'. This is the best evidence that Islam doesn't call to violence and killing between brothers, it has also forbidden killing a human being even if he's an unbeliever, so how about killing a Muslim? Confronting this terrorism and fatwas that are unrelated to religion and life, I say to these people why don't you go to Jerusalem to liberate it from Zionists? Or Iraq from Americans or Chechnya. It's your weakness that pushes you to kill the innocents. Al-Qaeda which is showing off in front of the innocents should find another territory outside the land of martyrs Algeria and to lead fair wars against a visible enemy and not a defenceless innocent whose only crime is to love living on a land irrigated by the pure bloods of his forefathers. And today it's irrigated with the blood of innocents. Salam.

ميلودوف Posted 2007-11-26

The Great Maghreb is far away from all these aberrant statements. It’s been an Islamic country since the first century. How can Al Zawahiri and his followers be allowed to stir chaos among its citizens? If they want Jihad, they should go with their guns to the occupied territories in Palestine violated by Zionists or go to Iraq occupied by America and liberate these occupied lands. They should stop showing off to their Muslim brothers. The Muslim doesn’t kill, oppress, offend or humiliate his Muslim brother. The Great Maghreb should remain greater above any attacker.

Thanks to Magharebia site which is publishing such news with credibility and offering an opportunity to the visitors to express their opinions which don’t reflect the opinion of the site which don’t agree with the opinions in the comments…I just want to remind our Muslim brothers that Jihad in Islam is an individual obligation. The prophet of Islam Mohamed said ‘I was ordered to fight people until they say “we believe that there is no God but Allah and that Mohamed is the prophet of Allah”. Jihad is not just a defence of the nation or soul, if attacked. Jihad is every time and everywhere until Islam is widely-spread in all parts of the world. So Al Zawahiri, Ben Laden or those who bear their ideas, if God guides them to it, it’s the path of the right and life. They’re just abiding by the orders of their messenger Mohamed according to the verse of the Koran saying ‘Follow what the prophet says to you, and stay away from what he banned you”. So don’t try my Muslim brothers to hide the sun with a thread, the truth is clear like the moon in a clear night…This is not what I wanted to say, because getting entangled in hot comments without any value is of no interest to us, we’re more interested in finding a solution to the problem of Muslims and what they’re experiencing as a result of what their religion is bearing including violence, destruction, corruption which is contrary to the Heavenly thought which is mercy…So please my Muslim brothers reconsider your religious composition and look for a solution which still exists and is very clear. It’s Jesus the God of Mercy and peace…The God loves you and still waits till you come to him to release everyone of you…I pray God to enlighten your path to the right and guidance. Amen. Your brother, who was a Muslim extremist now converted to Christianity, Hassan from Morocco.

Go away and let's live in peace, we don't want any more blood and barbarism. For us, you're our enemies. "Killers and slaughterers and they say that they're Mujahids". Which Jihad are you talking about? You kill Muslims and innocents, go to Palestine and fight as you say. May God put your plots in your necks. You've made the children orphans, women widows and you talk about Jihad. You're traitors. Algeria won't surrender to you. Algeria is strong by its people and president, may God protect him. I’m not going to accuse you of apostasy as you do against some Muslims. But I will tell you ideologists of Al Qaeda “organization”, the Muslim is the person who spares people from the evil of his tongue and hand. The fact is that money is an evil, the billions of dollars you pump in the banks of the people you describe as enemies of Islam, to supply you with weapons to kill innocents, sons of your nation. Isn’t it better to spend that money on education and health care for the sons of the poor in this nation? I will say it in the Moroccan dialect “The one who has some saffron left uses it in cooking snails”. Finally, I hope that you will take what I say seriously, you’ve chosen to be enemies, so be careful about the anger of the sons of Tarik Ibn ziyad. So stop playing on the tone of shaking regimes, Moroccans aren’t minors that need your help. If you were true Mujahids, you should do Jihad in yourselves, fear God in the money of Muslims and stop giving them to Zionists to supply you with weapons. Isn’t it strange that you can attack Manhattan, Madrid, London, Casablanca and Algiers, and you can’t even threaten your ally and the guarantor of your “ephemeral” grace and even to throw ashes in our eyes. You see how you have diminished in our eyes. Finally I ask the Almighty to guide you for the good, He is alone capable of answering, this is a warning. Salam.

