Nessma TV kicks off Star Academy Maghreb

2007-03-19

Star Academy Maghreb kicked off on Friday -- a first for parent company and host, Nessma TV, a satellite network devoted to Maghreb culture.

Text and photos by Jamel Arfaoui for Magharebia in Tunis – 19/03/07

The fourteen Star Academy Maghreb contestants

After several weeks of waiting, Nessma TV viewers saw Moroccan television host Nabila Kilani announce the official launch of the first Star Academy Maghreb competition Friday (March 16th).

In the presence of a group of known artists, among them Tunisian singer Saber Rebai and Libyan Cheb Jilani, audiences were treated for the first time to a look at the 14 finalists who will compete in the first regional singing competition over the next four months.

The finalists are: Faten: Tunisia, 23; Khairi: Libya, 18; Kaoutar: Morocco, 21; Jameleddine: Algeria, 25; Hajar: Morocco, 20; Ahmed: Libya, 23; Farah: France, 19; Farid: Algeria, 22; Yosra: Tunisia, 19; Abdelhamid: Morocco, 29; Soraya: Tunisia, 24; Badredine: France, 32; Dounia: Algeria, 22; Firas: Tunisia, 22.

Dressed in chic traditional attire and appearing before a rich red backdrop, host Kilani addressed television audiences "from Tobruk to Casablanca" and introduced the first performance: a Tunisian-Libyan duo singing a traditional Tunisian song, "Hazz Ayounik". Other performances followed, alternating between Western and local singing.

Meriam Bezzazi, media representative for Nessma TV, told Magharebia that Friday was a strong opening, and the large number of text messages the channel received from all over the Maghreb and France [broadcast at the bottom of the screen] "forecasts the very best and indicates that the numbers of viewers would increase as the competitions heated up". Since the launch of the test broadcast last month, the channel has received short messages from all over the Maghreb, most of them expressing happiness about the launch of a channel pertaining to the Maghreb. The channel's programming will initially be limited to Star Academy.

Recently Nabil Karoui, whose Karoui and Karoui group owns Nessma TV, said the staff that will oversee the students throughout the competition are "experts in the world of performing arts, such as Algerian artist Baziz and Tunisian director Khadija Al-Makshar".

Maghreb audiences will be able to watch the first "prime" -- the weekly performance where all contestants showcase their talents -- on March 23rd.

The Karoui brothers expressed their satisfaction with early indicators after Nessma TV’s test broadcast, saying they "[push] us to work more and more to make this first Maghreb experiment a success".

Viewer Hichem Dissem, a French language teacher, said he had hoped Nessma TV would open with another programme, "so the audience wouldn’t be surprised by the launch of Star Academy Maghreb straight off". Hajeur Baklouti, an agricultural engineer, said she was bored watching the Star Academy launch, and was not even pleased with the decor. "I think they will realise this … we [shouldn’t] forget that it’s the first step and we’ll wait to see how things develop", Baklouti said.

Faicel Khammassi, a young North African immigrant from the French city of Sartrouville, complained of his inability to watch the programme. "It’s hard for North Africans in France, and especially residents of apartment buildings, to follow Nessma TV. All houses are equipped with [television] sets that don’t receive NileSat and Arabsat services, and French law prohibits us from installing receivers above the roofs of apartment buildings". Faicel wished "Nessma TV would consider broadcasting its programmes over the Hot Bird satellite".

To promote Star Academy Maghreb and its other programmes, Nessma TV has enlisted the help of celebrities from across the Maghreb, including Algerian Khaled and Tunisians Saber Rebai and Latifa Arfaoui.

Network representatives have said that all of programming will be in local Maghreb dialects, the first such effort made on this scale.

We're all Maghreb people, and I hope from the bottom of my heart that everyone represents his country in the best way so as not to distort the image of his beloved country. Inchallah this is a winning program.

driss Posted 2007-03-27

Star Academy Maghreb is more like Star Academy France!! Use dialects so we can understand, lets hope Eastern countries will understand us. Good luck...

Nadia Posted 2007-03-28

Salaam. I watch this channel because it shows young people from Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria and Libya, which is a real plus. It shows once again we are alone. It would be better to have a channel explaining Islam to our youth. Why not a competition to learn the Qur'an?

