Al-Qaeda video masks deep fissures within group
2007-05-10
Al-Jazeera recently aired a video allegedly showing al-Qaeda Organisation in the Islamic Maghreb preparing for their April attacks in Algiers. Some believe the video is an attempt to conceal the group’s internal weakness stemming from its recent shift in tactics and ideology.

A video showing preparations for the April 11th terrorist attacks in Algeria and featuring statements by terrorists could be an attempt to mask fissures within the terrorist group that perpetrated the killings, Algerian analysts have said.
The video, aired by the Al-Jazeera satellite network on Tuesday (May 8th), allegedly showed members of the al-Qaeda Organisation in the Islamic Maghreb fitting three cars with explosives, and featured statements by the suicide bombers taped before they leave to carry out the attacks. The attacks occurred simultaneously on the morning of April 11th, near government offices and a police station in Algiers, killing 33 and injuring 54 others.
The tape also contains an address by the organisation's leader Abdelmalek Deroukdel, alias Abou Moussab Abdelwadoud, urging Algerian youths to join him.
Many Algerian analysts have suggested the video was released to counter a wave of criticism levelled by some of the terrorist group's members, who have recently challenged the bloody strategy the leaders of the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC) have adopted since announcing their alliance with al-Qaeda.
"This umpteenth pronouncement by the leader Deroukdel is part of their brainwashing strategy, and is evidence of the gravity of the situation within the terrorist group, which is facing internal disputes which threaten to blow it apart," commented Anis Rahmani, managing editor of Algerian newspaper Ech Chourouk. "This situation is similar to that which the Armed Islamic Group (GIA) went through in 1997 and 98, when a number of leaders expressed disapproval of the collective killings perpetrated against civilians by leader Antar Zouabri," he added. Rahmani cited as an example GSPC founder Hassan Hattab, who left the GIA because of his opposition to the killing of civilians.
Ikram Ghioua, a writer for the Algerian daily L’Expression, said that "the suicide bombing route chosen by the leader of the al-Qaeda network has given rise to a tremendous fitna (discord) in the ranks of the armed groups which are still active in the interior of the country, and has broken through the deadly intransigence exhibited by some leaders". According to Ghioua, Deroukdal "is facing real opposition from many of these elements, which have yet to be convinced by the methods al-Qaeda has been using in Iraq".
Hattab had reacted to the April 11th attacks by denouncing the "drift" by the group he founded, and also stated his readiness to lay down his weapons, along with a hundred of his followers, to further the cause of the charter for peace and national reconciliation. Also last month, the group’s southern leader, Mokhtar Belmokhtar, alias Laaouar, also announced his intentions to lay down arms in support of the charter. Belmokhtar is said to possess so much influence in the terrorist sphere that many analysts feel his announcement heralds a real schism in the movement. It was Belmokhtar, through his extensive network in Algeria and the neighbouring countries, who ensured that the fighters in the north of the country were supplied with weapons.
Brahim Boufarik, one-time top official in the Algerian branch of al-Qaeda, concurred, speaking with local press about the rising tide of disagreement among the group's leaders over the new tactics being employed. Boufarik was quoted as saying by Ech Chorouk on Tuesday that the group's "national leader has appointed young recruits to head up local sections, to marginalise longer-standing members who oppose his new strategy".

