New sports channel launched in Morocco, Amazigh language channel to come
2006-09-19
A new public Moroccan sports channel called "Riyadiya" began broadcasting via satellite on 16 September. "Amazighiya", an Amazigh language channel, is expected to begin broadcasts between nine months and one year from now.
By Mawassi Lahcen for Magharebia in Casablanca – 19/09/06
![]() [File] Laraichi believes unknown sports clubs will greatly benefit from "Riyadiya". |
"Riyadiya," a new Moroccan sports channel, began broadcasting on Friday (16 September). The television channel is the fifth public channel to be broadcast via satellite. It comes in a package with Channels One and Two, the Education Channel and the Mohammed VI Holy Qur'an Channel.
Faiçal Laraichi, president and director general of the National Company of Radio and Television, held a press conference in Casablanca when "Riyadiya" was launched. He said a huge investment would have been required to bring the channel to non-digital, terrestrial broadcasting, though noted that since October, Morocco has been in the process of approving terrestrial digital broadcasting techniques to allow terrestrial channels to broadcast with quality similar to that of digital broadcasting via satellite channels. The speaker pointed out that 93 per cent of Moroccans currently receive public channels programming via non-digital, terrestrial broadcasting, while 53 per cent receive digital channels via satellite.
Laraichi indicated "Riyadiya" is designed to be a true reflection of what takes place in Moroccan sports. It could help promote and develop the sports sector by opening up sponsorship and funding possibilities for unknown clubs, which were only appearing on the two public channels once or twice a year.
"Showing these clubs on the 'Riyadiya' channel twice a week will strengthen the interest of investors, because exposure through these clubs will have a distinct impact because of the increased frequencies and opportunities for them to appear on screen," he explained.
The new channel offers a package of assorted programmes for 12 hours a day. The schedule includes11 sports magazines, three discussion and commentary programmes, documentaries, sports history programmes, and non-sports entertainment.
Laraichi mentioned the broadcasting language will be somewhere between Moroccan dialect and modern standard Arabic, while allowing guests to speak the language of their choosing.
Launching "Riyadiya" channel cost around 50m dirhams and a 60m-dirham operating budget for employee wages was allocated for the first year. According to Laraichi, launching the channel would have cost 200m dirhams if it had been launched as a self-standing project. He said the project's funding was provided by the National Company of Radio and Television within its normal budget without government support and that the company relied entirely on its own abilities in the creation of the new channel.
Laraichi will also be launching an Amazigh language channel called "Amazighiya". He denied a quota of time allocated to broadcasting in the Amazigh language existed.
"I personally am against this treatment of Amazigh … The Amazigh channel will be launched in nine months to a year from now," he stated.

Samir Posted 2006-09-20
I consider this piece of news "valuable" for the entire north africa and not just for Morocco, both the "Riyadiya" & "Amazighiya" channels will be a great assets to the entire north african socity; HOWEVER their launch becomes a little too late! especially the "Amazighiya" channel ! Why? the reason being that "Tamazight" the true identity and the true historical language of moroccan and north africans is always the victim in its own land and is always treated as a secondary issue if not the last and indeed not a priority!! I wonder when the Moroccan authorities "wake-up" and start serving their own people!!
amazighnarif Posted 2006-09-20
I concur with samir because Amazigh is North African and nothing else. The Amazigh channel should have been launched a long time ago. From your Moroccan friend in al Hoceima... amazighnarif
lahcen elouaddari Posted 2006-09-21
Morocco has forgotten the Amazigh. Neither television, radio nor anyone else (should forget them). Morocco should write using the Tifinagh language, and not just Arabic, because we are not Arabs.
عادل المغربي Posted 2006-09-21
Morocco didn't and will not forget the Amazigh. For my brother's knowledge, Rights are taken and not given. Is there an association calling for Amazigh? [...] I am amazigh like you and proud of it. But aren't you Arab by identity? You say "we are not Arab", but why are you writing in Arabic, the language of the Qur'an? I am 1000% sure you do not know the Amazigh alphabet. What will amazigh add to Morocco except more backwardness?
nabil Posted 2006-09-22
Al Riyadia is a nice channel
sammy Posted 2006-09-22
I understand that amazigh issue playd a big role in morocco and algeria and not in tunisia, the berber heritage in tunisia is not more than the phoenicians, romans,Greeks, vandals, norman, spanish, arabs, turkish.all of them make the nowadays tunisa, there for no one in Tunisia is waiting for something did not concern us.
amazighnarif=امازيغ ناريف Posted 2006-09-23
To brother Adel from Morocco. First of all we write in Arabic because nobody has taught our ancestors Amazigh...for your question what would Amazigh bring to Morocco? Adding Arabic to Morocco is only half of its independence and a cause of out social economic and political problems. Do you know why? because it is an intruding language! 64% of the population of Morocco speak it...which is why it is only adding confusion and conflict to Morocco. Amazigh on the other hand would be the savior of its identity as all North Africans speak Amazigh... Azul the Moroccan friend in Al Hussima Amazigh Narif