3abla Posted 2007-03-28

Wow, this is really nice, but there is a Cheb Khaled in Morocco- Marrakech Hicham Doubiani, I'm fond of him, he has a great voice, I've never seen someone like him I wish he would participate inchallah and good luck.

Greetings from the land of Arabs from the beloved Libya to all our loves ones in the Maghreb. Indeed this channel has unified the Arab spirit.

العربى Posted 2007-04-01

...and has brought us together...Have you seen how the Maghrebi people celebrated the Mouled anniversary? May the Blessing of the Lord be upon him. I hope Arab rulers take a lesson from this gathering.

amine الجزائر ليبيا Posted 2007-04-01

I wish success to all, but I have a comment concerning the lack of use of local dialects much French is used, more than 50 %; we want to show our identity in the Arab Maghreb, namely our local dialects and traditional attire, which is absent. I hope you will take this into consideration. Greetings and respects to all the staff ensuring the success of this channel.

zakaria Posted 2007-04-01

Long live Abd Lhamid and Tangier- we are proud of you and, God willing, you will show them true Tangier people, ok? And God willing Nessma from success to success.

elghoul the algerian harmonica prodigy master of the word and the note... check and more... El Anka they say ask Cheikh el anka and you'll make sure, el anka tell us the name of your successor, the cheikh answered in person, presently no living soul has seen my successor, Sultane of the word and speech,... There can be only one ghoul.

ملاك المغربية Posted 2007-04-02

I wish Nesma channel success, I liked Maghreb Star so much as it gathers all from the Arab Maghreb and presents them in the best image, I wish that the students of the Maghreb star would speak only Arabic so that they can be understood and followed by all Arabs. Thanks.

ناني Posted 2007-04-03

Salam Alaikoum- thank you for this Maghreb channel, but the teachers' evaluation isn't correct as Farid from Algeria is far better than Kaoutar and Soraya, with my respects.

عبد الهادي Posted 2007-04-03

Star Academy Maghreb on Nessma TV channel can be considered as an inevitable choice so that we can present our artistic and creative powers in a way that is complying with our Maghreb culture, traditions and customs from all the parts of the region. Undoubtedly the Arab Maghreb has an important cultural, musical, and artistic heritage with all its types and which isn't yet exploited up to now, namely the distinct new and varied voices with the geographic diversity. This young competitors are considered as a foundation stone for the activation of the Arab Maghreb train whose rails have rusted as a result of the action of a group of selfish and impulsive who tried to drop the region in the abyss and are still working on that unfortunately. When you see the Maghreb star academy the way it's prepared and its staff you are happy. However we see the best competing Maghreb youth quarrelling for the most futile reasons as leaders in the region would do. It's the result of a generation prepared for that where there's no feeling of tolerance and acceptance of the other with all its power and prevalence of selfishness, the go, the rejection of the other and arrogance. In fact we have to do a lot to walk on the same way hand in hand to build the future of the region and exploit together without exception its resources, and prepare for a new generation believing in science, creativity, communication and integration in order to reach the achievements of Europe. And with the strong and true will we'll reach our goal.

عبد الهادي Posted 2007-04-03

Respect your opinion and the other opinion, what I wrote is a true expression from the heart.

عبد الهادي Posted 2007-04-03

You can't build the Arab Maghreb by way of Maghreb Star Academy, but by brainwashing many of us.

abdeladim Posted 2007-04-03

I'm with you to the last minute, you're the best. A note: God elevates those who are modest. Dounia you need some self-confidence. Farid violence isn't a solution to problems. Yousra laugh to life so that it laughs to you. Ahmed the soul of comedy nice the idea of comedian can be better than singer. Jamal the idea of elections is absurd, try something else.

I'm Hajira from Algeria and I want to make clear for the one who calls himself free Khaliji maybe you're right about French speaking, I'm with you but saying that we're without origins isn't true, and if you were a free Khaliji, the free khaliji is respectful, moreover, the people of the Arab Maghreb aren't poor people, is that clear, and please reply if you're courageous, Salam Alaikoum.