In the name of God, praise be to God, we ask for His assistance and forgiveness, we ask God to rid us of the evils of our souls and bad deeds, those guided by God cannot be misguided, and those misguided by God cannot be guided by anyone. I witness that there is no God but Allah and I witness that Mohamed is a worshipper and messenger of God. “O ye who believe! Fear Allah as He should be feared, and die not except in a state of Islam”, O mankind! reverence your Guardian-Lord, who created you from a single person, created, of like nature, His mate, and from them twain scattered countless men and women;- reverence Allah, through whom ye demand your mutual, and the wombs: for Allah ever watches over you”, “O ye who believe! Fear Allah, and say a word directed to the Right; That He may make your conduct whole and sound and forgive you your sins; He that obeys Allah and His Messenger, has already attained the highest achievement”. The truest speech is the Book of God, and the best guidance is the guidance of Mohamed, peace and prayer be upon him,…Oh Muslims and monotheists, everyone was pleased last week with the news broadcast by the media about the blessed operations of the security forces on the hideouts of the dissidents of the era. This shows the concern of the security forces in this blessed country to track the destructive schemes of the dissidents. Praise and thanks to God…But what hurts us and hurts every Muslim and reasonable person is the persistence of these dissidents in their depravation on earth without any right in the name of religion. God says “Say: "Shall we tell you of those who lose most in respect of their deeds? Those whose efforts have been wasted in this life, while they thought that they were acquiring good by their works? They are those who deny the Signs of their Lord and the fact of their having to meet Him (in the Hereafter): vain will be their works, nor shall We, on the Day of Judgment, give them any weight”. El Hafed Ibn Kathir said, Ali Ibn Abi Taleb, God bless him, said, Addahak and many others said: they are Harouria, i.e. the Khaouarej (dissidents). In the name of God. Oh Lord show us the right path and guide us to it. Show us the wrong path and guide us to avoid it. God is the Greatest. Those who want Jihad should focus on correcting themselves, homes and families [as the lord said] (O, You Mohammed, admonish your nearest relatives). They can therefore see right from wrong. If anyone has a doubt, he/she should ask the scholars of the nation such as Sheikh Ferkous in Algeria, Sheikh Mekarkab, and Sheikh Abdelkahar. The scholars in the East have issued a fatwa on the Jihad in Algeria. They think it is not valid(see statements by modern sheikhs: Nacer Eddine El Albani, Imam Ibn Baz, and imam Ibn Athimine, May the Lord Have mercy on their soul, the best scholars of the time. Oh Lord Make us among the rightly guided, and among the Protected. I ask the president of the Republic Mr. Abdelaziz Bouteflika to expedite the appointment of a moufti for the Republic. I hope that he will be Sheikh Ferkous, recommended by the great scholars of Mecca. God grants success. Bye.

This message is for the President of the Republic, Mr. Bouteflika. Mr. President, if you truly want what is good for the Algerian people, then we would like you to resign: you do not represent the ideal man to govern. You have broken Islam, you have broken our country’s economy and you have brought poverty upon Algeria. Internationally, you have sold off Algeria after real men had sacrificed their lives to free it. You are just playing around with us; you are not the king you think you are.

Imagine that they do everything in the name of Islam, they put bridges on roads in order to rob the money of the citizens in the name of Islam... They kill innocents in streets and public places in the name of... Islam... they rape women in the name of Islam... as they consider them captives and slaves and that they have the right to treat them as they wish... in some places they have even gone as far as preventing people from the evening prayer in Ramdan... imagine!

How dare you defy the rules of God, accuse Muslims of disbelief, you’re the enemies of religion and the nation. You’re funded by the Jews and the Christians to fight Islam in its home. You’re the followers of America. Bush the cursed said we will transfer war to your homes. Why do Ben Laden and Al Zawahiri appear only on occasions to serve the interests of the Jews and Christians in the pretext of fighting terrorism and then enter and steal the resources of Arab countries. Go to Palestine and Chechnya and fight the infidels. Truly, you’re mercenaries and a puppet to serve the needs of America. What is happening in Algeria is in reality a foreign scheme. And it has achieved its goal. This is reflected by the West's study of this country's history and its adoption of a policy analysing the present conditions. The West has established a legal foundation for this country which suffered from colonisation and has been subject of western hegemonic policy. The West expected its schemes to result in this outcome. It has achieved its goals as a result of international alliances which have many considerations for this country. The poor living conditions are the result of the West's policy towards Algeria through the rise of the consumer goods prices. Although this country has suffered and is still suffering, thanks be to God despite all this. I am a university student in political sciences. I will work to eliminate the exhaustion of this country's natural and executive human resources and I will set up a heavy industry. Everyone knows that we will fall in the trap of the West's strategy if we don’t act. These are the words of a person who loves this country and wishes it all the best. Time will show this. Long live Algeria. Kadi Sofiane. Theniet El Had.

