Interview with Algerian singer Fella Ababsa

2005-10-13

Fella Ababsa -- daughter of great Algerian poet, musician and singer Abdelhamid Ababsa – is a singer whose rocky, melodious voice can seduce an audience. In a recent interview with Magharebia.com, she spoke of her influences and her work.

[File] Ababsa likes to be referred to as an Arab ambassador to the world.

Magharebia: Fella, you grew up to the sound of Algerian popular and Andalusian music. Could you tell us how this music came to affect your musical style?

Fella Ababsa: You are right. I was surrounded by art and music from my earliest childhood. My father loved Andalusian music.

In fact, I come from a family of musicians. My father is none other than the famous poet and musician, Abdelhamid Ababsa. My brother and sister, Najeeb and Naima, are also singers in their own right and well-known in Algeria.

Andalusian and popular Algerian music were my route into Arab music. It was the beauty of Andalusian music in particular which made me want to find out more about music, to discover other musical styles. And it is this same music that gave me my love of the oud and the piano.

It was at the age of 15 that I started performing alongside music groups from Algiers and at the age of 20, I left for London to learn more about music.

Magharebia: Do you like rai music?

Ababsa: I love Arabic music in general! Because each style makes me discover a part of myself which I did not know before, I show my fans a new Fella every time I sing.

However, it is true that there are certain situations where only Algerian language and music can express what I want to convey to my audience, especially when I am singing for an Algerian audience.

my heart is Algerian, my nationality is Arab.

But do not forget that, although my heart is Algerian, my nationality is Arab.

Magharebia: Your album "Ahl Ettarab" (The Music People) earned you a lot of criticism. Is it true that you are the new Oum Kalthoum?

Ababsa: No, no! (Laughter) I would not dare compare myself to the great Oum Kalthoum and I doubt there will ever be another like her. Oum Kalthoum is a legend and legends are unique.

I know that many people misinterpreted the chorus of one of my songs. The fact that I mentioned the name of the great diva alongside my own does not mean that I am comparing myself to her. The text of this song needed the name of another singer and Oum Kalthoum was the logical choice, given the respect that everyone has for her. Believe me, it is just a simple misunderstanding and I hope I have clarified things. I am happy with what I have achieved. My fans love what I do, and I cannot ask for more than that.

Magharebia: You have sung in several countries -- including the United States, Tunisia, Morocco and France. Which is your favourite audience?

Ababsa: It is not easy to say. But in general, I feel closer to my Arab audience because they understand what I sing and they appreciate my voice. Not forgetting the fact that we share common values.

But singing for a foreign audience is just as important for me. It is a very special and different experience, where I become an ambassador for all Arab countries.

Magharebia: You have already taken part in "Studio 2M", a Moroccan programme which introduces young talent. Did you get your career started through programmes like this? And what do you think of the concept?

Ababsa: It is an excellent programme. I was really impressed by all the young talent taking part in it. They had extraordinary voices and incredible presence on stage. I wish the greatest luck and success to all of them.

As for my career, it started in Algiers with little groups from there. I was not lucky enough to take part in a programme like "Studio 2M", which provides a great opportunity for young talent.

Magharebia: You play the oud and the piano and sing in all styles imaginable. What is your favourite style?

Ababsa: I do not have a favourite style. I like everything I sing and for each style I need a different instrument.

I do not want to specialise, and that is what makes Fella who she is!

You were sublime, Yesterday, with Djoumana Bouaid. You were a miracle of song. We love you, Fella.

salima Posted 2007-05-28

Hello Fella, In my opinion, you are the best Arab singer. I find so many wonderful qualities in you: you voice is sublime, you are intelligent and strong in character. You are my type of woman: very beautiful. I think you show the best image of Algerian women. I find you modest and realistic. You have the whole world admiring you when you are on Rotana. You are the best of them all. I wish you much happiness and prosperity. Please, always remember to give to those who love you and are counting on you. You are truly a star like Fairouz and Warda.