Salam Alaykum... I have an important note regarding the title "Star Academy Maghreb". This title made most, maybe all, of the Maghreb population watch the show. We've noticed that some brothers in the show want the title to be "Star Academy Arab Maghreb". Such a title would cause, and it actually did, many people to abandon the show. This show is successful due to its special Maghreb [North African] taste which quite different from Mashreq [Middle Eastern]. As we know, Greater Maghreb, encompasses Arabs and Amazigh, and we all know that there is an Amazigh contestant (Fareed). What made me send this message is that a friend, who used to be a regular watcher of the show, told me that he hated the show because the frequent repitition of the "Arab Maghreb" phrase. They were racist and ...., he said. This happened to my family, my village and the city that I live in. Please, take this seriously. Thank you Nessma. Good idea and we hope it proceeds on the right Maghreb track. We also hope to have more Maghreb shows of all kinds.

sara Posted 2007-04-19

This is Sarah. I vote for Yusrah.

عا مر Posted 2007-04-19

Why is it that everybody seems to like Hajar? Is it her voice or what? Anyways, I wholeheartedly wish that all this fame continues but one day she will stumble in the "Nominees" phase. I nevertheless I will that all contenders word harder to sustain the fame they have so far gained. Good luck and peace to all.

سلوى فيلالي Posted 2007-04-19

Why neither Eastern nor Western? You mean it...

abde leali Posted 2007-04-19

Peace be upon you. Good show! I commend you for it but it still needs better broadcasting! I hope some serious thoughts are given to address it. Thank you.

Nessma channel has opened wide horizons before all Maghrebis especially the Algerian because they have big ambitions and a strong will. I salute Donia, Jamal and Fareed and inshallah [I wish them to become] stars. Thanks to Nessma.

هاجر Posted 2007-04-20

I am Hajar from Ein Azal. Nessma! You have proved that the Maghreb song holds a high rank. I wish you success and would like to say to Dounia that we love her a lot and Jamal, Fareed, inchallah God willing, Star'ac.

Ahmed Posted 2007-04-21

Firas, you are the most romantic man on Star Academy. I hope you succeed in proving that you have the talent a real artist. I am proud of your and all of Tunisia. But the fate of Yosra has shocked us all, because she deserved to be the star. Thank you all, Badrou abd Elhamid, Ahmed Hajer and Kaouthar Faten.

nefissa Posted 2007-04-21

Hello! I wish all the success to Nessma in her début on Star Academy, only: first, the set needs to be redesigned—it is poorly done, there are too many colors and it could be more classy, and, second, I’ve followed the candidates a bit and I think that you are going to run into the same pitfall as Star Academy Lebanon; the idea to have the nominees voted on by their comrades is a poor choice and you can see the result in the second round. I really appreciate voting, but it is clear that certain candidates do their best to distance themselves from other dangerous candidates, such as Soraya, for example, who voted against Yosra… This is completely obvious! She wanted to eliminate her! We had hoped a celebrity would come from voting, and not cold calculations to protect mediocre voices. This is honestly absurd. Don’t conform to the other programs. Have some etiquette, torchbearers of Nessma; this is cheating and in poor form. Otherwise, it is pointless to watch this show: we were against Star Academy Lebanon, and there you go, you have gone and repeated the same mistakes! Make yourselves the exception, if we must have a Maghreb identity, do something to diversify our plan. You are the ones who give the scores, if you don’t do so rationally, it is pointless to do so at all. I would prefer that this kind of voting stopped. Have the professionals and the public do it. This would be much better!!!

وريدة Posted 2007-04-21

We hope that you, participants in Star Academy Maghreb, speak Arabic and quite speaking French because this is an Arabic channel and for the sake of Tarel El Taeb, the Saudis who are supporting Ahmed and Khayri and especially for the eyes of the Libyan little rose living in Saudi Arabia.

وريدة Posted 2007-04-21

Salam Alyaikum 'Little rose from Saudi Arabia'! Nessma is an Arabic channel and you should speak Arabic and abandon French. Ahmed and Khayri are the nicest stars and Libya is with you, so are the fans of Saudi Hilal for Tarek Taeb's sake. All of my friends at the university are with Libya- Ahmed and Khayri. Love from my friend Hafsah from Riyadh.