I read in Al Chourouk recently that it was the Zionists who outlined and planned the scenario of the bloody decade, believing that the sectarian dissent would throw Algeria in a circle of blood in order to get rid of us and remove us from their circle of movement. Algeria is one of their worst enemies. They described us as cunning, by our strong relationship with God and His messenger. True. If we contemplate our traditions and customs, we find that they are not contrary to the pure Islam. They also consider our army to be one of the strongest armies. This is why we constitute a threat for them. Didn’t we beat them in the Sinai battle of 1974? So the Jews, may God curse them, are the cause of all this. Don’t let them exploit us, we the Ummah of Mohamed, we should sacrifice our souls to the message of the Prophet, Jerusalem, Mecca…Islam. Moreover, we shouldn’t forget the sacrifices of our liberator masters. Had they known what would become of Algeria, they wouldn’t have carried out the holy war and fought. They witnessed the worst sufferings. Please imagine with me a scene of their sacrifices. You saw it in a film. It is terrifying… now we live on a land which was irrigated by their blood. So how can this Algerian blow himself up and kill his brothers? Shame on him. Martyrdom is for the cause of God and the nation and not for the sake of voracity of the enemies. I hope from everyone who charges the president with responsibility to remember how we were and how we are. Don’t you know that Islam forbids dissension to the rule even if he is an oppressor? What about fighting him… certainly the fire of the hell is your fate. Algeria, Algeria, Algeria, Algeria …is a legacy in our hands so let’s preserve it. I hope that you understood what I said…Salam.

The acts of Al Qaeda in Algeria is just a drop of water in comparison with the acts of the oppressive regime against our heroic people. This doesn’t mean that I agree with the acts of Al Qaeda because it is a huge injustice and disbelief in Islam. Respectable scholars, may God protect them, have issued Fatwas and it isn’t necessary to talk about that, but rather what the regime did to our heroic people, they made slaves out of them whose sole concern is to find food and drinking, following the passions, spreading alcohol and drugs, now it is accessible by the simplest citizens even young kids who have become addicted to it so that the people forget what happens to them and aren’t concerned about politics or Algeria. May God rest the souls of the martyrs and protect Algeria from terrorism, Al Qaeda and oppressive rules, and wake them from their cursed sleep. Amen.

Peace and mercy of God be upon you. My Muslim brothers, don’t be disillusioned by those who pretend to do Jihad in Algeria and raise the flag of Islam. They are a group of people who were disillusioned by groups who understand nothing about Islam. They allure children and adolescents with mobile phones in order to carry out their terrorist schemes and they promise them paradise. There is no power and no will but from God Almighty. Where is dear Palestine, what happened to dear Iraq and Afghanistan? By God, if I found someone to take me to Palestine, I would have fought Jews until martyrdom. Our brothers who caused the events of 1992 were senior executives and officials in the State. When they noticed that Jihad was ruining Algeria, they relinquished armed action and repented, God has accepted their repentance. But those who remain today are the debris of society. They kill, blow up public facilities, commit adultery, they don’t have anything to eat, they are educationally and culturally weak, and they issue Fatwas, by what right? Our brothers in Tunisia and Morocco are building their economy with tourism, what about us? A million Algerians visit Tunisia every year. Illegal immigration, Kamikaze, cannabis, nudity… Haven’t you wondered why there is poverty on the one hand and the Israelis on the other hand? As regards politics, it is policy to leave politics to its people. Leave Bouteflika to his business. Leave our dirty laundry to us. You who have no national spirit, it is better to distribute the costs of electoral campaigns among the people and let him rule all his life, raise your hands and work as you work in Europe (Dust people, may God save you), education and health services for free, what do you want?! By the way, I salute all members of the national popular army, the national security who joined this profession for its love and not through favouritism or bribery, for working for the safety and security of dear Algeria. Long live Algeria, free and independent.

