Interview with popular Moroccan singer Najat Aatabou
2005-10-26
Najat Aatabou became famous thanks to her talent and to fellow singer Hajj Houssein, who discovered her back in 1983. She now is one of the most popular singers in Morocco. As a teenager, she sang at weddings in her hometown of Khemisset. Her first album "I'm Sick of It" sold more than 500,000 copies. Aatabou talked about her success and other matters with Magharebia.com
![]() [File] Aatabou likes to shock to draw a larger audience's attention |
Magharebia:Najat Aatabou, you have had a successful career since your first album "I'm Sick of It". Can you tell us more about it?
Najat Aatabou : I started singing when I was very young. I have always known this was what I wanted to do, but you know how things are…What? A female singer? Hammou Yazidi was my idol, he influenced me a lot and encouraged me in some way. I started in my hometown of Khemisset -- singing at weddings, baptisms, etc. Over time, "Najat" the singer was more and more requested. People in the region started recording my performances.
But I knew I could give much more. So, I went to Casablanca and the rest is already known. Singer Hajj Houssein liked my voice and introduced me to the general public.
Magharebia: What about your family? Were they supportive?
Aatabou: No… not at all! My parents were firmly against it. But for me, quitting my dream was definitely out of the question. I then left my family, my hometown and my friends behind and went to Casablanca. I met Hajj Houssein at a party there and thanks to his support, I was able achieve what I am today.
Magharebia: Your songs made you a heroine for your audience, but the enemy of a number of leaders. Why and how did this occur?
Aatabou: It is my boldness to tell things as they are. I know perfectly what I want and I do not hesitate to try and get it.
I want my audience to break even in my songs. If my own style and words were shocking at first, the Moroccan audience now knows for sure that what I sing is a sheer reflection of reality in our society.
My lyrics address women and men, I make people think
My songs are just me. On stage, I dare, I sing in Arabic and Berber. My lyrics address women and men, I make people think, I make them dance… and this is Najat Aatabou.
Magharebia: You married Hassan Dikouk, who is also an artist. What were his contributions to your music?
Aatabou: They were numerous. He encouraged me to review my music so as to make it more accessible to all music lovers in the world. He was the one who introduced all these modern music instruments like electric guitar and bass to replace traditional instruments. His advice is highly valued!
Magharebia: You have performed many concerts in Morocco and abroad. Can you compare your fans here and elsewhere?
Aatabou: Here in Morocco, my songs are seen as entertainment, my fans listen to them to party or to have a good time.
Abroad, it is a bit more than this! I become a symbol of all that they left behind, like the "bled" (the homeland).
But be it in Morocco or abroad, my fans are simply exceptional and unique.

You are an Arab Muslim from a Muslim country. Has the time for your repentance not come yet. I hope you come to realize your shortcomings and forget about the "singing message"!
la reine Posted 2007-01-18
I agree with what Kawtar said.
homido98 Posted 2007-01-27
You are the best singer! I find in your beautiful voice a relief of my suffering which I can't find with my doctor. You are my cure and may you encounter further success, oh jewel of the Atlas!
achraf Posted 2007-02-05
I am a Moroccan from Rabat. Why do you sing like this? Plus, I don’t like the clothes you wear, you look like a kid.
ابرو محمد من اسفي Posted 2007-02-18
I want from Najat Atabou to go back to her old songs from 1983 to 1987 during the days of Maaroufi who pleased us with his Oud playing while Najat enters the stage like a princess singing "J'en ai mar" and "ras El ayin Lmima As dert Ana" we were emotionally connected with her because her family rejected to back her up. I hope she sings those songs again and what about the great artist Maaroufi!
asmae Posted 2007-02-23
outstanding!