ملاك الريــــــــــــــــــــف Posted 2007-04-21

Salam Alykum. I am a supporter of Hajar, fan of Zikra. She is the Star and she is Miss Academy... she has a golden voice. However, I am a little worried becuase Yusra is out. Yusra, though proud, has a great talent and a strong voice. Such a loss she is out now.

sousou Posted 2007-04-22

In my opinion, Yosra is the best. She sings very very well. That’s the reason that her friends don’t vote for her. It’s a shame. Though, I am Algerian, the truth is still the truth and Yosra is the star.

اسامة Posted 2007-04-22

مهند الليبي Posted 2007-04-23

Salam Alaikoum...the nice channel and the nicest are the Libyans Ahmed+Khairi...I just want to say one thing stop giving them songs that aren't on the map??? We ask the competition committee in star academy Maghreb to mind the dialects...as if you were right to give Moroccan or Algerian students Libyan songs which we know in Libya??I swear they won't know how to sing them!!!!Finally give Libyans songs from Libya or Arabic songs and you'll see real competition... A long story but to the point...all the success toAhmed and Khairi...

مهند Posted 2007-04-23

هاجر Posted 2007-04-24

First of all Assalam Alaikoum , eecondly, with my respects to the high committee or administration of Maghreb star academy, concerning the return of Yousra and Dounia to the house, it isn't fair to make the two return to the academy, this is contrary to the law of the game. Can other students have the same opportunity like them? Is there no hidden hand in that? I entered and saw some comments about the topic and the decision was unfair the same opinion please correct this mistake

wafa Posted 2007-04-24

The idea to launch only one Star Academy Maghreb is pretty smart: now we are all watching it. A request to the Algerian candidates: be strong, stick to your guns and prove your bravery. Long live the music of The Maghreb and a big salute to the Algerian homeland. This is Wafa from Algeria.

ندى بنت المغرب Posted 2007-04-24

Salam Alaikoum. Firas, you're in the house in order to reach starhood, get out what you have inside of you... you're hiding huge powers, don't hesitate! It's time to say your word in art and I say to Abdelhamid, Badrou, Jamal and others change your attitude towards the teachers, and leave arrogance, and you should know that the public is the judge and not you, don't judge that you're stars we judge you won't reach without the public

I want to know: Dounia doesn't have a voice, how did you choose her a star even if there are other very nice voices? who knows

ناصيب Posted 2007-04-25

Salam Alaikoum, first of all I want to greet Ahmed and Khairi and tell to Ahmed inchallah you're a star for the Nesma channel and its managers I say the channel has lost its credibility because of the return of Yousra and Dounia, we're not against them no but why was that decision not taken before the departure of Dounia, and if Fatin or Khairi were to drop out of the competition will such a decision be taken? It's a significant impartiality, we're sorry for that big mistake where you have fallen and lost millions of viewers

ناصيب Posted 2007-04-25

كمال من المغرب Posted 2007-04-28

The public of the Maghreb is very pleased with this nice initiative, everyone is proud of the nice Maghreb song. The program is 100% successful inchallah. I have a few comments about Friday's prime: 1- The words and voices of the students were not clear because the music was loud. Technicians should review the sound. 2- The idea of the public to be near the students isn't to the point, as the prime is a competition and not a traditional concert, the public should be quiet while the songs are being presented. Or how will the daily exercises offered the students be carried out by the committee led by Mrs Ilham, and how will they be graded? 3- Concerning Nabila, she was upset. It's better to present the prime in the Arabic and French language. Please add another host speaking in French. Thank you.

Hi everyone!

AZZEDDINE Posted 2007-05-07

Salam Alaikoum, my greetings to the Maghreb artists and Nessma channel for this nice initiative, I woulk like to raise three points 1/When the candidate is on the stage, others should sit down, watch and listen to him so that they don't fall in the same mistakes, he should also look at the camera because there are millions of people watching him, 2/ The cameraman or the assistant direct the camera to the right way so that we view the right candidates, 3/ and this is the most important, candidates should vote at the end of the prime for the best voice not on the basis of love or friendship, please accept from me all these instructions, salam alaikoum

نونو Posted 2007-05-07

I love Khairi and Ahmed, Khairi and Ahmed you're the stars

AZZEDDINE DE CASA Posted 2007-05-07

Hello to the candidates. I love you all, Firas, Khairi, Badro, Ahmed and my dear friend Farid. Keep up the good work. And, as for you, Hamid, you are the best especially with the guitar. And, for the girls Yosra, Soraya, Hajar and Farah, you are great. For Donia, you are great but you need to sing a bit louder. Keep up the good work. -This is Azzeddine from Casa

نور Posted 2007-05-07

Yosra is the true star because she’s got talent. Long live Yosra!

