Low pass rate for baccalaureate exams in Morocco

2007-06-22

The pass rate for this year’s first round of baccalaureate exams was 39.1%. Some 87,000 students, more than half of them girls, were successful. Science and technology subjects saw the highest success rates.

By Sarah Touahri for Magharebia in Rabat – 22/06/07

[Sarah Touahri] 118,767 candidates will take part in the additional round of exams to be held July 5th.

Emotions ran high in Moroccan schools when the results of this year's first round of baccalaureate exams were announced on Wednesday (June 20th). The overall pass rate was 39.1%, up by 1.1% from last year.

This year’s baccalaureate exams saw some new initiatives to improve standards and raise the credibility of the qualification.

For some there was relief, while others were unhappy with their poor results. "I’m very happy, but at the same time I’m sorry for the people who didn’t pass. Anyway, they’ve still got another chance in two weeks’ time," student Sarah Bakkali said.

A total of 86,994 candidates passed. More than half of them are girls. "Boys and girls did more or less equally well," a Ministry of Education statement said. "Girls have done better than ever."

Science and technology subjects saw the highest pass rate of 46.7%, up by 5% on the same round of exams last year. Arts subjects continued to see the lowest pass rates, with only 30.3% of candidates making the grade.

This is not the end of the road for students who failed. Another round of exams on July 5th will give 118,767 students another chance. Ministry officials are expecting the overall percentage of successful students to rise considerably after the additional round since the number of candidates sitting the second session corresponds to half of those who sat the first.

The 25,460 independent candidates scored lower than average, with a pass rate of 15.2%.

The final results of the exams will be published on July 15th, immediately after examiners conclude their deliberations.

Many candidates who passed thought that some exams were too difficult or too lengthy for the time given to complete them. Although she managed to pass her exams, Rihab Souri told Magharebia that the length of time allowed for science exams was insufficient to enable candidates to obtain good results.

Teacher Jamal Salimi believes that although pass rates are still low, the results so far are a major improvement over last year. Some teachers criticise students’ lack of ability, which they believe is the reason why many candidates are unable to access higher education. "If the pass rates are still low, it’s because they reflect the true abilities of candidates. The exams are there to ensure that the better students get through," said Arabic teacher Jawad Hatit.

I think that the Moroccan ministry of national education has made the exams difficult, and I say to those who haven't passed, next year.

hanane Posted 2007-06-22

Salam alaikoum. I'm one of the students who have passed successfully the baccalaureate exams this year. I think that there's no improvement at all as over 60% of the candidates either qualified for the second round or failed. And even those who managed to pass, most of them got a moderate pass which is almost unacceptable as the student who gets such grade should just throw that diploma and join the university which is avoided by students, namely because no higher institute or school accept students with low grades. So if those who failed are sad because they didn't pass, those who passed are also sad as they got a grade that isn't acceptable in Moroccan schools, so their success is just in appearance.

The girls are the biggest cheaters in Morocco.

moha Posted 2007-06-22

Berber activists blame Arabization for the high illiteracy rate in Morocco - - 56 percent of its citizens cannot read -- because Berber children often drop out when confronted with teachers who speak only Arabic. They also blame it for the continued poverty of most Berbers. Fifty percent of Moroccans live on less than $50 a month, and most of the poor are Berbers.

I want the results of the baccalaureate exam

rachid Posted 2007-06-23

If you really want to move forward in Morocco, you need to change the people’s horrible personalities.

AMENZOU Posted 2007-06-24

Azoul everybody,as an african man (of course Moroccan), i would like to say that the chief matter that students encounter in this admirable amazigh land is that they do not get a stong foundation when they are in the first stages of their development. Let us be logical just for a bit, and let us conffess that the policy of the government is main drawback that weakens develoipment in Morocco. That is to say the policy of arabisation is what constantly makes morocco plenty of illeterate people and rate of illeteracy is high. As student, we hope that the government will understand that we disagree with such barbaric policy, and that it should confess that Thamazight is an official language in Morocco. Thanmirt attass.

Where is justice, we're really oppressed and the prayer of the oppressed is answered. We're in the second session, and in the regional I got 11, and I am sure that I did the exam in the best way, where's democracy, where's transparency, where's sincerity, where's the transparency you've been claiming for years, they sell our grades to the fools who don't deserve them without making any efforts, by God, this is unfair.

