Moroccan technical education fails to attract students
2007-01-08
Even though Morocco's labour market increasingly needs graduates with technical skills, few high schools students are studying technical subjects. This is being attributed to poor academic guidance and substandard facilities in schools.
By Sarah Touahri for Magharebia in Rabat -- 08/01/07
![]() [Sarah Touahri] Morocco's education ministry hopes that more students will choose technical subjects. |
Only 5% of all high school pupils in Morocco are studying technical subjects, despite a recommendation by the National Education and Training Charter that at least two-thirds should specialise in technical and scientific subjects.
The country needs more technically and scientifically oriented graduates to meet the demands of the labour market and the burgeoning industrial sector.
Jamal Khellaf, director of school affairs co-ordination and interdisciplinary studies at the Ministry of Education, says that the number of pupils studying technical and vocational subjects is still below what they would like to see. "This year alone we have seen an increase of 1,222 -- but the total is still below what we would like to see," he said.
Technical subjects taught in Moroccan schools cover the basics of electrical, mechanical and civil engineering and their vocational subfields, as well as plastic arts, construction and economics -- all grouped under "technical education" by the education ministry.
Economics teacher Mohamed Mabrouki thinks there is an imbalance between the ranges of subjects taught in technical and post-secondary colleges. He is not surprised that pupils are avoiding technical subjects, in view of the problems they have been experiencing: substandard dormitory facilities, inadequate water supply, electricity, bathroom and kitchen facilities. He also stresses that the syllabuses taught do not address the needs of the labour market.
According to officials in the education ministry, the main reason students are shunning technical subjects is poor academic guidance. Many students are given poor advice or none at all, so their choices are not knowledge based.
Khellaf believes Morocco needs more innovative teaching and more people qualified in technical disciplines. Despite efforts being made by the government, "things are not going as well at the moment as we had hoped," he told Magharebia. Schools must be willing to respond to their environment if they are to attract more pupils and address the needs of the labour market, he says
The ministry’s 2005-2009 plan includes increasing accommodation capacity, providing teaching support, widening the opportunities for high-school technical graduates and forming new partnerships with the industrial sector.
However, it will only be able to achieve this target if it rehabilitates existing schools, builds more technical facilities and ensures that all schools have classes specifically for pupils studying industrial technology.

Nobody wants to follow these courses, they’re so disastrous. I personally had to bear the brunt of them. I chose Electronics as optional course. Only the best from the college were allowed to follow these optional courses. When I did it, in 1989, only 4 or 5 classes existed in the whole country, gathering together the best students all over the kingdom. And when we got graduate, nothing. No proposal. Even with a magna cum laude, I couldn’t get into any university : non prep, no university of medicine, no university of pharmacy, no university of architecture... We just had the opportunity to get into some universities (PC optional courses, not even MP). I had the chance to go to France, and there I followed prep courses, and then engineering studies. It’s a shame that the best Moroccan students have as only choice one university or going away. The Ministry of Education should just think about post-graduate studies before creating very specific courses. Whatever, those who choose these so specific courses should be aware of what their future will actually look like. This is the goal of my comment.

I'm a student in the scientific branch and I have changed my orientation to sciences and technologies of electricty, I hope that the ministry of education will give a priority to technical branches and develop the mathematical and physical subjects in this field as is the case for the Mathematical sciences. Thank you
fourrier Posted 2007-05-25
I'm a student in the common branch, I want a reply to my question is there a technical mathematical branch in Morocco, if not I ask the ministry of education to open this branch through technical branches such as sciences and electrictity techniques and that it'll be qualifying like mathematical sciences
moha Posted 2007-07-04
Technical subjects can work if only these students will be given support as integration and money after their graduation to get experience or start a small business
moha Posted 2007-07-06
If you live in morocco where the education is free try to get a baca math-physic highscools ,then you will have 4 more years in the university for a bachlor's degree in math and it's the only deploma I believe accepted anywhere in the world from morocco with it you can work anywhere you will have an opportunity for medical school ,computer science and more, but you have to study hard there is nothing called technical mathematical branch anywhere. mathematics is considered as vitamin for other technical subject it help complete the work like in physics ,electronics or mecanics and more .math is a pure branch and keep in mind no math no future good luck .