the 70% imazighen join in paying by means of eliktrische account all TV stations RTM1 arabia 2M and maghribia without but a TV station for them
Mohand-achtouk Posted 2006-09-25
I still don't understand why the Moroccan authorities set aside their true and proper Amazigh identities to the detriment of the imported Arab (identity). I also ask myself the question: Are we independent (at least from the linguistic point of view)or are we still under the occupation of pan-Arabists? Why is Amazigh always in second place after a language that is not our own? It will be a long time before an Amazigh TV will have its proper place in Morocco in general, and particularly in North Africa. But one thing is for sure: those who think the Amazigh nation is suffering will one day be suprised, they will regret their contempt, which they have had for a long time towards the Amazigh people in general.
elfilali Posted 2006-09-26
This is true, why the delay in launching an Amazigh TV channel (in Morocco)? It is really terrible for a country to deny its own origines. May God cure you! Say Amen!
Albarnossi Posted 2006-09-26
Moroccans are amazigh .Even who claim to be Arab in Morocco is an amazigh who ignors himself........ Amazigh language will assert internationnaly our moroccan identity and will help Morocco to go forward. Modern classical arabic is a language used by massmedia.Classical arabic( X century) is a deed language used occasionaly only in lithurgy or theology and since 9/11 in terrorist activities............Amazigh is a language used daily by 75 % of Moroccans