يوسف Posted 2007-12-14

If you want to know or find a new life, you have to search. You have to let aside prejudgments. But if you want to start repairing the road, you should stop and contemplate for a while. Look where the road started from. Maybe you can know that the end of what you are making of your priority has no happy beginning or end. Because those who take by swords will be taken by swords! To begin a new and happy life full of love of the welfare of all the people isn't an impossible decision, but before making up your mind, let me ask you one question: have you ever learnt tolerance and leniency? Can you forsake hatred and anger to start learning to love all people, even your enemies? It might be difficult for you to accept all this, but those who can't forgive people, love them and work for their good....can't follow the Christ, read or believe his instructions!

محمد Posted 2007-12-14

From my observation of terrorist acts that happened and are still happening in Algeria, it seems that the Maghreb states have been reduced to Algeria. Why have most of the savage terrorist attacks been in Algeria while other states in the Arab Maghreb haven’t even smelled the attacks. If the rulers are good, they're all good, and if they’re corrupt, they are all the same. So why this exception? I don’t think that the purpose of these operations is to establish Islam. Algeria has been a Muslim State for centuries, and doesn’t expect to pig of terrorism to teach the instructions of its tolerant religion. Instead, their purpose is to shake Algeria's stability after noticing an improvement in all sectors in the country. Finally, al-Qaeda in the Maghreb cannot weaken Algeria or Algerians, they’re stronger than the attacks of the followers of America and the Jews.

I’m Chouaib from Algeria. I think that what’s happening in Algeria is a settlement of accounts between the Algerian people and the Algerian government is the cause of everything happening in the country. The last operation is meant to silence the people under current price hikes, so that people don’t go out to demonstrate and destroy their properties to protect their interests. They’re the cause of everything. There is no terrorism in Algeria, the State is terrorism.

God says: "Permission (to fight) is given to those upon whom war is made because they are oppressed, and most surely Allah is well able to assist them." To those who dare against the mujahideen who go out fight for God; to those who are interested in this world and forget the afterlife; to those who look for nothing but shortcomings and to lashing out at men as if we are living in a true Islamic state that is governed according to God's sharia: spare the mujahedeen and remember the women in Chechnya, old men in Iraq and Children in Afghanistan. Those who died without ever thinking about jihad are like those who died in the era before Islam. Don't consider this as some sort of exaggeration or extremism. Rather, this is sunna of Prophet Mohamed. To those who want to make sure, I say, 'go back to God's Holy Koran and the sunna of His Prophet.'

dahaya.net Posted 2007-12-20

The accusation that Morocco has usurped the Western Sahara is the saying of someone who is ignorant of history; someone who just believes whatever the leaders of Algeria say. No wonder that this should be said from people who had their hands stained by Algerians' blood when they were officers in the French Army; those who committed crimes against the Moroccans who liberated Algeria and died for it before Bouteflika and his gang committed the most horrible crime in both ancient and contemporary history.

First thank you for opening this forum for discussion. In regard to this Al-Zawahiri and his chaotic and destructive messages amongst the Muslims particularly in the Maghreb, I just want to say to him that you have chosen the wrong path. If you go back to the Qur'an, you will find that it shuns chaos and curses those who support it. In the "Victory" chapter of the Qur'an, if you have really understood its meaning, you will certainly see your misguidance. God has told his servants "When, comes the Help of Allah, and Victory, (1) And thou dost see the People enter Allah's Religion in crowds, (2) Celebrate the Praises of thy Lord, and pray for His Forgiveness: for He is Oft-Returning (in Grace and Mercy). God is all truthful. We then understand that true repentance comes from Allah and not from Zawahiri or his gang. This is why this guy mesmerises no one but himself because he has no clear plan for change. I take this opportunity to advise this confused guy to seriously think in what can bring peace and security to the Muslims and unite their ranks by spreading values of solidarity, mutual help rather than dispersing their voices and planting seeds of chaos and division among them while other nations are regrouping and rallying.