I'm a young girl who got the baccalaureate this year in electronics, I think that the study of technical subjects is oriented to the sons of rich people as it's a subject requiring a lot of money.

Salam. In view of the changes of curricula and introduction of new fields and removal of others at school, in the opinion of the pupil, it was a maze for them and the drop in the number of students taking the baccalaureate is the result of this policy adopted by the ministry of education. As to orientation, the pupil is in a quasi mess and with the increasing number of fields, they have become valueless…And this is, unfortunately, what I am enduring as I study plastic arts, I wanted to consult with the orientation coach but he didn’t provide me any useful information and didn’t guide me to go to special schools of plastic arts… This was caused by the ministry of education and useless branches for the track of the student in going forward towards attaining the goal…The question which persists is does the ministry of national education have programmes to reform these gaps and make good educational product rivalling other Arab and European countries??? Salam.

I hope that the officials responsible for technical education in Morocco will make a concerted effort to improve students' abilities to meet the requirements of the job market and the developing industrial sector.
كمال أمخلاو Posted 2008-01-31
I study at the first year of secondary education electric sciences and technologies, even if this branch is scientific; it is limited to literary subjects. The coefficient of engineering sciences is 2 transmission, ADC 3 and ATC 3. The ministry of national education should increase its coefficient and eliminate literary subjects.

The problem of language should be solved at university because students find problems there since they did not master it during previous years.

What can I do after the baccalaureate, particularly as I am good at physics and mathematics? One of my relatives advised me to specialize in MPI in one of the universities in Morocco and after two years go to France to continue my studies in engineering. Please help me.

I just want to ask you: what are the conditions to access the preparatory classes after the baccalaureate, and is there anything new in these conditions after the introduction of the branches of physics and natural sciences? Please inform me. May God reward you.

How can we only talk of technical branches and future in that without Islamic sharia?

محمد احمد Posted 2008-04-26
Salam, I am a student in the common branch, science. Generally I say that your confusion is a result of the policy of the state so that the sons of the Moroccan society especially the poor don’t make any progress and that those who have high posts keep their control. The simplest example is that all the courses are in Arabic in secondary and at university they are in French. What can we do? I think that the ministry of education doesn’t deserve the word of “training senior officers and scientific research”. Education in Morocco is one of the lowest and basest education systems in the world.

Peace and mercy of God upon you. I am a student in the common branch, literature. I want to know something: why do such branches exist? Is there no private or public institute or school which could accept such a branch? In my opinion, they should eliminate this branch because students who pass in this branch find no school to receive them except the faculty of torture and human concerns and the faculty of trouble which they don’t find. Salam…

hala Posted 2008-06-01
I think that education in Morocco still faces big problems from the lack of harmony in the curricula with educational stages which led to a flaw in the educational system in Morocco. We notice that there are branches without any horizons, and despite that, they accept access to them by the ministry. Accessing them is even encouraged in order to delude the Moroccan students and this prevents them from getting graduate degrees in developed fields. I hope that the competent ministry will reconsider its policies which will only lead Morocco to ruin and deterioration instead of looking for development and progress and trying to reform the Moroccan educational system with its unlimited flaws. Thank you.

salim Posted 2008-08-11
Honestly, our education system is poorly oriented. This should be the primary interest of our leaders. I got my Bac in 1997 and I immediately went to work. After three years, in 2000, I asked to register at the university in order to continue my studies. They refused because of my Bac being old. I do not know how my Bac could be old; it was only three years. No, I am finding it difficult to get my bearings.

Hi everybody, I am in my final year of bac studies in electrical engineering. This article well explains the situation and suffering of us students of technical instruction. As for me, I got lucky: my high school is well equipped as far as materials go and, praise God, the teachers are high quality. However, our problem is that we need a minister to ensure that we have a syllabus containing a summary of our lessons, exercises and so on and corresponds to our needs just like all the other study materials do. I hope that this will be resolved as soon as possible.