I do not believe my brothers are in Al-Qaeda. I think this has to be a conspiracy by all the enemies of Islam, helped along by the ignorance of Muslims. Allah is bigger than all of this.
non maghrebin Posted 2008-04-17
In response to all the Algerians who are saying that their country was a victim of terrorism: No, gentlemen, it was a civil war wherein the Algerians slit one another’s throats like lambs to the slaughter! And, through some sort of formulation that only they know about, the generals chose one of their own to be president to ensure their impunity and then stopped their butchery. And, this machination is still going strong for a third term. Algeria is a den of terrorism. The entire world knows this reality. Do not try to muddle the issue; there is no point where the idea came from for a FBI office, so they do not infiltrate them via Europe by going through neighbouring Morocco, the closest one to Europe.

No, inhabitant of the Maghreb, you are blowing your mouth off. We are laughing to death thanks to your idiocy. Such human idiocy makes one laugh. The dogs bark while the caravan of banality passes by. And then the dogs just go on barking, just like you, who, unknowingly, has a mouth. Certain other humans do too. But, I would rather avoid this intellectual banality and the distractions of this discussion. That is to say: adios, goodbye—I am never coming back to this website.
karim Posted 2008-05-01
Who are you, you who pretend to be Muslims and you kill innocents, including women and children? You undermine and insult the country you allege. By God, Algeria will remain resistant against any enemy, the proof is that despite all your terrorist attempts you haven’t succeeded, and you won’t succeed because Algeria has men who protect it even if it costs them their lives. Where are you from? The tradition of the messenger of God, peace and prayer upon him, he never harmed any human being on earth even infidels, although they caused him a lot of harm, but replied with goodness? You are living like pigs in mountains and Oueds. You aren’t Muslims, you are rather highwaymen you have despaired of the mercy of God and you are renegades. God suffices us and He is the best protector.

An observation about the word Khawarij my brothers? The word Khawarij isn’t used for the fighting brothers in the mountain because they didn’t go against the rule of rulers who apply the law of God, but the opposite, true Khawarij disobeyed Ali, God bless him, who used to rule with the law of God. In that case, it isn’t legitimate to go against the rule of the ruler because he applies the law of God. So please, know the meaning of your words.

I am a retired person from the national gendarmerie. My brothers, salam alikoum. The acts perpetrated by terrorists in Algeria are devilish and malicious, and aren’t associated with Islam. They aren’t the acts of a Muslim. They call themselves Mujahids, they are killers and vampires. They call us despots, by God I witness sincerely that members of the national gendarmerie, the national safety and members of the national popular army work hard and fulfil their mission in the best way. Despite everything I endured, everything is trouble-free for the sake of dear Algeria. Although I am a victim, psychologically, but I support the action of his Excellency the president of the republic concerning the national reconciliation. Long live Algeria. May God rest the souls of my colleagues.
عبد الحكيم Posted 2008-05-24
Oh Lord destroy the enemies of religion and dissipate them. I am one of the families of the victims of the attacks of the terrorists, the dogs, who don’t fear God. They killed my uncle and his friend in the attack of Yesser in Boumerdes. Oh Lord take revenge on these criminals.

This website offers nothing good. The worst part of all of this is that half of the comments are written by Moroccans hiding behind Algerian pseudonyms in order to spit their hatred on Algeria. Personally, I answer you with “Long live Bouteflika today, tomorrow and forever more!” All the Algerians are with Bouteflika, and that is how it is.

What is happening in the Middle East and North Africa is colonisation and dependency on the major states. We Arabs, if we had listened to each other, and tried to consider the mistakes of those before us, would have been the pioneers of this world because God is with us. Eh Arabs be conscious of what is happening around you. America is the cause of our plight and division. We are strong in our belief and weak in our acts. I am from Algeria, a university student. I follow the news of Arabs and America is always the only cause destabilising the Arab nation. This shows that Arabs are strong and western states fear them.

