Interview with Moroccan football star Jawad Zaïri

2005-09-21

The Moroccan national football team will meet its Tunisian counterpart in Tunis on 8 October in the last qualifying game for World Cup 2006. The team needs to win to qualify for the finals in Germany. In an interview with Magharebia.com, player Jawad Zaïri acknowledges the magnitude of the mission in Tunis.

By Hassan Benmehdi for Magharebia in Casablanca- 21/09/05

[File] The success of the Moroccan team is the number one concern for Zaïri

Magharebia: For the majority of observers, the national side's latest performance against Botswana was far from convincing. Do you agree?

Jawad Zaïri: Clearly. We didn't play up to our usual standard for the match against Botswana. The Moroccan public likes to see good goals and a good game. It's true, we lost a bit of that, but we hope to get it back for future matches. It should also be said that the quality of the pitch wasn't favourable for playing such an important football match. Fortunately, Talal Karkouri was there to save the day. His goal gave us something to smile about and he enabled us to snatch the three points. In any case, we did what we needed to do. Now we need to think and prepare seriously for the next match against Tunisia.

Magharebia: Speaking of that, what can you tell us about the upcoming encounter?

Zaïri: Looking at the match against Tunisia, it's clearly the most important game the national side will have played since the qualifiers started. It's a decisive encounter for the Moroccan national side. Now, we need to go and play to win. There's only 90 minutes left to guarantee our qualification for the World Cup in Germany in 2006.We don't have a choice. Either we win or we're sunk. The players are optimistic. We're giving everything we have to try and get a win in Tunisia. We've got to take it right to the line, play offensively and play all out. If we go out with this attitude, we expect to reap a lot of benefits, Allah willing.

Magharebia: Will you be scoring, Jawad?

the important thing is that the team wins.

Zaïri: I really hope so. But the most important thing for me is that my contribution on the pitch will bear fruit. Whether it's scoring or passing, the important thing is that the team wins.

Magharebia: The Tunisian national side is still a good team, isn't it?

Zaïri: Tactically, you have to say that the Tunisian players are at the top of their game. Their coach is a professional who knows how to manage game tactics. It's a team with attacking players who can make a real difference at any moment. And I'm also talking about Francileudo Dos Santos, who scores every time he plays us. As for us, we just have to remain vigilant at all times.

Magharebia: Any final words, Jawad?

Zaïri: We'll do our very best to qualify for the Germany 2006 World Cup and to make the Moroccan people happy.

Jawad Zairai is better than betrayal as Khalid Belhrouz and Adil Shihi who opted to represent other teams. Jawad has been a devout student of Mustapha Hajji [Moroccan player] who remained faithful to his national team!

We are impatiently waiting for your return Jawad. We know that you are player number 1 with your team Astiras Tryolis. I don’t know why did the bald Fathi Jamal not call you. I hope that Lemerre will call you because honestly the national team is without you is like salt without taste.

hajar lasri Posted 2008-06-30

Never mind Jaouad. It is the coaches who will lose. No one of them did any good from Badou Zaki to Fathi Jamal. Everyone is looking just for his interest. Never mind. You are still young even if you don’t come back to the national team this year, you will come back next year. You have many fans that are waiting for you. I love you so much. Hajar Lasri. If you feel that people are lying to you and don’t like you, I am with you to the end. Enter my msn and try. Give me an opportunity, ok. We deserve to be friends. Good luck Jouad. Sorry, I am not good in French but never mind if you don’t understand my message, you will understand it with the heart not with your mind, if your wife doesn’t read it of course. I am 20 but believe me, I am many many times better than your wife. Ok darling, talk to you later. Bye.

Jawad; You are the best! Come back, please!

yassir Posted 2008-09-09

For me you are the best player in the world by God. God willing, you will remain the first. I hope from God that you come back to play in the Moroccan national team, oh Lord, amen.

سفيان Posted 2008-09-11

Jawad Zairi is an excellent worker with his high skills like other players Mostafa Hajji and Marouane Chamakh. In my opinion, the Moroccan national team without Jawad Zairi is like a pitch without players. I also play football with Maghreb El Fassi club. If I am successful with this team, I will play with the Moroccan national team and will be the best.

aziz baouham mazi Posted 2008-09-18

Jawad Zaïri is a good player. He is the best African player. —Mazi

khalid Posted 2008-09-18

i love zairi . he is the best foot balplayer in morocco

mohamed marzouki Posted 2008-09-21

Jawad Zairi is a great player but without a national spirit like other players. They don’t play for the national jersey or the national flag. They rather play only for money. I am not talking about all players but most of them. We don’t need a famous coach. What we need is the national spirit which is the basis in playing.

gol Posted 2008-09-22

The truth is that Jawad Zaïri is a good player. He is so good that he did not manage to get on any team in France, not Sochaux and not Nantes, both small clubs. Above all else, Zaïri is a joke on the field.

jamal chahboun Posted 2008-09-22

I am Jamal Chahboun. I like the Moroccan player Jawad Zairi. I hope that you will return to the Moroccan national team as soon as possible. I wish to see you as the best player in the world. I hope from all my heart that you will come back.

hussin Posted 2008-10-10

I hate you. You have nothing to do with football. Stay away from football.

mostapha yiazzaoui Posted 2008-10-15

I am a fan of Jawad Zairi.

امين المشيشي Posted 2008-10-20

أسامة المود Posted 21 days ago

My name is Oussama El Moud from the city of Oujda. I live in the town of Sidi Bennour. I love you Jawad. You are the best player in the world. I hope that you will play with the Moroccan national team in the world cup 2010 in South Africa. I think that you start from now on to train with them. God willing you will play with them in the next game whether it is friendly or anything. An observation, in my opinion, start tomorrow. But the pending question is where are you now and with whom do you play? I want a reply very soon. Thank you.

خالد Posted 21 days ago

Jawad is an unsuccessful player. Everyone remembers his performance in the club of Ittihad Assaoudi.

hicham Posted 10 days ago

Salam everyone. I also like the player Jawad. But, unfortunately, we hope that he returns to the national team. Jawad plays in Greece with Istra Tripolisse.

abdelkarim Posted 5 days ago

Salam Jawad Zairi. God bless you. You are always in the heart.

salah e dine Posted 2 days ago

Hi Jawad. I'd like to take this opportunity to ask a question which has intrigued me since 2004. You are the first, best and greatest player I have seen on the national team. Therefore, why weren’t you included in games held between 2004 and 2008? I want to know why you have not participated and we don’t see you on the bench. The national team without you is called the Atlas Dancers. I hope that you will come back very soon.