Salam Alaikoum, God has endowed you with a distinct voice and you've reached the hearts of people but where's God dear Najat? Do you remember God when you sing before the public and raise your voice? You're dear and a Moroccan sister in our veins there's an Arab Muslim and Amazigh blood I like to see you conservative as I wish this to my sister, I wish you health and wellness you daughter of the dear nation.
houssin Posted 2007-05-29

حسن بادي Posted 2007-06-21
Najat is a respectabe singer and I love her songs.
rkia Posted 2007-07-31
I like Najat, especially when she sings with her husband Hassan Dikouk. Her appearance (the way she dresses) is just amazing. As for me, this is not very interesting and there is no need to judge.
شادي Posted 2007-08-12
Your singing isn't related to art. Empty words and noise. Compare yourself for instance to Ismahane, no way for comparison.
سناء Posted 2007-08-13
I love listening to the Moroccan artist Najat Aatabou, I like her voice, I tell her don't stay long away. Don't mind the idle talk, I ask you a favour to write a song about me, I'm Sanaa from Tangier, and being away from home which is hurting me, and my lover Abderafik in Spain and I want to hear it with your voice (please).
لبنى Posted 2007-08-16
Salam, I love Najat Atabou.
sanae Posted 2007-08-17
I love the great and respectable artist Najat Atabo. I would like to kiss her as her voice is the voice of the Great Atlas, my greeting to Najat Aatabou.
نزهة من المغرب Posted 2007-08-23
Najat, you have exaggerated- Samira and Nezha tell you that you should be more mature as you are getting older. And you have certainly collected enough money. Set up a project, go on a pilgrimage and repent to God for the clothing you wear. I wonder who the designer is that designs them. I tell you God bless your voice, you sing in Rabat and they hear you in Pakistan. This is a grace from God- you should exploit it for the good, repent to God, thank you.
لبنى Posted 2007-08-24

Good evening, I'm from Algeria and I love the artist Najat.
فيصل من الخبر Posted 2007-10-29
Honestly, the first time I heard her singing was three months ago 'Mentooufat Achaar'. Her voice is very nice, her look and the way she dresses are nice, namely the jeans with stars, and the colour of the jeans which shows that it's of a good brand and original. Oh lady, the great artist Najat Aatabou, go ahead. Hope you'll sing in Bahrain so that we go to your concert their and celebrate you. You're a great star, a smart trousers + a nice song. Thanks to the site, we want more pictures of the artist Najat Aatabou. Faisal from Al Khouber.

Your picture is hung in one of the walls of my house. I love you, I love you, I love you to madness.

Najat, I'm very fond of you. I have a special feeling when I listen to your songs, you're attractive and nice, 'El Adama Mamenouch'. By God I heard many good acts of you, but please stop, keep up on the top and retire. Be always great in our eyes. Your old songs are very nice but the new ones...Please keep up your good style. My hope is to meet you and talk to you. May God grant me this wish and guidance from God. May God protect you and your family.