R Zaki Posted 2007-06-25

Salam Alaikum, Hanane I am very happy for you. I can tell you are very good student for the fact your english is impeccable. Nevermind the bigots like rachid who calls girls are cheaters. Citoyen Posted 2007-06-27

There is what we call the system... if you want to succeed, you must follow it. There is no other choice- in effect, the bac results reflect in some way the quality of the Moroccan educational system, the objectives seem somewhat ambiguous, and the students remain the primary victims. (Without talking about emotional and physical stress) The equation has numerous parameters, so the solution isn't as easy as all that.

معنديش Posted 2007-06-28

No salam, no talk, shame on you! 9.99? That's irrational, this is unfair, do you have no mercy? Don't hurt my feelings (don't put that grade to begin with, you should have given me the average and give me no hope, no problem, no need for that second session, [expletive] on you and your ministry of education, you're all fakers. May God treat you according to your faith, and even if I had got that baccalaureate, I swear by God that I would have put it in the toilet.

Salam alaikoum, congratulations to all those who received the baccalaureate diploma in Morocco and patience to those who didn't get it hoping from God that they will get in a future occasion with the help of God. In fact, the policy of education in Morocco is deteriorating as a result of the changes introduced at the beginning of the reform of the first year of the baccalaureate (regional exam). On this occasion, I address a call to the Ministry of National Education in order to restructure the internal system of the education project as it's not in favour of all the students in the Kingdom of Morocco. As teaching isn't the same in the Kingdom of Morocco, every institute has its educational system. Thank you.

mohamed Posted 2007-07-19

Hi, I think that passing the exam is associated with the qualifications of the candidates, their hard-work and their efforts in studies which might raise the rate of success of the candidates.

karim amlos Posted 2007-09-29

To tell the truth, education in Morocco is still lacking so many things. But thanks to God, this is not just the case in morocco, but in all Arab countries. I hope there will be an interest in this sector as all developed countries have achieved development thanks to this sector. As to you Hamza, don’t worry, the exam will be inchallah easy. But in spite of that you should review your lessons from the beginning. Ok?

tima Posted 2007-11-27

Hi. I'm really sorry for all the students who weren't successful in the exams. Honestly, I was concerned when I read the article because I will sit for the exam this year and I have no good idea about completing this exam.

معتصم بالله Posted 2007-12-31

Salam alaikoum. I will sit for the baccalaureate exams; I hope that the national exam will be reasonable for all. If we consider things seriously, we’ll find out that those who work hard will achieve a good result al this is accompanied with prayers and worship to God Almighty. Yes I agree with some friends about the injustice of some teachers to the students. We should just be patient. Finally, oh Lord we ask you by your great names and qualities not to make us among the oppressors, and make us among the faithful. Salam alaikoum.

ادريس ايت الحاج Posted 2008-01-20

I think that Morocco is experiencing a very difficult period, in terms of education. The ministry of national education sincerely didn’t know how to develop education. Instead of improving it, it has complicated it. I don't know the real cause. They don’t need so much experience in this field. God grants success to everyone.

Firstly I thank the administrators of this forum. I address my message to all the students of the baccalaureate in my country, Morocco. I advise them to work hard in order to achieve their goal. Believe me when I tell you that I obtained the baccalaureate without preparing for it. But I did so with a grade point average insufficient to allow me to enter any high level institute. I just stayed at home and strolled the streets as they say. I no longer know my fate in the future. I call upon all the students to be patient and work hard and the results won’t be disappointing. I am thinking of leaving Morocco now but I know that I will miss it and miss its people. I wish you all success. May you get good results. If you work hard, you will reap good results.

No and a thousand nos to buying and selling results in this state of law and correctness. This is the biggest shame ever. students who are only good at cheating pass and students who study day after day, fail. There is no future for studies in Morocco. They say that the pass rates are low. Oh, oh! Stop teasing people's sons! They are the fathers of tomorrow and they might teach your sons. So beware, beware. If you insult you will be insulted. Hi. For me, the 2008 baccalaureate exams were very difficult for literature students. Even if they get good results, they don't have many hopes or opportunities because the majority of branches in the ESTA are for scientific students. This also applies for higher institutes. Therefore, the only outlets for them are university, law and private schools. Sincerely yours, Taourirt.