MARTIN Posted 2006-09-28
All people from the Maghreb (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Lybia….) should feel much more concerned by the extraordinary and ancestral Amazigh culture than by the Arab one. A television and radio channel in Amazigh language is a legitimate right for people who have for centuries been second-ranked by Arabs using the pretext that Arabic was the original language of the Qur’an (what about Chinese, Russian, Indonesian Muslims, who have nothing to do with Arabic ?). Time has come for you all to speak out for your liberty of speech and demand a television and radio channel, free from all hatred or conflict towards those who say they are "Arabs".
CHAHUT Posted 2006-09-29
I am astonished at either the naivete of the blindness of everyone who asks to use the Amazigh language -- always to the detriment of Arabic, but never French. Why is there such a hatred of Arabic and this complex of colonisation vis a vis French?
حمادة Posted 2006-10-06
a strictly subjective channel!
مريم رضاوي Posted 2006-10-17
Amazigh is not necessary because it is not a language of science. Even the Arabic language is not a language of science. If we want progress we need to look for a more important and developped language without however forgetting this language (Arabic) compeltely as it it our ancestor's language and a decent communication tool amongst us Moroccans.
جواد Posted 2006-10-21
There is a lack of commentators. Thanks
الحسين Posted 2006-10-27
In reply to Adil from Morocco, language does not determine the identity of people. Almost all the peoples of South America speak Spanish, but we can’t call them Spaniards or Europeans; they remain Americans and everyone of them belongs to his country. This applies to the people of North Africa despite the fact that some of them speak Arabic, actually the dialect. We learn Arabic at school as we learn other foreign languages. To sum up, we are Africans, Amazigh and Muslims. Even the Arabic language’ rules and grammar were instituted by Perisans, like Sibaouayhe and Al Gharissi. Thank You and Happy Eid.
انير Posted 2006-10-27
For Meryem show said that neither Arabic nor Amazigh is a language of science. I agree except that Amazigh has been marginalzed and hated and did not receive the same recognition. In any case, it is simple a language of communication for Moroccans who actually speak Moroccan dialect and not Arabic, perhaps most of them speak Amazigh and are entitled to their native tongue!
amine Posted 2006-10-28
When reading some comments, i feel a little worried for interior stability in Morocco!! Who are those people who claim that such or such language was prevailing in Morocco, in northern Africa or elsewhere... Are you creating a controversy that can have very harmful consequences just because of some TV channel??!! Those who claim that Morocco has to provide for its own sons and neglects Amazighs, setting some aside... Stop telling lies, stop telling bullshit!! Morocco has always considered Berbers as real Moroccans, and the issue of their « moroccanity » has never been acute, since it is obvious!! Be we Amazighs or Arabs, we are first and last Moroccans, damn it!!!! So stop telling bullshit, or things will evolve the way they do in Algeria, where Berbers say "I am a Kabylian, not an Algerian"!! Can you imagine one day, some Moroccan berber being asked who he is, and replying "I am Rifi, Soussi or Chelh" !!! This would a catastrophy!!! So bugger off, you are just making a fuss for nothing!! And long live Moroccans!! 3ibad allah!!!!!
انير Posted 2006-11-05
This is a response to Amine's comment. This nonsense will stop when the Amazigh feels that he is like the Arab. How come we have six Arabic channels and when one Amazigh station is suggested we see this heated debate. The Amazigh has rights and was not born for a grocery store only!
عبدالله اسكاون Posted 2006-11-11
Thanks God the dawn of Amazighia has come after ages of darkness. We are happy to see our news anchors airing live shows in our language. It is such a long waited time. I have seen a heated debate amongst you about Amazighia. It is a language with a root and people who take pride in promoting it in TV and the Internet in a world where communications have become like shadows. But why the extremist and favourtism views that seem to be prevalent. We are all humans with the same parents. The Prophet of humanity has said "there is no favouritsim between an arab or no arab exept how fearful of the Lord they are" and he also said "Leave it [racial wars] it is unpleasant". Those who trigger such a war are enemies of Islam and stability witnessed by Morocco. They want to create a racial conflict in Morocco as they have done in other nations. I do not see a need for such a conflict considering that we are one people under one king, religion and school of thought which is enough for our unity. Langauge and culture remain the right of every citizen to practice. I am a proud Muslim and a proud Amazigh and a believer if the message of the great Prophet of mankind who has been sent as a mercy to the worlds. We have the right to promote Amazigh which likely witnessed years of progress on the Internet and mass media and is surely moving forward for the better. I respect all Amazigh and Arabs. Please unite and abandon disperson and work toward building a better world and know that there are people who see Morocco as a role model for progress and democracy. Please do not allow the enemies of the country to succeed in their schems

In sum, I agree 100% with Mr. Abddellah Askawi. Specifically we as Amazigh we have the right to a TV channel in our language. I will be happy to see my father and mother watch a show that they know and understand. It is painful to see one'es parents, in the 21 century, sticking their ears to the radio because that's their only source of entertainment in their language. TV is incomprehensible to them. This is not my family's problem. It is that of all Amazigh. Please give us an Amazigh TV channel ASAP

I am and will be Amazigh. We have the right to a TV channel according to the Constitution. We have great hope in our King Mohamed VI may the Lord Grant him success against his enemies!
العريشى Posted 2006-12-21
If there was logic, Moroccans would have had an Amazigh speaking satellite channel given that more than 80% of the Moroccan population don’t know Arabic. And Morocco is ranked on top in the world at the level of illiteracy. How can Morocco eradicate this illiteracy while it doesn’t communicate with the majority of its population, no media, no courts and no justice to communicate with the Amazigh so that he protects his rights? Please understand me. We aren’t racists but we defend our rights.