I love fellaoui

Adnane Posted 2007-07-10

My heart is Algerian and my nationality is Arab, but I should specify second-class Arab. Otherwise, why don’t Arabs in the Middle East sing in Algerian? This is normal: it is the law of the weakest… they must adapt to the strongest, and not the other way around. Moroccans and Algerians are the only ones Arabs do not understand, because they are not Arabs. They are more or less Arabic-speaking, like the Sudanese and Somalians who judge themselves pure-bred Arabs. Any chance they are black to reveal their false Arab-ness?

zohra Posted 2007-08-02

How many cosmetic surgeries have you had in your life?

zouhir Posted 2007-08-06

Hi Fella, how are you, I love you so much. By God the Greatest, my sister Jamila and I in Morocco, have all your songs, all your news and concerts.

melissa Posted 2007-10-09

You are adorable. Never change yourself. There are a lot of people who are jealous of you because you are beautiful, your voice is sublime and, above all else, you are spontaneous—a gift not everyone has. Stay like you are, we love like you are now.

walid Posted 2007-11-03

Hi Fella, How are you doing? I love you!

abdou Posted 2007-11-07

I am Algerian, Arab and Muslim, and proud of it. It makes no sense to speak with an Egyptian accent while you (not "vous") while you are eating bread. Frankly, you have never been on the level.

katia Posted 2007-12-14

I adore both your songs and you. I am sending you a big “Hello!”

zaki Posted 2007-12-25

Hi, I am French and I would like to know if you are going to do a concert in France. That would be nice. I adore you. I am a fan.

sousou Posted 2007-12-30

Why did you have cosmetic surgery? You have become bad.

allaoua Posted 2008-01-03

Fella, I am very proud of you, an Algerian. Happy New Year! -Kisses, Chaoui, from Ain Mlilla.

عبد القادر Posted 2008-01-03

God endowed you with a fascinating beauty, you have a big number of fans, but no one to guide you to the path of your Lord. May God guide you to the right of path daughter of the faithful Algeria.

NINA Posted 2008-01-06

You are worthless.

selma(Suisse) Posted 2008-01-09

This message is addressed to Zohra, who asked Fella how many operations she has had, and Nina, who treated her like she was worthless: My dear little Zohra, next time it would do you good to read a little or even take a course in French before blowing your mouth off about Fella. She is a singer, and you, what do you do (besides make inadmissible mistakes in French)? As for you, Fella, stay like you are. You are who you are, sing like you want to, dress like you want to and do what your heart tells you to. That is how one advances in life. Kisses to Naïma for being so grateful. ‘nina’—I prefer to write your penname in lower-case—your education leaves a lot to be desired. You have the mentality of an imbecile. I think you will always be alone or stuck surrounded with people like you. As for your age, you must not be more than 12 years old?!

keltoum Posted 2008-02-03

All I can say is that once a co-worker of mine was in the same boat as Fella, and when he got to work he said it was enough just to see his angelic face in order to find yourself well composed. I love you, Fella. Stay strong!

sara Posted 2008-02-22

Hello Fella, You are adorable. You are the most beautiful singer in the Arab World. I hope you stay strong and I wish you a personal life full of success. Give my “Hello” to Tata Naima and your daughters. Take care of yourself. Bye, Rabie Chafik

kamel Posted 2008-03-11

There is nothing but suppleness, Fella.

L RASSOUL Posted 2008-03-18

I am Fella’s number one fan. I think of her as the ONLY singer and musician at the same time! Her voice is unique! She chooses her own lyrics and music to better make us love her songs. I adore them! Her voice is so extraordinary that she does not even need musicians! She has people to help, of course, it is not by accident that she sings and composes. Her father — don’t forget — was there for her because he was a great musician who had a lot of music in his blood. With his unique voice, Ababsa made any one who listened vibrate! Good luck, my dear Fella! In this life everything is going bad and the good is disappearing paving the way for the bad who are flooding this earth. Case in point: Haifa! My god... They found the means and the institutions to open the way for them!!! None of this makes sense. Especially, when Fella does not kiss hands. The day will come when you will shine, because you were born to be a star, even more then Oum Keltoum was!!! (I do not think that she had as many sticks stuck in her spokes as you have had.) Stay strong! With your incredible voice, I am sure you will succeed!!! -Leila from Annaba

KIMOU Posted 2008-03-25

Hi Fella (or should I say “our Algerian Rose”), I miss you so much. I love you!!!

L RASSOUL Posted 2008-03-27

Thank you, Magharebia, for having published my comment about Fella (whom I adore). I truly wish her every success, because, unfortunately, a voice alone is not enough. You need a unique and manifold voice at the same time! Unique so that it is recognised just upon hearing it and manifold so that it can interpret all music, no matter its origin. And, this is not all. She composes songs too!!! Do you know a lot of singers who are composers? Yes, but not tons of them!!! And, when it comes to Fella, this is not all; she plays on several instruments at the same time! She plays the piano, lute, guitar, qanoun, accordion and so on! Frankly, do you know that many singers who have all these talents at the same time??? (I am speaking about both male and female singers who are up on stage… the BIG voices, not the little ones who strut their bodies around, who are pretty to see and horrible to listen to!) I do not think so!!! If you come up with even a single response, I would like to know who it is!!! In any case, those are my reasons for adoring her!!! Thank you again, Magharebia.