You and what you hide in your hearts for the Maghreb people and Algerians in generals as if we aren’t Arabs. Change your opinions, Algerians, there is no terrorism here. It is the work of those who hate us and you have promoted that with all martial spirit. You have added fuel to the fire between nations and rulers and between the people themselves. By God, mind your own affairs, we can better take care of ourselves so don’t interfere with us. Thank you, your words are right, X0.

In the name of God. Difference is a blessing, and stuborness make it an evil. The way to get a solution is honest and constructive dialog… “These are they whose labor is lost in this world's life and they think that they are well versed in skill of the work of hands”.
محمد علاباوي Posted 2008-06-11
In the name of God most gracious most merciful. May God guide us to the right path, amen. Why do you do this terrorism? By God this is unacceptable! Be patient, God is with those who are patient. Why do you do this? Why do you kill a man, old man, woman or kid? Why? Why not kill those who made you angry? Why do you destroy the people who have been working all their lives to build a house and then you destroy it? By God this is a shame, may God guide the people who have gone astray, and guide us.

I live in Kenani street in Jelfa Wilaya, Algeria.
ابودر Posted 2008-06-14
The verse of God ‘They believe in some of the book and disbelieve in some’ applies to the Algerian people. By God, we don’t know to which faith do these people belong. When Danish people offended the messenger of God, peace and prayer they made a mess, and they have the right. But we shouldn’t forget that we do more serious things in Algeria, we insult God the Almighty publicly without fear or shame.
سليمان Posted 2008-06-15
Algeria is the country of free men, the country of steady men. If anyone thinks that he is Persian or Arab, he should just look at the books of history and look for his country of origin in order to join his family. The land of Algeria is wide and the hearts of the free men are even wider so don't narrow them please. Our country is wide for everyone, Amazighs, Arabized Arabs, Muslims and Christians. Let's all live in safety. Let's think of catching up with developed countries. We shouldn't take care of the fundamentalists and not give them an importance. We have no doubt that they will fall as long as there are free men in this country.
شجاع الجزائري Posted 2008-06-29
Peace and blessings of God be upon you. First of all, to my brothers who raised the question above, I want to thank you indeed for that. Let me start by saying that I am a member of the Algerian special forces. The Book of God Almighty is the truest of all books and the best guidance is that of our Prophet Mohamed peace and prayers of God be upon him. The worst of all things is unwanted creation. Every such creation is an undesirable innovation and every such innovation is misguidance and every misguidance is in hellfire. Those who proclaim to be true Muslims and call themselves Al Qaeda and the Mudjahideen must know that Jihad is never the killing of innocent people whether they are Jews, Christians, or Russian atheists. The Messenger of God, best prayers and peace be upon him, said on the day he entered Mecca, despite the harm he sustained at the hands of Quraish tribes, “Don’t kill women and children. Don’t kill the elderly or the injured. Battle only those who wage an armed war against you”. These are the values of Islam when it comes to warfare. But these mercenaries and vagabonds are in no way close to the realm of Islam. They are rather misguided dissenters. The Messenger of God, peace and prayer of God be upon him, is reported to have said about such people “if I lay my hand on them, I would inflict upon them the worst killing ever” that is because they were the ruthless killers of Imam Ali ben Abi Taleb, and before him imams Omar Ben Alkhattab and Omar Ben Abdelaziz May God be pleased with them all. These al-Qaeda gangsters are no more than American infiltrators as is Ben Laden and others. I will give you a living example of true Jihad for the cause of God. Leader Al Khattab, may God Have mercy on his soul and accept him among the martyrs, was first faced with the wrongly innovative Sufis when he entered Chechnya. But he chose not to fight them or even brave a useless dialogue with them. Why? Simply because they were Muslims who believe that ‘there is God worthy of worship except Allah, and that Mohamed is His messenger”. Their lives were not to be taken, May peace and prayer of God be upon this hero. A Muslim is a brother to other Muslims. He must not betray or oppress them. The life of a Muslim, his money and honor are sacrosanct to another Muslim. These mercenaries should therefore be considered outside the faith of Islam. My brothers! We are all your brothers in faith here in Algeria; we are the proud grandchildren of the historic leader and statesman Oqba Ben Nafiaa, we are the lions of God and His messenger. We will be relentless in fighting them God willing. If America thinks that it has succeeded in dividing us, let her know that it is just the opposite. By God this has only bolstered our belief and conviction in God Almighty. It has rather united us on the word that “There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah”. We say "no" to terrorism! We are ready, thank God, to face up to any power foreign or domestic. No to America! No to Israel! Yes to a unified Arab and Muslim nation. May God protect our benefactor Bouteflika! Amen. Peace is the best to end with.
على بن محمد Posted 2008-07-02
Praise be to God with Whose grace the good deeds are achieved. God the Almighty says “Whatever benefit comes to you, it is from God, and whatever misfortune befalls you, it is from yourself”. I say to the Algerians that your inflictions are the results of your deeds which were never committed by anyone before you. So repent to God and He will release you from Al Qaeda which is harassing you besides the regime which is oppressing you and plundering your money.