Technical education requires first infrastructures, implementation tools, machines especially informatics. There should also be graduate studies in the field as well as job opportunities. There are educational institutes who have a lack in reading books about some things and this hurdles good learning of the students. Salam. A student from 2STE
ste Posted 2009-02-08
I am a student in the technical electricity branch in the baccalaureate. My advice to all pupils is not to choose this branch. Everyone who chooses it is complaining about it for many considerations. The first thing is the remoteness of the high schools. The second thing is overloading the programme of the student with other subjects in addition to the main ones. Why do we have to study philosophy? It will not help us in anything after the baccalaureate. We study 9 hours in the engineering sciences. Curricula have to be reviewed anew and…For debate.
panglos Posted 2009-02-13
By God, the problem of orientations was and is still dividing us. We notice that the ministry has classified people and branches at school. It has prepared for every speciality a curriculum and a programme which meets its aspirations and the aspirations of the educational sector in Morocco in general. But in other words, the infrastructure was built but the training workshop is still postponed. What we deduce from what we notice that the institutes and schools are not ready to welcome students in a particular speciality for students in scientific branches and this has become a criterion in such choices, the speciality is no longer considered in orientation. Honestly, the orientation system in Morocco (should be thoroughly reformed) it lacks organisation. More to follow.

Salam alikum. This year is featured by the graduation of the first promotion in the final year of the baccalaureate in the new pedagogical structure. Moreover, this raises the question about the usefulness of the technological common trunk which includes the commercial and industrial trunks. It is a wasted year since the content of engineering sciences are based on the industrial aspect and neglect the commercial side. Therefore, the experience of the technological common trunk is a failure 100% if they are not separated or an engineering sciences is set up.

Yes, the only goal of the ministry of education or rather the ministry of rubbish is to encourage school dropout. I ask you by God, is our programme not very difficult? I talk about students of sciences whether physics, mathematics or technical. The only thing done by the ministry was build schools, appoint teachers, and adopt a very difficult programme so that average pupils fail in their studies. It doesn't want to be blamed. We hear in the news that it fights school dropout, but if we think a little we find quite the opposite. I ask God to grant me and all Moroccans success, amen.

I wonder about the reasons which made the ministry of national education harden studies in this field in recent years. It has also made it socialist.
KAWTAR HANAFI Posted 2009-06-18

Praise be to God. Peace and prayer be upon the last messenger. It is very sorry not to have school which accept students who have only a pass without distinction. This is because there are many problems facing students including sickness, confusion or family problems which doesn't allow the student to prepare well for the exam. I hope that the state finds solutions to this problem. Thank you very much. Salam.
hiba Posted 2009-06-19
Never mind dear, be patient.

Salam alikum. Praise be to God. Scientific branches have good horizons after the baccalaureate. Guiding is often in their favour. However, in art branches they haven't received during one year of study a single guide in their classes. Guiding is very weak.

I am a young girl in Houara, Chefchaouni High school. I study economics and management. This branch is introduced for the first year in the school. We the pupils are hard-working but the problem is with teachers. They don't teach us well and always cut down our scores for idle reasons. Their attitude to us is not good. They treat us like their enemies. I ask them to reconsider their attitude.
أحلام Posted 2009-07-02
I want you to give me a solution. Do I choose life and earth branch or physics. I am inclined to life and earth sciences but it is very difficult. What should I do to be good in these two subjects? Please reply.
ملاك Posted 2009-07-02
Salam alikum. I am Bouchra from Algeria. I am good in the branch of sciences. They guided me to the branch of technical mathematics though I hate it. If anyone has an idea about this branch, advise me. God assists everyone, God willing. Wish you success in your studies.

I am Kamar from Morocco. I am uncertain. I choose the branch of sciences and electrical technologies. Next year I will move to the second year. Honestly, I am concerned about the subject of the engineer's sciences very much especially transmission. I had a score of 17.50 in the regional exam. But in spite of this I am scared about next year. I ask your advice and guidance. Thank you.
ZINEB Posted 2009-07-04
Please I want to know electrical engineering, may God reward you with good.