L RASSOUL Posted 2008-04-03

Hi Magharebia. Thank you again. I won’t hide my happiness in seeing my comments published in full. This has encouraged me to continue on in my work, that is to say; to talk more and more about Fella, the marvel. If there are seven wonders of the world, then Fella is the eighth. If there are eight, then Fella is the ninth. I hope she finds a good manager who can open some doors that have always been closed to her. And, I hope she finds a good producer who can produce her albums like they should be! It needs to be known that all the beautiful people who sing sell their albums everywhere have people behind them!!! But, Fella unfortunately has Rotana behind her, and we can well see what is happening there!!! We, the television audience, have not been fooled!! It is Salem El Hendi who makes it rain or be sunny! When he wants to put someone out there, he lays out the red carpets. If not, he puts sticks in their spokes. I am sure that there have been many who have been victim to his management, for example: Fella, Walid tawfik, Ihan Tawfik, Mouin Cherif, Nour Mhena and so on. The list is quite long!!! I pray that this horrible person, whom I do not even want to name because I hate him so, stops playing with fire!!! Excuse me if I have taken up a lot of lines, but frankly I am tired of seeing everybody clapping for just anyone!!! Thank you for everything, Magharebia.

L RASSOUL Posted 2008-04-06

I send a “Hi” out to all of the Grand Maghreb through Magharebia, which I consider as a friend with whom we can talk about anything!!! Yesterday, I saw Fella’s much anticipated music video on Jaras—a channel which I deeply respect. I think I must have been completely hallucinating!!! I cannot even believe it anymore!!! The way Fella interpreted “Hobla” and the theme of it should have been voted as the best interpretation of “Hobla” ever—either Fella’s or that of Rola Saad or Myriam Attalah (whom I just heard for the first time)!!! I was happy to finally see our sublime Fella’s music video, but disappointed at how she was stupidly voted down. How can you compare the incomparable??? I do not understand anything anymore!!! What about you??? It is clear that we are lacking in good sense! And, every day a little bit more so! What do you think? Thank you, Magharebia!!!

hmed Posted 2008-04-07

You can again become like you once were, with your hawzi style and your old face. That would be better, because now you are making all of us Algerians a bit ashamed.

L RASSOUL Posted 2008-04-10

Hi Magharebia and all of you who love Fella! I would like to respond to “Idola”, who was online on 27 February 2008 and wants to know who Fella’s songwriter is. There are several, ranging from Tachakourat to Lamaa Raetou. In her Oriental songs it is Saffouh Ghaghala who writes the majority of her music. He is a very famous, great Lebanese poet. But, he is not the only one. There are also others who wrote beautiful songs for her—the authors of the Arab world. Fella herself also wrote a lot of her songs. There is also Rabah Zaitout, one of our Algerian poets!!! Idola, please, could you be more precise with your question, because I might have an answer for you. Best Regards

Anonymous Posted 2008-04-13

I love Fella when she sings El Mouacheh.

zina Posted 2008-04-23

Fella Ababsa is the most beautiful singer because she is Algerian and all Algerians are nice and extraordinary. May God protect you, sons of my country. Thank you.

L RASSOUL Posted 2008-04-27

Hello to All of the Maghreb! My big thanks goes out to Magharebia for everything it is doing! I have so many things to say about Fella that I do not even know where to start! In any case, any time I have some free time, I take advantage of it in order to read an article and say what I think about what is going on or, rather, what is happening most of the time. Nowadays, what we see is completely manufactured. It is rare that it ever reflects reality!!!! As for me, I ask myself a lot of questions and I suggest you do the same!!! Know how to do your share! Don’t swallow everything they want you to believe!!! Be the master of your own thoughts!!! Don’t let others who make things up guide you and impose what they want upon you!!! I am scared of waking of one day and seeing the human species disappeared, leaving everything to the animal kingdom!!! To get back to Fella: she will always be the best! She was invited to—guess where!—Abu Dabi! Like always, she was adorable and marvellous. I hope with all of my heart that she will keep on shining like the real star she is!!! See you soon, The Messenger

L RASSOUL Posted 2008-05-04

A big “Hi!” to Magharebia! Do you publish a newspaper or magazine? How can we read you in Algeria? Is it possible to subscribe? Please respond!!!

Leila Posted 2008-05-10

She was born in Barika, right next to Ouled Djellal and she grew up in Biskra, Ouled Djellal, where I live!!!