Praise be to God, the dawn of the Amazigh has emerged after generations in darkness. We will be happy to see our Amazigh presenters, and how numerous they are, broadcast their live programs. It’s a moment we’ve been longing for with impatience and eagerness. My brothers, I've seen a fruitless debate rising among you on the issue of Tamazight, it’s a language that has its people, and they’ve the right to disseminate it and feel their presence on TV and the internet, in a world where telecommunications are nearly fantastic. But when we are very enthusiastic about fanaticism, and prefer one type of person over another... we’re all human beings from one mother and one father. The Prophet, peace and prayer be upon him, who is the messenger of the nation and its mercy, said (There’s no difference between an Arab and a foreigner, only in piety of God). Those who instigate such passions are the enemies of Islam and enemies of current stability in Morocco. They want to create discord between different sects of Moroccan society as they have in many nations. I don’t see any justification to all this, as we’re all Moroccans under one nation, one Islam, and one doctrine. Thank God this is enough for us as a road to union. Then the issue of language and culture is a right of the citizen, and he’s free in its practice. I’m an Amazigh person, I’m proud of my Amazigh origin and I’m proud of my Islam. I believe in the Prophet of the Arabic nation, the messenger of mercy sent by God to all human beings. We have the right to push the wheel of Amazigh to emerge and shine. God has wished that recent years be a blessing to the Amazigh culture to appear, it's now on the internet, magazines, newspapers and even in public schools. it's now progressing for the better. With my warmest greetings to all free Amazigh people and all free Arabs. We should join hands for the better in order to build the future, building Morocco and its generations and not destroying it. Our discord will drive us to destruction and ruin. As you know, the enemies of Morocco bite down on these passions and fanaticism with their molars and try to stir it between people. Don’t forget that inside Morocco there are supporters of these people who see Morocco and its democracy as an example and envy us for it. So don’t inadvertently give them support to achieve their goals. salam alaikoum.

If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart"arabic is a language by force and soon or later Tamazight will be our official language,no doubt about it.you don't tell us what to do it's our land ,all amazigh are united by language ,faite, blood and land.but the worse is being sunis or sheeeay but rifi ,soussi or chelh ..are united in the name of tamzgua(north africa).people are starving to death in their home land .I have seen many families in atlass mountains selling their land to the arab for the price of a carpet because they have to . enough is enough

Berbers call themselves 'Imazighen' (Free), plural of 'Amazigh'. They call the Maghreb 'Tamazgha', or Land of the Imazighen The Moroccan government wants Tamazight taught in all schools within 10 years. It is recognised as a national language in Mali and Niger. In 2003 the Algerian authorities also made Tamazight a national language. But Berbers there want it to have equal status, as an 'official language'. but for you mrs DIMA I beleive you have never been in school go back and learn history ,we did save your ass you are so lucky today to be hiden like a frog,

To all those who pretend that Amazigh people live under the protection of Arabs, I say: go back to the history of the Greater Maghreb and you’ll see that you are mistaken. If they had not made a sacrifice in defense for this region, it would have been a story of the past. As to the Arab conquest of the region, it was under the pretext of Islam. Muslims are brothers, we agree with that because we’re Muslims but we don’t accept the colonization of our land under the pretext of Islam. There are many countries, which aren’t Arab, and were successful in their religion better than Arabs themselves.

Arriyadia channel includes names that aren't known in the Moroccan sports field, such as the presenter of the program 'Moustawdaa' who knows nothing about football. He was a dentist and is also a broker of players and games. I wish that Mr El Alami was aware of that and that he gets rid of this person who considers himself the personal advisor of El Alami and uses the channel as a bridge through which he advertises his newspaper and by inviting some directors who head some commercial enterprises and institutes.

Greetings. I’m Amazigh, my parents are Amazigh. Therefore, the world should know that the Arab Maghreb is Amzigh. Saying that Moroccans are Arabs are just words by Arabs in Morocco who are of Yemeni origin. Therefore, they say that they brought Islam to Morocco but this isn’t Islam, this is colonisation. But we Amazigh people hold on to Islam more than Arabs, there’s much to say about Amazigh people.