SALIM Posted 2007-12-24

You are worthless

badre Posted 2007-12-24

We need to think about how to improve ourselves and how to accept give-and-take.

Is this site what helps you create a fissure between brothers? Colonialists have already left enough destruction, you Arabs.

ادريس Posted 2007-12-25

It is those who pretend to be Muslims that have brought us in this maze. They killed Saddam, whom I consider to be the first Arab ever to say No to the West. He preferred dying in his country instead of running away abroad. All I can say to Ayman Al Zawahiri and Oussama Ben Laden, you’re not defending from your caves neither Islam nor Muslims, but just bats of the caves and the enemies of the Arabic and Islamic countries. I ask God to open the eyes of the Muslims in order to reach the goal to which you want to take the Arab and Islamic world; to open the eyes of the Muslims to get out of the darkness of ignorance and shame to the light of knowledge and science. We’ve had enough of Muslims who terrorize us for those who don’t make a prayer in its due time. Salam alaikoum.

touati Posted 2007-12-25

Salam alaikoum. I think that your king, the name of the prophet is sacred, is a person who should fear God in his nation and be modes. He should live like the people of the nation are living. He should not be haughty. He should also give back the Sahara and leave this people in peace if he really wants our prophet to love him. May God guide you oh man.

abou aymane Posted 2007-12-25

How to perform prayers....to every Muslim...very easy...If you're god, all the deeds will be good.

rachid Posted 2007-12-25

I want to say that this is not reasonable. Leave our country in peace, leave our sons in tranquillity. Morocco is the country of the forefathers and the saints. May God assist the king of Morocco Mohamed 6. Thanks to everyone.

عبد الله Posted 2007-12-26

Abdelilah from Morocco. There is no God but God and Mohammed is messenger there's no other God but God there's no power and no will but from God Almighty.

anouar Posted 2007-12-26

The tumult is rising and the problems are on the rise. Everyone is trying to justify his decision, and the people alone pay the price.

محمد Posted 2007-12-28

In the name of God, peace and prayer on the messenger of God, the group of Jews are behind the fabrication of these fanciful stories which become a fact in reality. They're known for their cunning and smartness in sowing tumult. I think that the Jews seized the opportunity of Islamic sectarian extremism of some people present in the entire Islamic world and invented for us a real series with different scenarios; so that everyone analyses according to his fancies. And at the end, the result will be in favour of the Jews and inducing the whole world into error...

Most your opinions talk about the religion of Islam. The Prophet said, God says, these are leading the holy war, one says long live the war, another one talks about Tamazight and Bouteflika. May God guide you all. Do you still believe in the ogre and think that these people really commit these terrific acts of killing all people out of love for religion? Never, don't be misled, wake up, you should understand that everyone pretends to outreach Laila and Laila denies this.

أبو حوراء Posted 2007-12-29

Salam on those who followed the right path. To the apostasy from Islam as he said, Hassan from Morocco. In the name of God, prayer on the most compassionate creatures of God Mohamed and his brother Jesus, God’s best prayers and peace on them…Oh son of my country, my advice to you is that you make a halt with yourself to look for reality. I think that when you entered Islam, you didn’t understand it and didn’t learn if from the Book of God and the tradition of the prophet from trustworthy and accurate sources. Or what do you think my brother of all the scientists, priests and researchers who convert to Islam…Haven’t they read that saying by the prophet…Even the just people from other religions have their sayings about the prophet of Arabs which we’re pride of…Because he is a mercy, yes a mercy on animals, things before man…Go back to his life and contemplate…The Koran, the tradition of the prophet, history and even in the Bible…Yes this is saying is correct. But do you know that the messenger of God, peace and prayer upon him, entered the cities of Mecca and Medina without war…Do you know that the Jews used to live near Al Madina…Did you know his transactions with his Jewish neighbour…And his recommendations of the neighbour whatever his origins…Do you know that he said anyone who kills a man of the Books won’t….Do you know that the holy war (Jihad) is against those who fight Islam and prevents reaching their people… And that in war, he ordered not to kill a woman, an elderly man or child…What God say in His book should bear enough evidence ‘There’s no compulsion in religion’ and ‘You have your religion and I have my religion’. Another advice to you and to the groups in general, learn Islam in the hands of Islamic scholars famous for saying the truth and who aren’t radical…Anyway, I’m not qualified to write topics namely about religion; but my jealousy for the religion of God, and in defence to his prophet and my wish for you to enter paradise… This is all I want to say and I ask God forgiveness. If anyone finds an error, please advise, may God reward you. The son of your country who wishes for you and to all humanity to enter paradise, to meet the messengers of God and His creatures Jesus, Mohamed, Moses, peace and prayer on them.