By God Najat Aatabou. I love to death her songs because she's very respectable.
amina Posted 2008-01-29
Salam alaikoum. Najat Aatabou is an artist with a nice voice. But I noticed that she relies on quick rhythms. Her only will is to make the public dance whether they understand the words, they had a meaning or not. Therefore, I hope to see her in a music album quieter because by God she will be great if she sings with feelings and senses the song she presents, not just words and words without meaning. My greetings and wishes of progress to her and to the Moroccan art. Therefore, I want to add that it’s a shame to sacrifice everything to reach a goal and then disregard in in the end. Salam.
ريضاالكومي Posted 2008-01-29
Najat Aatabou is woman who is popular with her public. That's why I love and respect her.
danar essalek Posted 2008-02-02
Sorry my brother. I will write you about a person who drinks repentance. In his hand he holds a beer, isn’t that right, don’t judge me for something you’re looking for.
fatimazahra Posted 2008-02-03
Salam alaikoum. I would like to say that the best and greatest singer in Morocco is Najat Aatabou. She’s really a respectable person. But people you should be understanding; a famous and beautiful artist should wear fashion clothes. Or what do you want her to wear while standing in front of the fans, a Jellaba and scarf. Shame on you people, she’s free in her life to wear what she wants. God differentiates heads so that they are satisfied. And mind your own business. And from this platform, I address my warmest greetings to my darling Noureddine in Italy. And I say to Najat more fame, we’re waiting for your new works. Thanks
KHMALCHA Posted 2008-02-03
For all the fans of Najat from the 1980s, you can find all his videos from this era with Al Maroufi and their first group at “Taounate Nostalgia”. You will be happy to see that even in her debut she was both the best and innocent. She was another Najat back then and all of Morocco loved her.
معروفي البشير Posted 2008-02-07
Dear brother Karim Abrou from Safi, I thank you for your question about El Maaroufi. I inform you that he lives now in the city of Salé and that he’s well and fine. He works at a private security company. I confirm to you that he still plays the Oud and other musical instruments but alone in his house. Praise be to God because you’re the only one who acknowledged El Maaroufi and his help to Najat Aatabou although he is the only one who used to entertain the town of Lekhmissat with his Oud rhythms in the eighties. Thank you very much once again. Salaam. El Bachir the brother of El Maaroufi. Lekhmisset.
مغربي بقطر Posted 2008-02-10
Fear God in yourself Najat and repent to God, you should take a lesson from those who preceded you in repenting or look at the fate of your colleagues when they get old. It is time to repent my sister in God.
ابرو من اسفي Posted 2008-02-15
Not at all brother El Bachir Al Maaroufi. I wish you and your family health and wellness. To all the people of the town of Lekhmissat: It s our duty to acknowledge even with a little what El Maaroufi contributed to Moroccan and Atlas music in particular. Many of my friends are asking about El Maaroufi. I told them that he works in a security company and lives alone in Salé. They were sorry for him and I was very sorry. I hope that they will invite him some day in a "Massar" (career) program inchallah. We will write the program that without El Maaroufi there would have been no Najat. A sincere greeting from the city of Safi.

najat, words can not explain what i think deepdown about you. it is nice to sing but try to sing religious songs rather than the ones that bring hiccups within the muslim society.i am sorry to say this but as time is very short we have to remind everyone about heaven and hell. god bless every real, practical and pious chap

Personally, I love Najat Aatabou so much. I bought all her albums and videos. I would like to make a website about her.
hmida Posted 2008-04-16
I think that Najat needs to go back and find her roots, like in her debut with El Maaroufi. It is thanks to him that she is a star. Yet, he is battling social problems despite his artistic musical potential. I appeal to Najat to stop abandoning her old band mate, Houssan Ighzar, and to promote Mohamed El Maaroufi and his brother Abderrafii El Maaroufi, the violinists. Thank you Najat for reviving the city of Khemisset. You are our idol.
marwane Posted 2008-04-17
If you really want to see Najat Aatabou, whom all of the Moroccans so love, then type “Najat Aatabou Tounate Nostalgie” into Google or DailyMotion and you will see the real Najat, without make-up. Najat as she was in the 1980s, the most innocent, simple and modest ever. Oh, she was truly the people’s singer. She sang for the people. Now, we see a different Najat who has nothing to do with the one of the 1980s; another Najat who sings for money in order to fill her bank accounts all over the place and buy more luxurious villas and go looking for the latest models of cars, another Najat who changes everything about her body every day. So, watch Najat on Taounate Nostalgie. Thank you, Khmalcha, the gentlemen who shared these rare videos of Najat during her debut.
layla Posted 2008-04-24
If she is a Muslim, then she should not be singing in front of men. She said she left her parents. Be good to your parents. For me, Najat Atabo is dirty she needs to check herself. She should take the example of her friend, Raja Bilamlih, who died. We've had enough of these night girls. We want something good. Women who sing before men and expose their voices and bodies are nice and respectable? Excuse me, this is unworthy of our Islam or our verses.
عبد الله Posted 2008-05-20

I can’t say anything against her, she is one of the rare singers of these times… A greeting to Najat Aatabou who became something from nothing. A greeting to her husband the artist Hassan Dikouk who has developed the singing method of the lady of singing Najat Aatabou… Regarding religious discussions, my brothers in Islam, I would like to tell you to leave the creatures to the creator and the gate of repent is open and wide to everyone who wants, may God reward those who want it… Sincerely yours.

