Security Council Extends UN Mission in Southern Morocco

29/10/2004

The UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution on Thursday (28 October) to extend the UN mission in southern Morocco, known as MINURSO, through 30 April, 2005. The Security Council asked UN Secretary General Kofi Annan to report on the possibility of reducing the operation’s size and called on all parties in the region to continue co-operating with the UN to find a political solution for the Western Sahara issue. MINURSO was deployed in September 1991 to monitor a ceasefire between Morocco and the Algeria-backed Polisario separatists who claim the area called Western Sahara. (www.un.org, MAP)
