New film addresses 1960s Jewish exodus from Morocco

2006-08-27

Moroccan director Hassan Benjelloun has just finished shooting his latest film "Al-Hana" (The Bar), which tells the story of Moroccan Jews' immigration to Israel in the 1960s and the subsequent effects on non-Jewish residents. Actor Rabie Kati talked to Magharebia about his role in the project.

By Imane Balhaj for Magharebia in Casablanca – 27/08/06

[File] Moroccan Jews at the Transit Camp Grand Arenas, near Marseilles, France, from where they proceeded to Israel, 1949.

"Al-Hana" (The Bar), which tells the story of Moroccan Jews' immigration to Israel in the 1960s after Moroccan independence and the subsequent effects on non-Jewish residents, will be released at the beginning of 2007. Even though director Hassan Benjelloun says the film does not carry a specific message, it does show that Jews and Muslims have created one culture within a single society. While the film shows great numbers of Jews leaving Abi Al-Ja'd, others such as Schlomo refuses to close his business and travel with the others because he feels rooted in Morocco.

Young acting star Rabie Kati told Magharebia working with director Benjelloun was "like the discovery of a director to an actor and an actor to a director". Al-Qati has previously appeared in "Abu Al-Janna" and a number of Syrian and Egyptian Arab television series. He talked to Magharebia about "Al-Hana".

Magharebia: Tell us about your role in "Al-Hana"

Rabie Kati: I play the role of Hassan, who has a strong relationship with a Moroccan Jewish family living in the town of Abi Al-Ja'd. He is really close to the family patriarch Schlomo, a neighbour who Hassan substitutes for the father he lost. Hassan also falls in love with Schlomo's daughter, who works in her father's bar. The film depicts the largest immigration in Moroccan history in the 20th century, the immigration of Jews to Israel. It primarily tells of the effect in human terms, which is still being endured by the people of Abi Al-Ja'd. After bonds of brotherhood and co-existence had linked them, around 200,000 Jews disappeared overnight.

Magharebia: How did you feel working in a film alongside Moroccan Jews?

Kati: As a human, I did not feel any differently. We were forming a team of Moroccan actors, so religious affiliations did not matter. There was understanding and deep sensitivity. None of us, from the director right down to the very last actor, whether Jewish or Muslim, wanted to deliver any particular message. We wanted to play roles based on the historical reality of life in Morocco, which saw the biggest immigration of Jews to Israel, and the greatest crime committed against the Moroccan Jews, who set off without knowing what awaited them. This immigration was like a journey to a mirage.

Magharebia: Were you happy with your role?

Kati: Yes. Despite my being a beginner and early on in my career, I have from the onset been able to choose roles that I am comfortable with. "Al-Hana" is based on an intelligently-written script and includes good actors. Everyone works as a team with technicians and assistants. I believe the final product will delight Moroccan audiences.

Peace be upon you! I love Rabiaa El Kati for the sake of God. All rising generations should be proud of him because is the artist, the friend and the human being. I know him closely and I know his pride in his Arab, religion and language roots. His language is Arabic that we should all be proud of, study and promote in order to save its great heritage. We should not consider ourselves inferior to other nations like Europe whose language were divided into many languages. Ours, thanks God, has remained unified over the years. I love you very much and I wish you all the success in your future trials. Intern journalist Givara

Who are you...? Me...?! I'm the one who comes from the travel of the days...!

دحى حورية Posted 2007-04-04

Salam Alaikoum, acting is something great, I'm fond of it, what I don't appreciate is the role of Moroccan actresses that most of the time breaches morals, for example Amal who did the role of Aicha in the film Lala Fatima was great, unfortunately she acted recently in a way I wasn't expecting. And for you my brother Rabiaa, I wish you a good career, thanks.

Hello Rabie, My name is Majdouline. I am your cousin. Keep up the good luck.

mounir el amari de kassba tadla Posted 2007-06-12

To begin with, after reading all comments on the list I noticed that there are fans of Rabia El Kati, and one opinion bearing the name of 'Sefana' which says "I'm not a fan of Rabia El Kati", I say to its writer that Rabia El Kati is a great artist and doesn't need your admiration from this platform as much as he needs your encouragement. This budding artist doesn't have 60 films, to make do such a declaration, he only has a few films but they have their place in Moroccan cinema... I have previously written my comment, and here I am writing it again, I also want to say again that the great artist has a request, it's that someone design a personal website to introduce this young artist from Taza, who acted in the role of the dignified young man in many films, I believe that his personality is really dignified and noble as I met him during for days while shooting one of his films in a bar, some of its scenes were taken in Abi Jaad, I also took with him a memorial picture... I will conclude by thanking all those who contributed their comments, including some of his relatives.