I am Zineb from Khemisset. I like old songs of Najat Aatabou. But these new don’t suit her voice. I hope from Najat Aatabou that she raises the standard of her singing and presents us something reasonable and reduces making gestures when she is on stage. Despite this, my mother is crazy for you. Your songs are associated with her past. Anyway, I wish you long live and a good future for your kids. I wish to talk to you directly.

In the name of God the most gracious the most merciful. Singing is forbidden. I don’t doubt that you believe in God and witness that there is no other God but Allah and that Mohamed is the messenger of God. Oh Lord guide us among those you have guided. The door of repentance is open. If only you catch up to enter it. I am sorry because you are a derision and a clown whether in your revealing clothes or random dancing.

مريم Posted 2008-09-06
Do you know what Najat said in the soiree of Naghma Wa Atai? She said that she will keep on singing until she dies on the stage. What is this idle wish? People wish for a good end. How will she meet her father when she dies with her make-up? What can we say to God? May God guide her and all artists and to her daughter who sits with singers instead of teaching her to be decent. She made her wear a robe. May God protect and guide everyone oh Lord.

I want to address you an advice Najat Aatabou during this holy month for the sake of God. It is to repent to God. Act for your life as if you are going to die tomorrow and act for your afterlife as if you are going to live eternally. Fear God my sister. I am sorry if I made you angry.

وساط عثمان Posted 2008-09-25
Hello. Peace, mercy and blessings of God be upon you. I want to tell you Najat that you must ask for forgiveness and sincerely repent to God the Almighty. He will certainly forgive you and accept your repentance. Death is certainly coming. I don’t want you to die while you are at this level of singing. The angel of death knows “What a book is this! It does not omit a small one nor a great one”, “Except he who comes to Allah with a heart free from evil”, “no intercession avail except of him whom the Beneficent God allows” and says the truth. If you want a face to face debate, I am ready. I am from the town of Guelmima. I work in the transport sector.
najat Posted 2008-10-02
Najat has an unequalled and striking voice. Her private life needs to be respected. As for the veiled women and bearded men who severely criticised her, I tell them that God does not need them to defend His religion. And, since they are so sure that they are going to Paradise, all the better for them: just leave people alone. They have done more harm to than good in trying to convert people to their new Islam, which can be summarised in their bearded impotence and veiled ugliness. In Paradise, it is for certain that the most people will be wanting to listen to Najat while drinking wine with some pretty girls. So, how can you claim that Najat is going to Hell?
نزهة Posted 2008-10-03
The way a person dresses isn’t the business of anyone. We shouldn’t mix things up. The voice of Najat is great. She is undoubtedly a great artist. Despite all the void comments, or compare Najat to another artist. Everyone has her own way. I love Najat if I don’t say that I adore her. Nothing to be criticized for, she is a true artist.

Shame on you, Najat is really great, nice, distinct and has a strong personality. I admire her so much. But my request to you Najat is to stop saying that you will never retire until you die on stage. This is a shame darling. My sister stay on top, no hip hop songs, where are the old great nice and impressive songs. Your voice is great. Try to make quiet songs. We wish a long and happy life with your handsome husband and nice kids. It is truly a nice family. In your recent soiree in Ramadan, you were very nice and your performance was great. It is enough sister, try, try, this is enough. A long career of soirees, adventures, travels and trips, this is enough. You have entertained us a lot. This is enough… Your sister Farida.

You have children, you want any harm for them? For me, singing is not recognized. I love my country and don’t accept indecent words about my nation and your nation. I hope that you will return to God, repent to Him hoping that He will be happy with you. The satisfaction of people will be of no use to you.

Firstly, Najat is the first in the Arab World. This is proved by the fact that Americans stole her songs and they succeeded in this. Secondly, those who talk about religion shouldn’t enter an art site. Thirdly, who is this Ismahane, nothing. There is no way for comparison. The way Najat dresses is decent and not very showy as in the east or other artists. She is a member of the people and deserves respect.

