Morocco has pinned its hopes on ICT to boost its national economy and sent a large delegation to international information technology exhibition GITEX, held September 8th-12th in Dubai (United Arab Emirates).
"Our attendance, with the e-Morocco strategy as our theme, is part of an attempt to promote Morocco as a high-potential region in the ICT industry", said Bachir Rachdi, chairman of the APEBI (Association of Information Technology Professionals), who headed the Moroccan delegation.
A number of companies took part in the event including Cadtech, specialising in geographical information systems (GIS); Mughamart, which provides Arabic-language software solutions; Involys, which publishes asset and property management software solutions; CBI, and IB Maroc. CDG Capital subsidiary Medz made a special effort at the event to raise awareness of the progress made in setting up technology hubs dedicated to off-shoring and innovating industries (CasaNearshore and the Rabat Technopolis).
Another novel aspect of Morocco's fifth visit to GITEX was the strong presence of the government, which was represented by officials from the ANRT (a regulatory body) and the Ministry of Finance.
In a bid to prolong the GITEX effect, the APEBI is planning to hold an international conference in Dubai on December 4th, intended to showcase the e-Morocco strategy and to impress investors from the United Arab Emirates and Asia in the ICT sector with the country's prowess in infrastructure and qualified human resources. Over 100 of the most influential manufacturers, decision-makers and partners in the region will attend.
This year’s GITEX was bigger and better than ever. "At GITEX 2008 Morocco will have a stand measuring 200 square metres, once again featuring private operators and officials representing the Moroccan government," said Hakima Ibraymi of the Moroccan Export Promotion Centre.
GITEX 2007, which was attended by over 130,000 people, covered an area of 64,000 square metres and hosted 3,300 exhibiting companies from a total of 82 countries.

I think you need to be ashamed, you need to stop and you need to keep quiet. How, with only 2 or 3 groups taking part, can you say that Morocco’s participation was honourable? Moreover, there is no address and no contact information for CasaNearShore. They are completely vague and, furthermore, way behind. And, who is running the offices like AtosOrigin and Capgem? There is something to worry about. In short, you need to stop making yourselves out to be real businessmen.
