Sahel ministers attend security meeting in Mali

12/11/2008

Algerian Minister for African and Maghreb Affairs Abdelkader Messahel and foreign ministers from Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso and Chad met Tuesday (November 11th) in Bamako for a summit on peace and security development of the Sahel region. Last night, they issued a statement urging heads of state to take "appropriate measures to fight all forms of terrorism". The event was organised in preparation for the upcoming meeting of Sahel heads of state on fighting terrorism and criminal networks in the region, AFP reported. Mauritania was not invited.

In related news, Mauritanian junta leader Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz was invited on Tuesday (November 11th) by Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, the emir of Kuwait, to attend an Arab economic summit in January, Journal Tahalil reported. It is his first official invitation from a foreign government since the August 6th coup which overthrew elected President Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdellahi, the article noted.
