Châabi music master Amar Ezzahi keeps low profile

2005-12-29

For lovers of Algerian popular music, Amar Ezzahi is a living legend. Despite his status as the undisputed master of the genre, he remains far from the limelight by not making public appearances and refusing to make himself available to the media.

By Nazim Fethi for Magharebia in Algiers – 29/12/05

[File] Ezzahi only plays at family gatherings.

Algerian Amar Ezzahi, a brilliant writer and interpreter of châabi (Algerian popular music), whose real name is Amar Aït Zaï, was born on January 1941 in Tizi-Ouzou. He became involved with the genre in 1963 after meeting Sheik Lahlou and Mohammed Brahimi, known as Sheik Kebaili. They encouraged him, sent him ancient qacidate (poems), and demonstrated the rhythm in which the texts were sung. Ezzahi was then able to teach himself through practice.

Ezzahi's first recording was in 1968. The modest, reserved and quiet man often hung out at El Kawakib, a café in the Kasbah of Algiers. After being one of the most brilliant châabi artists in the 1970s, Ezzahi practically disappeared from the music scene after 1980, turning up only for family celebrations. He reappeared 10 February 1987 at a recital at a major venue in Algiers, only to disappear once more.

Ezzahi has not made any public appearance since, and has rarely gone to El Kawabib since 2000 due to health problems. The most popular and gifted singer of his generation is now considered a veritable enigma in the music world. Completely withdrawn from the media circuit for some years, Ezzahi leaves his many admirers hungering for more.

The generous man, who is intolerant of worldliness and excess, has made châabi his reason for living. While he refuses to appear before large audiences, he still finds immense pleasure in intimate family gatherings because, "singing in front of a little audience of friends is one of the greatest feelings in the world".

Amar Ezzahi recorded his only cassette in 1982, forcing admirers to delve into personal recordings from family celebrations in the 1970s or hunt for his old records.

Ezzahi's talent is improvisation

Ezzahi's talent is improvisation, being able to change style with disconcerting ease. Having lost both his parents, Ezzahi lived for a long time with an aunt. She died a few years ago, leaving Ezzahi with the solitude he had always been seeking.

Consequently, Ezzahi has shunned the spotlight and described himself as being on the side of humble folk. He has held many events for common people with modest incomes. His fans follow him to family celebrations, and record his music, which they copy and sell by the thousands.

Since the death of El Hadj Mohamed El Anka, known as "The Cardinal", Ezzahi has been widely regarded as his successor in a line of grand masters of châabi, despite his media avoidance and strong competition from El Anka's pupils.

casbaoui Posted 2007-06-18

Good evening dear friends, I went through all the messages- for the most part in praise— on the Cheikh. (Cheikh spelled with a capital C for Ammar Ezzahi.) It is true that he is the uncontested master, and it is easy for me to say even more; he alone knows the art of the poetry he sings and music he improvises at each of his parties. His voice bewitches the listener. He knows exactly how to interpret each qasida depending on the audience. Such is a real artist. God willing, may the Lord give him a long life. I hope that someone will be able to convince him to sing in a great hall such as the Dzlle Ibn Khaldou or the Theatre de Verdure. It is up to the Minister of Culture to do the work for this in recognition of someone who has never before asked for anything. This is a bit of the history of el-Anka, honoured after his death. This man has a very dignified and strong personality. That is why he refuses everything (even a prize of 500.00 dinars) in saying that he did not deserve it because he didn't work for it. Cheikh Ammar has moved me, not so much by pity but by principal. Long live the last of our monuments. Brothers forever.

