Results in Algeria's 2007 baccalaureate exams show the highest passing rate (53.27%) since the country’s independence 45 years ago.

The wait is over for Algeria's 699,695 baccalaureate (Bac) candidates, whose test results were made available as early as Thursday night (July 5th). The overall results are Algeria's best ever since independence, with a passing rate of 53.27%
Many candidates consulted lists posted in local high schools to learn their results, but students could also access scores on the National Office of Tests and Examinations (ONEC) website. ONEC also allowed mobile telephone operator Mobilis, a subsidiary of Algeria Telecom, to exclusively broadcast the results on its network.
The announcement of the results added to the already festive ambiance in many homes on July 5th, the day of Algeria's independence. While stores were closed and automobile traffic was much lighter than usual, in high school neighbourhoods there was a bustle of activity.
At Omar Racim High School in the centre of Algiers, Amel Djadi was among the pleased students. "I got it," she exclaimed, running into her mother’s arms. A sciences candidate, Djadi obtained an average of 10.80, which opens the doors to university and graduate studies. "My joy would be more complete if my friend had the same luck I had. I hope that she will catch up with me next year when she retakes it," she said.
The results show that 280,000 candidates were successful, of which 40.62% were formally schooled students. Ahmed Zoubiri, a French instructor, pointed out that the 2007 Bac also holds another record: the greatest number of successful independent candidates- 75,000 of 263,075.
One test examiner told Magharebia the redemption system, for those students very close to the 10-point average, was eliminated, resulting in tens of thousands of candidates getting eliminated. The Ministry of National Education stopped the minimum passing average at 10/20. According to Mohamed Badji, an official at the Academy of Algiers, the passing rate would have reached 65% had the redemption system been applied as in the past.
According to Badji, this year's elevated passing rate is due to student improvement, itself in keeping with reforms undertaken in the sector. Mathematics instructor Malika Nessah explained that the reason for the number of successful candidates is also due to the obligatory review courses instituted for the exam classes. These are "courses that take place outside normal school hours and that serve to reinforce the assimilation capacity of the students", she added.
The distribution of passing rates by region revealed that the wilaya of Relizane, in the west of the country, came in first with a rate of 68.72%, while the southern wilayas of Tindouf and Illizi rank at the bottom. It is also noteworthy that 405,924 of the 699,695 (58.01%) candidates were girls.

I got the baccalaureate certificate in 2007 at the average grade point 12.30. I study at university, but studies aren’t to the level. There’s a shortage in the number of teachers and favouritism even in education. What do you think about this, isn’t it an injustice or humiliation?

Finally, the baccalaureate exams are done! I hope I pass it this year. The truth is that they—the professors—were very strict with us. They were like policemen. Every 30 minutes, the director, she came to search us. Wow! A baccalaureate that was 100% innocent, no cheating or sneaking around! But, I still need my baccalaureate exam to be graded in all subjects, especially mathematics and technical subjects.

Hi, I am one of the 2008 baccalaureate candidates. I did all that I could, but I do not feel at ease. Even though I am a good student, I feel like I didn’t do anything right. I didn’t pass the 1997 baccalaureate but I passed the 1998 one. The baccalaureate exam is mainly based on efficiency, that is to say, if you look at the exam paper you imagine the solution after a while and can even grade yourself with high precision. This is efficiency. You can attain it by mastering as many methods and tricks to solve problems as is possible. Finding a trick or method to solve problems during the days of the baccalaureate exams is a risk which may work but time won’t help. The baccalaureate certificate is a gateway to the future. The future might receive you as a guest or even a member of its house and or it may expel you from its home because the decisive period of life's struggle is university. I will give you an example. I might be in the coming years, God wiling, a scientific researcher in physics and chemistry. I may contribute with research to develop my country and drive us up. You should always remember this when you go to university ‘what can I do for my country, my religion and my nation?’ because you will be accountable before God for your deeds. With wishes of success to everyone.

Hi, I took the baccalaureate exam last year and I averaged a 10.33, but it was not high enough. I re-took the baccalaureate exam this year and it was very easy for those who just needed to pass the exam. But, unfortunately, I also have university exams to take and I do not have any time. But, all of this was because I worked hard for the baccalaureate exam this year. God willing, everybody who took the baccalaureate exam this year will pass.