احمد عبد الرحيم Posted 2009-01-19
An illiterate, stupid and base artist who only runs after money. There is no power and no will but from God. She appeared during a period of mediocrity. She doesn’t distinguish between the popular art which is the heritage of the nation and vulgar art reiterated by anyone such as Daoudi, Daoudia and Aatabou.

flordeloto Posted 2009-02-02
When will we stop judging people and try to be happy??? There are people who want to compare themselves to God, saying what things are good and what things are bad. Music is a natural art, which makes people’s lives more beautiful and easier. All those people who only turn their lives into a court to judge others are bigger sinners than anyone else in this world.

You are a wonderful singer. You are fascinating, God bless you. God granted you talent, a nice voice, smile and your honesty. You know sister Najat, my father is a cultivated man and is crazy for you and your songs. He especially likes your song “Don’t cry, don’t drop tears”. Really great. My sister married abroad. When she was about to leave, he started weeping and singing for her “Don’t cry, don’t drop tears”. I tell you don’t mind the envious. They comment the way you dress or the way you sing. The proverb says if you can’t reach grapes, you say they are sour. You are the best of women. I am crazy for you darling. May God protect for you Hasan the sweet. You match each other. You are an ideal couple. Bless you. May God protect you and protect your children. Please, I have a request darling. To know that you read my message, I will give you my msn, just leave me an sms telling me that you read what I wrote for you darling. May God protect you from the eyes of the enemies who envy you. God the Almighty said “But when they neglected that with which they had been admonished, We opened for them the doors of all things, until when they rejoiced in what they were given We seized them suddenly”. My sister Najat Aatabou, you seem to be kind but your kindness won’t be of any good for Islam…You are destroying society with your voice, you transform meetings into meetings of evil, drunkenness, vice and exposure. Fear God and don’t be happy with what you have received. This doesn’t require any joy since it is in the disobedience of God. Remember what your Creator said “We draw them near by degrees from whence they know not”. I am concerned about unless you have a dreadful end because honestly you have been singing and playing for long years. Hasn’t time come for you to repent and retire? If someone lives on something he will die in the same way. If you die on something, you will be resuscitated in the same way. So do you wish to be resuscitated on the day of judgment singing???

I love Najat Atabou so much, and her brother as well- he was my teacher. I love you.
شاكرة Posted 2009-03-03
Honestly, I love Najat to death. I wish her more health and fame. I wish to meet her anywhere to tell her I love you so much since I was young I listen to all your songs. I send you my greetings and the greetings of the people of Salé.
naima Posted 2009-03-06
First of all, salam to all the Moroccans and Moroccan singers and, most especially, Najat Aatabou- Honestly, I love her so much, and the reasons are many: firstly, I am a Moroccan girl; secondly, I am Berber of Khemisset origin; thirdly, she sings about, discusses and speaks of the daily matters and the real-life problems of women with their loved ones; and, lastly, she went through a difficult, hard period in her childhood. Najat, I would like you to re-think reliving and again singing your Berber songs, because I adore listening to your Berber/Tamazigh songs. In the end, I wish you a life full of joy, love and prosperity. You will always be the best!

Repent to God sister before time comes to travel to the afterlife and you will regret but regrets will not be of any value. You are misleading many creatures of God with your cursed voice, the voice of Satan. Remedy the situation.
nasrat Posted 2009-03-22
I love Najat Aatabou.

Najat Aatabou "Mother, what did I do? By God I miss you...until God stops separation".
salima Posted 2009-04-01
I would like to tell you, Najat, that you are a very beautiful woman. God gave you this quality, so think about Him a little bit. I used to love you, but not anymore. I heard about the song “Cocan” and I cried. It was not your song that made me cry, but the words of God. Everything you are doing is the devil's work. I know you are not dumb – you are very intelligent – so I know that you can do it- greetings, kisses.

In singing, I like Najat Aatabou so much and her voice. But the way she dances, sometimes you would think she is a shikha (popular dancer) in addition to the words. But these days, I heard a rumour. Thank you. Finally, I say she divorced and married a rich Emirate man. Is this true or not? But she is a nice artist.