I am a giant fan of the ^music^ master Amimar. I respect and love him so much. God protect you sheikh. I had the priveledge to have him sing at my marriage in 2001. It was an unforgettable moment. The first thing I did when I got back home was to go and greet him. His song “Essaa” is missing in my modest collection. It starts like this: “Ya saa yahdik douri, rekasek ouechbih atel, telfoulou lechral.” Thank ahead of time. I am really looking forward to your email.

sofiane Posted 2007-06-30

Hello Saghar, I have a problem: I am afraid that Châabi is going to disappear with the evolution of music in the world. It is true that it is traditional music, but, honestly, I know of no other music which speaks so well of love. No one has managed to translate it, resulting from the ignorance of classical Arabic. (did you understand storm faces?) However, we need to try. (Get motivated, God bless you) The important thing is to multiply the poetry that is accompanied by explanation and "translation", particularly the charates of Ezzahi Llah ykhalikoum

mahrez Posted 2007-07-01

Amar is the great master of Chabbi, like Zidane is to football, and Einstein and Mozart. Above all else it is his manner of expression that gives me goose bumps and shivers down my neck; it is his nostalgia for Algeria. Since 2000, I have been following him wherever he goes. I help out with all his celebration and, believe me, it is a real pleasure. His talent comes from some of the hardships he has endured in his life. I hope that he will do Nissf Edine before he passes on. There is but one woman who made such an artist of him. -Boudjema, age 23, from Ben Knoun, Algiers

It's a shame that we can find no documentation about him apart from a few existing sites. Anyway, may God let them continue, grant long life to Ezzahi and Chaabi music, salam alaikoum.

To me, Ezzahi personifies the soul of Chaabi—simplicity, generosity and the love of the art.

ben msayeb Posted 2007-10-28

Hello, Cheikh Ammar Ezzahi is, simply put, a gift from God. It is beyond extraordinary that someone masters such an art with such skilled style and technique. Personally, I think that Ezzahi does not belong to our generation; his place is before Zeriabe and Mawsili. He is a genius in his genre. I will go as far as to say what the rest of the world dares not to, though it is still deep down in their hearts: I confirm upon him the status of moving beyond Al Anka. He revolutionized the style of Chaabi when all other artists from his generation never dared to do anything besides Al Anka and did nothing to create a new style. Ezzahi, our Cheikh, you are a legend. –Good bye

saidou Posted 2007-11-01

I would say that he is indeed a great icon of châabi music. What is more, he is a great artist who still hides much of his talent, which I consider magical and splendid to listen too. He is so attentive and compassionate. Both his personality and the pains he takes in making his uplifting songs bring such joy to any soul that is sensitive to his interpretations. I hope to find through you, my friends—If you permit me to so call you, the same sentiments for music, lyrics and poetry, such that we may share them. Hello to all the fans of Ezzahi. I just want to say a very big thank you to him. He is the brother of my maternal grandmother, Ellah Yerhamna. Just like you, I am a fan of chaabi, El Haj, Guerouabi, Rahimahoumou Ellah, Boujdemaa and, most especially, the modest, reserved, great stand-alone, Amar Ezzahi, whom I unfortunately only know through my grandmother and her music. This artist has sacrificed his life for chaabi. I am positive that although I have never had the chance to meet him, I still know him: his music makes me forget all my worries. I have learned that he was very sick and even hospitalised. I ask only one thing: May God bless him with health. Ezzahi is a rare pearl. I love his simplicity. I adore him and I do not think I am alone. Long live Ezzahi and all of his fans!

sofiane Posted 2008-03-28

Ezzahi is the star of pop. He will forever be etched into Algeria's memory. He is noted throughout the world! His voice is unique. God bless the sheikh, we will never forget you.

kadour Posted 2008-03-31

I like Amar Ezzahi.

benzai Posted 2008-04-02

Hi Everybody, Like you said, we are a single family. We are Algerians, as we all love our Sheikh. There you have it. I heard one of our master’s songs, “Anna Andi Kelb”, and I have been looking for it ever since. How can I find the CD or cassette or, jz... I am asking all of you, fans of Ezzahi, if you can let me have them. Thank you, sheik, zehitna, and, to let you know, I sing well. Aziz Azahi

lamia Posted 2008-04-02

I love you, sheikh. You are great.

TAHAR Posted 2008-04-02

God willing, the maestro is incontestably the best in the heavens! I met him once at a t’hara celebration. He shook my hand. I swear to you that he almost made me faint. I dream of the day he sings to us in Kabyle.