انا عبد الصمد Posted 2007-05-07

I like all the participants in Maghreb star academy namely Hajar the princess Snow, she's fascinating with her voice, the light of the moon is Hajar, the bride of the Atlantic Ocean, I would also like to say that Abdelhamid has made a mistake when he chose Dounia to stay in star academy because she needs to straighten out her vocal cords, as for Kaoutar I'm proud of her and her courage and her great voice, and I tell her Kaoutar you've won, you've not lost, and an advice to Abdelhamid, he should know his real voice

hassane Posted 2007-05-07

DONT WARRY AHMED AND KHIARE WE ARE WITH YOU AND HI HAJER YOU AER PUTEFUL AND YOU HAVE NICE FACE AND VOTE AND IN THE END THANKES FOR ALL

ا محمد الجزائر Posted 2007-05-10

My advice to members of star academy is to be calm and sage when they're chosen as nominee, not to utter words which don't reflect them and don't honour them when they're angry, they have to feature the Maghreb artist in his singing, his demure, message, performance, morals and heritage, the equation is simple because the winner is one a young man or young woman, and the best and the one who works harder will win

شمعة Posted 2007-05-11

I'm very happy with the union achieved by our Arab channel which has taken our countries and cities and made them closer. I love the agreement of Hajar, Ahmed, Badrou, Farah, Soraya, Firas, Khairi, Kaoutar, Fatin, Abdelhamid, Farid and the pleasing smile of Jamal the nice

ouisal Posted 2007-05-11

Soraya, have a little respect and consideration for the people watching you. And, shame on you, Firas. Hajar, I wish you good luck; you are the most beautiful. My charming Badro, you are truly a star. Good luck Hamid- Give it all you got. We love you Farah, you are the star of the party.

fadi Posted 2007-05-12

Salam to all candidates, namely the Moroccans Hajar, Farah and Abdou, and I love you, but beware of enemies, be careful a lot, my greetings to Firas, Farid, Yousra and Donya

arbe algerien Posted 2007-05-12

Hello to all Algeria.

manel Posted 2007-05-12

Firas you don't have the right to stab Jamal in the back it's him who deserves, because in judgment feelings have to be overlooked.

Abdul Posted 2007-05-12

Hi Star academy Mughreb. I watched the prime last night and was very disappointed by what happened to Jamal. I think Jamal was very unlucky and he was under conspiracy attack to kik him out of Star academy. I think Jamal has very good voice and he is better than many others who are still in the academy. I can confirm that I have lost interest to watch the programe any more and I am certain many others have the same view.

مروى Posted 2007-05-12

I like Yousra and Firas, I want Dounia to leave because she didn't sing well, Firas you're so bad because you voted for Dounia and You Yousra

داد Posted 2007-06-09

I'm very fond of the Moroccan star Hajar

رضوان Posted 2007-06-09

Firstly, thanks to the respectable Mrs Khadija, the director. I want to tell you something important, you're a very respectable person as well as all other respectable teachers with the exception of Mr Abdelhamid with the strange basket, it's a pity that he humiliated himself, he's selfish and oppressive. And what's his relationship with the academy and what's his role, offer success to those who aren't related to are because they're his fellow citizens meaning that he supports only Tunisians. By the way, I want you to be fair in your judgment. Khairi has left as a result of the treatment of Abdelhamid, Ahmed is an amazing person. All Maghreb people are good, Mrs Khadija you will receive a surprise if Ahmed leaves the star. We inform you that we have decisive proofs behind the departure of Khairi from the Dar because of the basket holder. We ask you to assume administrative issues by yourself. I have a note, everyone in the committee defends only his fellow citizens. And I say again why there's no Libyan teacher? Is this all discrimination? Since you say that it's an Arab Maghreb star academy, why do you speak in a foreign language, you should bring a committee from outside the Arab Maghreb so that they make a fair judgment. Unfortunately this program is viewed by all people in every nation, so why do say that sister? We're all Arab