Salam. I study in the first year of the baccalaureate economic sciences and management. I want you to tell me whether this branch has a good future so that if I am wrong in my choice I will change it. My score is 14.

Ali from Morocco, I am 17, a student in the baccalaureate physics. Salam alikum my brothers and sisters in Morocco. The learned sleeps on the soil and the ignorant sleeps on silk. Education in Morocco has become a 'farce'. We no longer expect of this country to facilitate for us crossing to developed countries. I still remember the words of a teacher may God not reward those who introduced him to the educational field. He said to a student after a debate “if you have money, welcome. If you don't have it, go to sleep next to your mother'. Here I say for whom the expression 'The teacher nearly became a prophet' was said? He was right in what he said because without money he wouldn't have become a teacher while he is illiterate.

Peace of God be upon you. I am a young girl who studies in the second year of the secondary. I like the subject of Islamic education and want to choose it at university. However my sister tells me that no one succeeds in this subject. Anyone who studies it stays at home without a job. Are there no jobs for this subject which is the basis of the life of Muslims? In turn I hope from the ministry of education to provide jobs especially for brilliant students. I hope this.
awatif Posted 2009-08-11
Salam. I am a student in the high school Al Khawarizmi T.C.S. I chose the subject of economics. I hope to study well and be brilliant. However, most students criticize this subject under the pretext that it has limited horizons. They encourage me to substitute it. I don’t know whether it is a good subject. I had a good score in maths and I am willing to study it. Thank you.
ساااااارة Posted 2009-08-15
I am a student in the third year of the elementary. I chose a scientific branch but I want a technical subject. I had a score of 15.19. I want to change the subject but some tell me the technical branch has limited horizons in comparison with sciences. Is this true? I am confused. Please help me. Thank you.
laila Posted 2009-08-21
Salam. I am a student in the technology department. I think the problem is not just with the curricula and branches. The problem is in subjects. I have studied as a boarding student. Everything is defective. Pupils live there oppressed like illegal immigrants. Where do funds of the state go? Where are scholarships? Boarding students have to spend their own money on food. In addition to money for private lessons. They need a lot of money: extra hours in physics, maths and French. Revision is necessary for those who want to study nowadays, they need a lot of money and much patience. Teachers are discriminatory. This pupil is the son of a teacher, the other is the son of the principal, they study nothing but their future is secured and they get high scores although the pupil is very weak. What will those who study hard, are patient do but get nothing? This is incredible. Morocco is still backward. This is a pity. We need organization. Everyone should begin from himself and reform himself. This is not easy. I have talked a lot, I apologize but this is what I experienced in living one year in a boarding school.

I study in the third year of the elementary. I am confused whether to study sciences and then study mathematical sciences or choose the branch of technology?
hanan Posted 2009-09-19
In Morocco, there aren't many people who study experimental sciences and technology because they are scared about major subjects in these branches. For me, I wanted to study economics but they told me this will be possible after the 5th year. So I did experimental sciences and was very good. Those who want to study, work hard even if they face any difficulties. Blessed Ramadan.
jawad Posted 2009-09-19
The technology branch has many horizons.

Peace be upon the followers of the right path. My name is Walid, and I'm a student in the second year of the baccalaureate, mathematical sciences. I address this advice to students of the lower secondary and common field of sciences. Anyone who chooses this field will never regret it. It will be the best decision they made, as the orientation officer told us once. ("You're on the right path."). Don't listen to the statements of those who overstate the difficulty of this subject. I don't agree with those who say it requires genius. It just needs effort in preparing for exams by doing a lot of practice and good memorisation, because they will have to do similar questions in the exam. The teacher will not test you in Demiati; there are just skills and techniques acquired through practice by doing the simple and the complex. You should of course focus on the course, persevere, not despair and have a spirit of challenge. You can't get the highest grades on the first test, especially with courses of logic, groups and applications. But with perseverance and hard work, nothing is impossible. As the English proverb says, “ Where there's a will, there's a way”.