الدكتور محسن Posted 2008-06-17

Salam alikoum. The problem is serious my brothers; it is not about the baccalaureate itself, but rather what comes afterwards. In our experience, we find difficulty in communicating with students who studied in Arabic when we studied in French. This is the real problem. Either secondary studies should be in French or studies at the university should be in Arabic. This is on the one hand. On the other hand, concerning the baccalaureate, for me, it is not a fair judge of the students because some of them don’t deserve the distinction awarded to them while others deserve a lot and they receive only a satisfactory pass on their certificate. Here I would like to mention the role of grading, the role of the grader and the role of the supervisor. Therefore, I say: fear God in the students' papers. For this reason, I suggest that students take an exam in all the superior schools, then those who know and those who don’t know won’t get the same scores. Peace, mercy and blessings of God be upon you.

hassnaa Posted 2008-06-17

Salam. I am very scared about the results. Pray with me to pass. I wish success to everyone. The exam was difficult. The teachers were discriminatory and didn’t offer equal opportunities. It is clear, all the students have cheated. Only those who didn’t leave their tables didn't cheat.

faty Posted 2008-06-25

I have nothing to say. Everything that I say is true. May God take revenge on the correctors if they have cheated us.

nawal Posted 2008-06-25

Salam alikum everyone. What I will tell you is the following: may God reward everyone according to his intention. May God take revenge. May God bring us good results in this second session.

sofia Posted 2008-06-27

I ask God that the second session will be easy, that teachers will be a little understanding and not be severe with us in correcting because we need to pass.

نادية Posted 2008-06-27

Salam alikum. I am a student from Zagoura. There is one thing. You were unfair to the people of Foum Essour. This is the first time it happens in Tamkroute. This is a shame.

fatima Posted 2008-06-30

For the brother, there is nothing. If you get the baccalaureate with a 10 grade, just go and do what you said you will do. Because in this country, you should take the baccalaureate with a 14 grade and more. Otherwise, you should find someone to pay for you a private school. But if only they could find solutions for us to study and teachers to explain to us. By God we would have received more than 14. This year I haven't studied English and I don't even know what it is about. So I said to myself that I would try to study it alone but I nearly got mad.

khalid Posted 2008-06-30

I am one of the students who was a victim of the regional exam and the correction of teachers, especially the teacher who corrected my math papers. May God take revenge on the one who was unfair to me. I hope that the subjects of the second session will be up to standard.

mohamed Posted 2008-06-30

Oh Lord grant success to everyone.

abd el hanin Posted 2008-06-30

I am a poor student studying in the baccalaureate. I had 10.77. I will take the second session because a [expletive] gave me zero in English.

.......... Posted 2008-06-30

Salam alikoum. We ask you to make the mock exam easy. The questions of the national exam were beyond our reach. Our only hope now is the second session.

fati Posted 2008-07-01

May God guide you. Tamgroute Zagoura in the Sour.

فدوى Posted 2008-07-03

The second session of the baccalaureate was very difficult.

محمد Posted 2008-07-04

I am a student from Meknes. I say as a student that there are no more good studies in this Morocco. They pass just by cheating without lying to God. Everyone knows the cheating that goes on during the day of the exam. May God guide everyone. Salam alaikum.

ياسين Posted 2008-07-04

There are no more studies in Morocco, especially in Zagora where even those who start in the 12th month can get the baccalaureate or beg for it in front of the mosque. May God take revenge.

ايمان Posted 2008-07-07

I ask God Almighty to grant success to everyone. I hope from the Lord to pass in the second session even if some subjects were difficult. I also hope that the respectable teachers will correct with conscience. Imane from Casablanca.

مهند Posted 2008-07-07

Praise be to God for everything.

السوسي Posted 2008-07-08

Please, if anyone has a site for the results, give it to me. May God reward you with good.

salim Posted 2008-07-15

Why do you offer a second session and you know how many will pass? Why are you unfair to literature students? This is too much. We have studied all the programme. What do you want more? We did all our efforts, but why all this, why?

رياص Posted 2008-07-27

Very good overall.

sara -tetouan Posted 2008-08-31

Hi. I am one of the students who succeeded in the baccalaureate literature exam. I want to say to some of my colleagues who say that they studied hard but failed, studying hard isn’t enough. The important thing is that you must understand as well the moral condition with which you enter on the day of the exam. I haven’t learnt the lessons by heart but during the last ten days I understood the lessons and passed. I was sure that I won’t pass. But, praise be to God, I passed in the first session. Many students with me failed because they learnt the lessons by heart without understanding them. I wish success to those who will sit for the baccalaureate next year. I tell them don’t rely on the idea that you studied but failed. Review your courses and understand your lessons. Take it from my experience.