hakoum Posted 2007-12-30

Al-Qaeda being responsible is a baseless claim. This is just the work of the mafia in this country who are restless. Just an opinion! They are determined to impose their idea. God is our savior and to Him we shall return for relief for justice. Amen. All Praise be to the Lord of the Worlds.

mohamed Posted 2007-12-30

I am Algerian and love my country. There is no power in the world that can divide us. Long live Algeria forever. Thanks

jihane Posted 2007-12-30

Greetings of peace to you. Your master died as a martyr before your own eyes, he is Saddam Hussein may the mercy of God be upon him. Dont blame your bloody work on Maghrebis.

samir Posted 2008-01-06

Salam alaikoum. Happy new year.

عبد الرحمان Posted 2008-01-07

Where are men there are only jackals in this country, forgive me brothers, a greeting to nice men.

احمد Posted 2008-01-18

In the name of God...we condemn these attacks.

salim.dz Posted 2008-02-02

You're crazy. We Algerians don't fear blood...We and our grandfathers are used to it. So don't interfere in what doesn't concern you. Please.

yo Posted 2008-02-11

If Algeria is not Arab then I am the descendent of The Jewsih Kahina, ur not arab okay but dont speak for a whole nation thanx! My forfathers ddnt come to ur bloody country that i love by the way to be called non arabs!

الحراق مصطفى Posted 2008-02-28

In the name of God. Don’t you see that your prophet is mocked in front of the world and you are killing each other? Repent to God and judge by the book of God and his tradition and support the tradition of your prophet. Oh Lord be witness that I have advised…Salam.

hassan Posted 2008-03-03

They say that everything is good and we are the world’s best. So, is this true or not!?

hafid Posted 2008-03-05

Yes, hi. You who say that Ayman al-Zawahiri has reached the Arab Maghreb: is this a nightmare or are you mad? Do you think that Bush and behind him Arab presidents are easy? Bush knows what he is doing. Relax, Bush is in charge of them. Where is Zawahiri and where is Ben Laden? Everyone has gone and even Gaza has gone with them.

Anonymous Posted 2008-03-09

Algeria will resist as we know it against this rubbish, whatever its origin.

anwar Posted 2008-03-13

You should respect the orders of God, if you are unaware. He grants you everything you need to live. You fear poverty, but God, who grant us subsistence, grants subsistence to the birds and the fish in the sea. For those who believe that subsistence is granted from power, the bird wouldn’t eat anything with the eagle eagle around. Life goes, you don’t know when night comes whether you will live until dawn. How many young men after sleeping, awoke in the morning to the unknown, and don't know why? Your brother Anwar from Tiznit.

anwar Posted 2008-03-13

Salam, I thank you so much.

ahmad Posted 2008-03-20

Salam Arab brothers, I wish you success in your duty because it is not an easy one. We are with you, from you and to you. The victory and triumph of God, Amen.

Ayman al-Zawahiri, you are just a criminal and accuser of apostasy. You are at the service of CIA and Mossad, a cursed terrorist. But why do you kill our brothers in Algeria who are not associated with the government or any side? Moreover, Islam states characteristics which should feature Muslims.
