Former Mauritania coup leader declares presidential candidature

30/06/2009

One day after Mauritania's Constitutional Council launched a 48-hour call for submission of presidential candidature applications, Colonel Ely Ould Mohamed Vall on Monday (June 29th) officially declared his intention to run in the July 18th elections. Vall led the 2005 military coup that ousted President Maaouya Ould Sid'Ahmed Taya's regime. Also Monday, the FNDD nominated National Assembly Speaker Messaoud Ould Boulkheir as the opposition coalition's official candidate.

Former junta leader Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, former RFD party chief Kane Hamidou Baba, AJD-MR party chief Sarr Ibrahima Moctar and former Prime Minister Sghair Ould M'bareck have already been approved to run in next month's presidential elections.