I love Amar Ezzahi.

zinou"belcourt" Posted 2008-04-18

Amimer is the best artist ever, since the creation of the universe to the end of the world. That is how it has to be because he can do anything except become Ezzahi. That is the only thing that is impossible in this world. Those who don't love Amimer don't love anything.

sadi Posted 2008-04-24

I am so in love with our châabi master Amar Ezzahi. May God protect you, oh Sheikh and may he grant you a long life.

lamine ezzahi Posted 2008-04-24

I am so in love with our master of châabi, Amar Ezzahi. May God protect you, oh Sheikh and may he grant you a long life -Saint Eugene

nabi Posted 2008-04-25

I want to listen to Ezzahi’s songs.

sidali Posted 2008-05-16

Salam Alikoum. I sincerely love Zahi. For me he is the best Algerian singer of all time. I live in Leveilley Hussein Dey and i tell you that all of Leveilley Hussein Dey listens to Zahi and are dying for him. My brother, Zahi puts an end to gloominess and opens the heart. May God protect him for us and grant him long life. I would really like you to send us pictures of our sheikh Amimer. May God protect him. My brother, I am dying for him. My brother when I listen to him, I die. Brother, he is a breath of oxygen for me. Brother, of course, without forgetting our late Sheikh Lhachemi. Salam alikoum.

MoM Posted 2008-05-16

Ammimar you are “the rock” of Chaabi music… “Put Khol to your eyes all days…You are bright in dreams…God created in you the best soul…better than mine, it is nothing Meryouma…My life is destined in your hands Meriouma…”

noureddine Posted 2008-05-18

My name is Nouredine. I am from Sedrata. I really admire our sheikh, Amar Essahi, the father of melodies and Algerian music and the master of chaâbi. I have been listening to him for 20 years and I will listen to him forever. God protect him.

siliane Posted 2008-05-23

Dear Amimer. You are the master of masters. I like so much your poems especially ‘Youm El Jemaa Kherjou Ryam’, ‘Fatouma’, Boussalef Meryam’ and ‘Khal Ayounek Nadariyat’. I hope that one day you will sing us in Kabyle.

samir Posted 2008-05-24

Amar Ezzahi is without a doubt one of the best songwriters, composers and tunesmiths of chaâbi. He contributed to revolutionising chaâbi music thanks to his mastering of the mandolin, his melodious voice, his change of tempo and his work with regards to lyrics and the adaptation of song lyrics. Certainly, Algeria will never know another man or even chaâbi of this magnitude. He is an artist to the fullest meaning, and even his way of being has confirmed this. What is truly unfortunate is the rarity of his works (studio-recorded, live and so on). This has prevented our grand Amar from affirming himself in the Arab world and even internationally. His style is unique in the Arab world and his works are some of the most beautiful in contemporary music. Long live our maestro!

lanzul Posted 2008-05-26

I'm looking for a lyrics (text) of 'Slat Ala Mohamed' song, in english transcription (it can be also in any Slavic language, e.g. russian). Where can I find it ? Regards

bencheikh nawal Posted 2008-06-25

I am truly astonished by all his fans and admirers. Indeed, no one can rival his talent anywhere else in the world, but, as he is our cousin, I can say that I do not understand his fans devoted adoration. He has not given a reply to any of them. He seems so indifferent. Why is he so cold and so distant with people?

Karim Posted 2008-06-26

Hello my friends, I am happy to know that not only many people love our cheikh, but also a lot of girls. This is truly extraordinary. I received our cheikh on 17 March 2008 in order to celebrate a party of mine. I will have you know that he is the supreme master, no contest. He was so nice towards our small audience. I had the honour of being the first person he played for in 2008. He also had some great, estimable artists with him, such as Kamel Benkhodja, Mohamed Chellal and other great men. Thank you, Cheikhna, for all that you have taught me.