In the name of God the most gracious the most merciful. I salute the Algerian army from the soldier to the lieutenant. You are the base of Algeria. Thanks to you, Algeria has remained steady. You have spent nights in mountains with death tracking you. May God grant you victory. Terrorism in Algeria will not stand up again because its fighting methods show this. It was unable to resist the army in mountains face to face because they are cowards. So they started attacking civilians. If they think that they will stand up, the army will break their feet. I am one of the members of the army who will volunteer. So go ahead soldiers. God will reward you. Long live the army firstly, secondly and thirdly. Go to eliminate terrorism, heroes.

Our cultural, social and familial history, civilisation and heritage are Muslim, Arab and Berber (or Berber and Arab). What ever our origins may be, we owe each other mutual respect and recognition. We have to live and work together in order to raise our countries, the countries of North Africa, above underdevelopment, illiteracy, poverty, drought and so on. We have to unite ourselves in order to build a society on the path to development, co-operation and social progress for everyone. We have to unite ourselves to fight against all religious extremists and fundamentalists, who sow but hatred, terror and death. For each and every one of us, our destiny, what ever our religions, political opinions or philosophies may be, is a common on. This is the true Jihad that awaits us: We are to be in the service of our peoples for a better life, brotherhood and solidarity. God show us the right path. God assist us to find progress, prosperity and happiness.

Yes you are hiding the sun with the sieve. You talk about Islam as if you were scholars of this Umma. But you are the descendants of Abdellah Ben Saloul the head of hypocrites. You like singers, entertaining soirées like Tamer Hosni, your daughters, mothers, sisters, girls welcome him with kisses and hugs. Before you speak of Islam, Moujahid men for the cause of God, keep your unveiled adulterer girls and mothers home then talk about Islam you hypocrites of the era. أبوجهاد Posted 2009-07-26
I have read many times your comments but unfortunately I feel as if you don't belong to Islam. This is a big shame. You talk about Islam and you don't know its obligations. You have said many times that Muslims shouldn't be fought. If you talk about something from religion you have to bring evidence from the Book and Sunna. I say Jihad is permissible against some Muslims if they are oppressive or if they don't rule by the orders of God. This is supported by the saying of God the Almighty “And if two parties of the believers quarrel, make peace between them; but if one of them acts wrongfully towards the other, fight that which acts wrongfully until it returns to Allah's command”, and the saying of the messenger of God peace and prayer be upon him “The blood of a Muslim person who witnesses that there is no other God but Allah and that I am the messenger of God is permissible only in there cases: the old man who commits adultery, soul for soul and the one who leaves his religion and leaves the group”. The messenger of God says the truth. Have you heard about the story of the Camel or Seffine? Oh ignorant people, when Ali, God bless him, fought Moaouiya Ben Abi Soufiane, Amr Ben Al Ass, Aicha and other companions, God bless them, when they all asked for retaliation for the blood of Othmane Ben Affane, God bless them all. By God, you have the qualities of hypocrites: love for life and hatred of death. I advise every Muslim woman or man who loves God and His messenger to go to study their religion. It is a duty for you. Don't talk about issues you don't know. Salam alikum.
