Algerian convicted for 2001 Paris bomb plot faces extradition from France

04/01/2009

Convicted Algerian terrorist Djamel Beghal, currently serving a 10-year sentence in France for plotting a 2001 al-Qaeda attack against the American embassy in Paris, is likely to be extradited to Algeria in March, El Khabar quoted Beghal's defence source as saying on Sunday (January 4th). Beghal was arrested at Dubai International Airport on his way back from Afghanistan in July of 2001. He confessed to helping plan the al-Qaeda operation in which Tunisian Nizar Trabelsi, a former professional football player in Germany, would be the designated suicide bomber. In 2005, French authorities convicted Beghal and five others for planning the attacks. Beghal has since retracted his confession.