Madani Posted 2008-07-16

Hello, Indeed, the Sheikh is well liked and loved. He has a large fan base. But, this is exaggerated by some people to the point that other great people are being forgotten, such as his rival, Hachemi G., God rest his soul. There are a lot of fans of Ezzahi who listen to Ezzahi just to look cool or fit in, when they do not even know anything about châabi. That is the truth. Our country is rich in connoisseurs, but it is also rich in other people—the false fans who should leave art to the artists and real music lovers!

zouiche ramzy Posted 2008-08-21

Ever since my childhood, I have been a big fan of Amar. I even remember how I bought a tape player just to listen to how he played his instruments. I wish you a long life, meknine!

moh Posted 2008-09-08

He moves me so!

zidane Posted 2008-10-12

Thank you, Amar Ezzahi. You are my everything. I am proud of you, my brother, because you are a man that sings in Kabyle. Thank you, thank you, Mohamed

aziz Posted 2008-10-12

I would indeed like to see and meet him and ask him a few questions. I am a fan of his. Now, I am more than that: I always believed that he was part of my family, the Ben Zahi’s. That makes him even better. Perhaps I am a son of Zahi? I am not sure, but I do like to play his melodies. I love Amar Ezzahi. I offer him my life!

zeddam mohamed Posted 2008-10-18

Amar Ezzahi is an exceptional singer. His voice is golden. He is fluent. He speaks the truth. He sings with affection. He works with the balance. He learns by faith. He obeys his sheikhs with goodness. Oh Lord heal him, assist him and make of him a candle of this time. Oh Lord most merciful, Who answers the prayers of every human being. Peace be upon the followers of the right path. Amen.

elhadi Posted 2008-10-22

I like châabi. I love our star, Amar Ezzahi ykhalouini. He is the star of châabi just like Zizou is in football.

amir EzZzZaHi Posted 2008-10-24

moh Posted 2008-10-25

Hi sheikh. May God protect you from the eye and words of the envious and die with the deceased.

brahim DELLYS Posted 29 days ago

Sheikh Amar Ezzahi is a great singer but we have our own singer in Dellys and his name is Merzak Bouarab. He will be Amar Ezzahi’s replacement. He won first place in Radio El Bahdja’s contest. If you want to listen to his music, add me to your MSN contacts. -Salam

Salam alikum. May God grant you long life our sheikh Ezzahi, Ezzahi, Ezzahi. May God, God willing, heal you.

Nadjim Posted 19 days ago

Hello, Sahitou, Nice biography, but there are some mistakes, like "Algerian Amar Ezzahi, a brilliant writer and interpreter of châabi (Algerian popular music)". Ammar Ezzahi is not a writer, but only a singer. He never writes a song. The lyrics (texts) were written by another writers, like Mohamed Ben Slimane (Goumriyet Lebroudj, for exemple), Mohamed Ben Ali Oueld Arrzine (Ma Tdoum El Hakma, for exemple), Mohamed Ennadjar (Men Kous Hadjbou, for exemple), Mohamed Ben Msayeb (Kamel Ezzine ouel Bha El Madani, for exemple), Mohamed Ben Sahla (Youm El Khmis, For exemple)... and others. Those writers were borned in 14 century, 16 century ... etc Other Mistake in your Biography: Ammar recorded more than "one" cassette. You traduced a biography made in frensh website, and automaticly you kept all the mistakes of these Biography... that's not cool! I love Ezzahi and I wish him a long life inchallah. Amiiiine! Ah, for everybogy, If you would have another right informations about Algerian chaabi music, tape "Forum Chaabi" in google. We are some chaabi lover's, and we talk "ONLY" about our lovely chaabi music. But the language is in frensh... Your's Freindly! Allah Idaouem Gostokoum Yal Khawa et vive Chaabi Algérien

abdelouhab Posted 16 days ago

I said it and I will say it again: those who do not like Amar Ezzahi need to leave here because they do not know anything about châabi. I have listened to Amar since my birth because like father like son. Those who do not like Amar know nothing about châabi. Let me introduce myself: USMA supporter, virage, black and red unstoppable! OK enough until the next edition.

I love you, I love you our sheikh Zahi. By God I just listen to your songs, I am a fan of the popular and Andalusian art. We have a sheikh in Douaoua Bahria, his name is Sabri. He is one of the sheikhs of popular music. May God protect you Sabri and preserve you for us.