My opinion as a Chaoui of the people of Aouras the valiant who defeated the Atlantic Alliance, I am proud of the Arabism of Islam, the Arabism of the holy Qur'an and the Arabism of our master Mohamed peace and prayer be upon him. I am not concerned about the Arabism of pre-Islam and the fanatic Tamazight which was exploited by the cultural occupation after its military defeats in North Africa. What we see today is the beginning of a serious conflict which will achieve for the occupation what it was unable to achieve by itself. Oh Lord unite our ranks.

We are proud of this media awakening in the beloved kingdom with the foundation of a sports channel which rivals the major channels in live transmission of important sport events, the last of which was the African Cup. The satellite channel had a strong presence, especially in the Middle East. It had fans from different nationalities especially Egypt and Sudan in addition to Arab communities in the sisterly kingdom of Saudi Arabia. I have experienced this demand on Al Maghribia Arriyadia in following the championship of Accra. This was a source of pride among my colleagues of different nationalities who were gathered while living abroad. I wish the channel a great continuation, an excellent performance and a production rivalling the world's channels.

I have noticed on this nice forum that there some kind of racism between the members. Someone writes in the name of his contribution in Amazighi and hates Arabs, someone else from the Rif talks about the Rif as if it were part of the El Dorado and not from Morocco. The Arab says that Arabic is the language of the Qur’an and if don’t accept it, it is as if you don’t accept Islam. I will say to members in my short message that according to what we studied in history when we were young, Mazegh is the first person who lived in Morocco and he immigrated from Yemen. His sons are Amazighs. They were the first to settle in Morocco. But he was never their king. Arabs came with Islam and Amazighs instituted them as their kings and claimed allegiance to them in order to spread Islam so that the territory of the Moroccan State extends with time and different races from different parts come to it and it becomes a mixture of people. For that reason, Morocco was a mixed nation; so even if you were Amazigh, there is Arab or Sahraoui blood running in your veins. Your mother, sister, or grandmother is Arab. So there is certainly Arab blood in you. All these races have formed the Moroccan Muslim blood. Therefore, there is no need for sensitivities. We are all Muslims whether Arabs or Amazighs. There is no difference between Arabs or foreigners except by faith so that our enemies don’t find gaps in our societies to infiltrate and we stay in our countries safe in peace and security. Peace, mercy and blessings of God upon you.

There is a certain Amazigh population in the Southern Mediterranean but to say that there are only Amazigh is absurd and propagandistic. Furthermore, shouldn't they embrace their culture, which is Arabic and Mediterranean? By the way, Mauritania is not part of the Maghreb nor is it part of North Africa. It used to be known as French West Africa for a reason, and is only included in the definition by world organizations for political reasons, as they wish to burden North Africa with issues that they would rather not deal with. Again, Mauritania is a sUb-saharan country and NOT A MAGHREBIAN OR NORTH AFRICAN COUNTRY!

Salam, do you know, ignorant, that Amazigh were the first who came to Morocco and North Africa. Review history. Greetings to Amazigh people.

What's right is right, no matter how long it takes. Don't be sad, Amazigh are coming. History is repeating itself.

(long live Amazigh). There is no difference between Arabs, foreigners, Amazigh, white, black, red or yellow except in faith. You can find this in the United States but not Arab or Islamic lands, for example Barack Obama, God bless freedom)???

Do you know that the law of the general of the Moroccan football federation bans players from HUSA of Agadir to join the national team just because they are Amazigh? Do you know that when HUSA was the champion of Morocco for two successive year was invited to participate in a tournament organized by a Saudi man in Fès with the participation of teams from Casablanca, Rabat and Fès but the federation and the general refused the participation of HUSA of Agadir because they are Amazigh? Do you know that Arab nationalists in the radio and TV refuse to build a suitable stadium in Agadir and support building more in Fès? Do you know that millions are spent on Fès teams from the funds of the people? Do you know that the media is still a megaphone for free advertising of Fès? Do you know that not a single day elapses without hearing news from Fès or something belonging to it?