Najat Aatabou is the best thing I heard. Her songs reach the heart.
nada Posted 2009-04-30
Salam. My sister Najat. I am one of your fans. I love so much your songs. I wish you more prominence in your artistic life. Don't care about the gossip of people. If you want to do something you must just be convinced of it. No one can come from far away and impose on you things you don't want.
سعاد من الحسيمة Posted 2009-05-06
My sister, I love you to madness. Your songs make me forget me the trouble and problems which I encounter in my life. As regards comments I read, they are jealous of you. Go ahead my sister Najat. If they can reach their ears let them eat them.
amal Posted 2009-05-13
Salam my sister Najat. I like so much “la llah yakhabdak”. Your sister Amal.

Peace, mercy and blessings of God be upon you. A nice greeting my sister Najat Aatabou. I wish you more success and fame in your artistic career.

Najat, my life, I love you, love your words. I imitate you in your voice especially in the programme Comedia in which I participated this year. Ask El Khiyari if you want to make sure about this. In my family, everyone loves you. However, in spite of all these esteems, this won't help you with God. This is just life and it is ephemeral. But the afterlife is eternal. Please think of “retiring”. The door of repentance is open. I ask God to guide to all the good. This is in your interest. I would like to say you're beautiful and will always be loved by everyone. Thank you. Transmit my thanks to your husband and all members of your family.
khadija Posted 2009-07-06
I don't want to say anything about Najat Aatabou. What the brothers have said is enough. I just want to reply to the sister Ahlam who said that Najat Aatabou is a disbeliever. I advise the sister Ahlam to fear God because we cannot say this is a believer or this is a Muslim. Remember the disbelieving woman who entered paradise for offering food to a dog. Therefore sister in God forget, forget about accusing people of disbelief because this is not stipulated in our tolerant religion. I hope you will follow this advice. Thank you. I hope you will read this reply.

Salam. Najat Atabou is a great artist and has a wonderful future. I love her because she hails from the same town as me. I wish her happiness and success in her songs. We are waiting for more of her great songs. Thank you.

Noisy songs. A nice voice.
naïma Posted 2009-10-02
Salam alikum. You are sincerely niece. But you have to crown your kindness with the crown of veil and repentance from singing which will compensate your sins with good deeds, God willing. Oh Lord accept my prayer. I love you in God.
mohamed Posted 2009-10-06
God bless you, I wish you from God repentance.
يسرا من المانيا Posted 2009-10-07
Peace and mercy of God be upon you. By God, singing, money, fame and fans won't help you in any way. It is only your good deeds that will help and your sincere repentance. Fear God; you should know that singers are criers of hell on the day of judgment, God forbid.
asmae de france Posted 2009-10-07
I am sorry. Fortunately, the people who criticise her are in the minority. She can dress how she wants. She moves on stage without any problems. She is who she is. She is Moroccan and she will stay that way. Stop criticising Najat. She has demonstrated on stage that she can do anything, no matter what it is. I hope that my sister Najat will respond to me. I would be the happiest person in the whole world. I listen to her songs all the time, as do my two daughters.
ليلى Posted 2009-10-12
Salam Najat. I am Laila from Safi. I like your old and new songs, especially songs you did with your husband. But is it true you are divorced? Men are not trustworthy. Never mind, men are only dogs. Never mind what people say. It is just an obsession. The way you dress is fascinating. I like it. Your make-up is also good, God bless you and grant you long life so that we will keep on listening to your new songs. You're beautiful; may God protect you. Your children are also beautiful. May God protect them for you. Your voice is unique. I know all your songs by heart especially "Sebara yami sebara" ("Patient, mother, patient"). When my mother listens to it, she weeps. God bless you. Thank you very much. We hope to listen to your new songs in concerts. Salam.

Salam the most beautiful Moroccan artist Najat Aatabou. I am very happy to write you this article. Najat you are one of the best Moroccan voices who gave so much to the Moroccan art. But I have noticed that the first and second channels don't invite you very often. I say Najat you are in the heart. I like so much your songs such as Moudawana, Kedba Bayana, Choufi Ghirou, J'enai marre...I love you from my heart. I hope you will present us new songs. I love you in your soirées and the dresses you wear are the top by God.