L RASSOUL Posted 2008-05-10

Hi Magharebia and all those who are thinkers and all those who are conscious! What has happened??? I would like to see some news!!!??? All I see is blood everywhere!!! The people are suffering and evil is spreading everywhere!!! Iraq after Saddam—what a catastrophe!!! And, Ghaza!? There is still no solution to this one and I don’t think there will ever be one!!! And, Lebanon is just getting worse and worse!!! Why??? It is because the people vote for people who make a [expletive deleted] mess of the world!!! What should I do, sitting in front of the TV??? I flip through the channels and I put on Fella, who, because of her voice, makes me forget the horror that is forever in front of me!!! Thank you Fella!

Expletive deleted.

L RASSOUL Posted 2008-05-28

Hi Magharebia! I do not understand why there are no comments except mine!? Is there nothing more to say? In any case, with regards to Fella, I think that there is always something to say and always some sort of denouncements to make. Rotana is losing its best elements! If this is its strategy, then it is seriously mistaken!!! With the exception of some who recently joined and will soon tire of it, the voices Rotana is sponsoring are worse than poor!!! Rotana thinks that by changing its decoration and a few faces things will work our, but thing remain the same at the heart of it and it is the same old video clips that are run and rerun! Truthfully, there was no change at all!!! Fortunately, there are other channels that are more diversified. Hats off to Miss Nidal El-Ahmadia for “El-Jaras”, which keeps going up day after day!!! Long live women of such stature!!! In any case, with regards to Fella, I hope she does not participate in Rotana, because they are burying here with all of her video clips! It is unbelievable what all this saboteur, Salim El-Handi, can do!!! Good evening everybody!

karim Posted 2008-06-04

I love you a tonne, Fella.

L RASSOUL Posted 2008-06-21

Hello Everyone! I was a bit late to learn of the sad news for our dear Fella and, of course, her entire family, who lost their mother! In the name of all of Fella’s fans, I offer the entire Ababsa family, for whom I have enormous respect, my sincere condolences!!! My big thanks go to Magharebia for giving us this place to communicate!!!

Fella is the queen of Arab music without rival. Her eyes are full of nostalgia and girlish flirtation. Her golden plaits are shining like sun to lighten for us the next melody from the nice era. Fella, the beautiful emerald, fill our ears with beauty. We are with you. Nothing will melt away our love for you. Despite the raining weather and tornado, you will remain the queen. Fella music will remain the best melodies. All the members of your flourishing forum greet you. We are with you whatever is said or will be said.

L RASSOUL Posted 2008-08-27

Hello Everyone! I spoke about Fella with pride before! She has an extraordinary simplicity about here! She has a sort of gentleness that is right for a diva!!! And, I would never allow myself to throw out undeserved comments, as all of Algeria and the entire Arab World feel this way about Fulla!!! But, what happened to my dear Fella? Why is there so much meanness surrounding you? They want to ruin your career by whatever means possible! Have they not done enough already??? Have they not finished with their dirty lies??? They want to dirty your image!!! Do they not understand that you bear an eternal perfume and that you breathe of a complete beauty and freshness because you are, after all, Fella!!! To those who are not sensitive to your voice and angelic beauty, I say that they need to go get some help!!! These poor wretches need to go stand in front of a mirror and judge themselves before criticising the greatest of the great stars, the one and only sultana of of Haouzi Tarab, Chaoui, Sahrawi, Rai and Western music and of classical and modern improvisation!!! Her voice is a musical encyclopaedia!!! How can they criticise you???? It is a shame to not that the world is getting worse and worse. –L. Rassoul

skoura Posted 2008-09-08

Hi Fella, I am responding in your place to those who have written such nastiness. I tell them that they can say what they will. To you, Fella, I tell you that your voice, beauty and simplicity make you great. You have nothing to be jealous of. I saw you on Tarata, and I was speechless because of your sublime voice. If you were to sing tarabe, I bet you will never hear such things spoken of you again. —A compatriot proud of your success

I hope that you will join the forum of lrassoull warmest greetings to queen Fella.