Honestly, I don’t know from where to start my discussion. One finds it difficult to choose the right words expressing the greatness of this artist who has all the qualities of sublime and constructive are. Even if the list of his works are limited, but it doesn’t reflect in a clear way the merit and qualities of this emerging young man who always tries to do works that raise the Arab nation to the level of distinction and elevation. All his workers is a sincere call for restoring the pride and dignity of the Arab citizen in addition to his historic and religious films including the Moroccan films. I will sum up by saying that, however long it takes, your merit of respect and esteem won’t be satisfied, Rabie. I hope from God to help you in your artistic career and personal life, grants you His rewards of success with the will of God. Your admirer Radoua from Kenitra. I hope that you will read my simple comment and that you like my style, to be honest with you, this is the first time I write to someone in Arabic because I feel that you are have a penchant to this language which is authentic in itself. As far as I am concerned , bless brother Rabie. I am also one of your fans. Where is the love of yesterday, oh spoiled ones? Glory be to God Who make changes but doesn’t change. Love in the past surged from the heart. These days it has moved down to the stomach. If man loved a woman, he would sacrifice everything to marry her. But today, if a man loves a woman, she sacrifices everything so that he covers her and doesn't disclose her love. Love used to reach the level of madness. But today, love is considered madness. Love is for teenagers. When a woman fell in love, this was apparent in her eyes and face.

Peace be upon the followers of the right path. Oh Lord assist all artists if they fear God in their films and serials. Oh Lord shake them and destroy them if they aren't. The preacher Abderahmane.

aicha kenitra Posted 2009-05-06

I will never forget the day I met Rabie in Kenitra. I love you! I have your telephone number and I would love to talk to you sometime.

Gandolfo Hanane Posted 2009-05-11

No joke! Zama, do you love this actor for everything he has done, or is it because he has looks that could kill? Personally, as a French Casablancan, I will say it loud and clear: this guy is super. If he ever comes to the Côte d'Azur, then I hope he tells us about it so we can get a photograph with him and I can make him part of my vacation. I am as brown-haired and beautiful as he is. :) Come on, my Moroccan friends! Calm down and do not get angry; I just said what I was thinking openly! –Kisses everyone!

hania Posted 2009-05-11

On 11 May 2009 I saw him in the centre of town when I was with my girlfriends he was very nice. Bravo Rabie! Keep up the good work! Bless you! –Hania

kawtar Posted 2009-05-31

I wish you good luck in your artistic career, one of your best fans.

kawtar Posted 2009-06-05

I die for you, that's all. You have impressed all the people.

sarah Posted 2009-06-07

I think that this was just a simple young Moroccan who found his career in art because of a lack of education. He does not deserve all this. Moreover, I think he is quite fake. On the other hand, Rashid el Wali is a real artist. To tell the truth, he is quite handsome. Good luck, everyone!

كسندرا Posted 2009-06-28

Anything I might write won't reduce my sorrow for losing the dearest thing in this universe. I wish you success in your life Cassandra.

rabie kati Posted 2009-08-31

I wish everyone a happy Ramadan! I miss you all, my dear fans! I would like to tell you that my latest film out in the theatres. It is an Italian-American film titled "Smile." It was directed by Francesco Gasperoni. I play a very important role in this film: the hunter. The film came out in Italy's theatres on 28 August 2009. You can see the film preview on YouTube. Search "Trailer Smile Italiano". Do not miss it. See you soon, my dear friends. -Rabie Kati

souad de kasba tadla Posted 2009-09-03

Copied : “Maroc art: what is the role which can be proposed to you and you will reject it? El Kati: of course there are red lines which I have to define and I won't accept the role which exceed them. This emanates from my artistic conviction as an actor. For example, I will refuse any rile that distorts the image of Islam or harms national sanctities or our Arabism”...yes a great personality...

souad de kasba tadla Posted 2009-09-05

Thank you Rabie for your nice interest in your fans.

el qati Posted 2009-10-08