I have returned, my dear Magharebia, after having a nice vacation and a nice Ramadan. I watched the show with Chadi Khalifa on Aljaras TV then, and I was able to watch an interview with my beloved Fella there!!! What a party it was! She is truly a diva in all her splendour!!! Unfortunately, she is still persecuted by the worst types!!! My God, will she ever get the glory she deserves??? Why must the great people of this world always be harassed by the losers who surround them until the day they die just to get people to talk about them. And, who is talking about them??? It is the same losers shouting from their soapboxes. Only when the tree has been felled can you measure its size!!! I am referring to Susan Tamim, who was villainously murdered!!! These losers are capable of anything!!! I fear for you, my dear Fella. I fear that they will kill you slowly!!! Do not let them do this to you! Do not let down your guard!!! Please, open your eyes to those around you and read what I wrote! Wake up from your drowsiness and respond to those around you!! More importantly, measure the tree while it is still standing, because afterward it will be too late!!! –L. Rassoul

LRASSOUL Posted 2008-10-26

Hi Magharebia and all the Maghrebis!!! I just discovered a magnificently done forum for my dear Fella through Google. I will give you the website: www.fulla4all.tk. Go visit it, my friends; it is worth the bother!!! Bravo for the entire team working there!!! I think that if everybody were to united behind a good cause, then, no matter the subject, we would better learn how to communicate amongst ourselves and the days to come would be better for us neighbours, cousins, friends and human beings!

فوزي Posted 2008-10-29

Salam alikum. Where is Naima Ababsa? There are no news of her. Does anyone know anything about her? Thank you.

hocine Posted 2008-11-04

Hello- I hope that you are healthy. I do not know if you are interested in the song “Moltazima”, but I can do a lot of things for you. See you soon. –Sincerely, Hocine

zorette Posted 2008-11-07

I love you, Fella, but when you sing in Algerian the Middle-Eastern Arabs don't like you.

LRASSOUL Posted 2008-11-10

Hi all- Over and over and over again I can speak about Fella because nobody can ever talk about her too much!!! Yesterday, on Hannibal TV, a Tunisian channel, she was on a variety show called “El Lila Liltek”. Those two hours passed like two seconds! She sang like she always does, like a diva!!! She was more than extraordinary!!! She sang Moroccan, Algerian and Tunisian songs and songs by Oum Kelthoum and Warda! It was marvellous! What an evening!!! I will give you the website where you can watch the programme on the Internet: www.hannibaltv.com.tn. She is a real sultana!!! Wow!!!

azyadhee Posted 2008-11-10

I love Fulla and Naima Ababsa in the duo “el djazair wa chahida” written and composed by the sheikha of weddings Naima, of whom we don’t talk much. Naima Ababsa wrote for sheikhs of our country such as dzayer bnat laarach el kaima, elly baghi yeksi martou etc… Finally she is the one who deserves most to be the daughter of Abdelhamid Ababsa, the singer of the authentic heritage, excellent musician and interpreter of our rich heritage. May God protect you Ababsa girls, we love you.

azyadhee Posted 2008-11-10

Tell us about both of the Ababsa sisters, Naima and Fella, who impress us as the latest Algerian duo. “El Djazair wa Chahida”, was written by Naima Ababsa, about whom much is never said. She is blessed by being a daughter of Abdelhamid Ababsa. She sings and writes about her rich motherland. She is an excellent musician. She is the diva of marriage music. In the end, I adore her.

نيهاوند غصون/إيمان الجزائر Posted 2008-12-03

Fella, by God, you are more than great and more than an artist. You honour all the Algerian people. In my opinion, you are the constellation of Maghreb people. In my opinion you are better than Oum Keltoum, Sabah Fakhri, Fairouz and Abdelhalim. I love you to death. I love you so much. I wish you success and fame in all fields.

siham Posted 2009-01-21

Naima Ababsa, whom we so love, is a true diva. I had the honour of helping out at her concert in San Francisco in November 2008. A million bravos to Naima and Fella!

fouqeut's Posted 2009-02-02

Happy New Year! Best wishes! I love Fella. I hate Naima. Thanks and keep it up.

I adore your spontaneity, simplicity and voice. My God, what a voice!!! You subjugate me, Fella! May God protect and keep you for us. One thing: I appeal to the proper Algerian authorities to broadcast the music videos and of this great diva. She herself is a graduate school of music and song. Here is a kiss, Fella!

I have admiration and respect for everything you do and everything you are. I hope to have the opportunity to meet you one day so that I can make you a part of – of course - an art project of mine. In effect, I write poetry in French, English and Spanish and put them to musical compositions (playbacks). Currently, I have recorded four albums. I would be delighted to discuss with you the types of musical practices, should you be interests be the idea of showing everyone else in Algeria talents capable of shining through at the global level. I hope you will have the time to read my message. I keep looking forward to hearing from you with a big pleasure. -Sincerely and friendly yours, Hocine from Tlemcen

Fella, I love you. I will die for you, daughter of my country. You’re the empress of Arab music. We'd die for you. We'll support you to the end, my dear Fella.
