IMF urges Algeria to accelerate economic reforms

07/11/2007

At a press conference in Algiers, Amar Tahari, deputy director of the IMF Middle East and Central Asia department, called on Algeria to "accelerate the economic reforms" and to solve the problem with unemployment, Algerian press reported on Monday (November 5th). "The purpose of the economic reforms is to come to a level of economic growth enough for the creation of jobs," Tahari said. He hailed the quality of the reforms launched in Algeria, but underlined that GDP growth, which stands at 4.8% currently, will remain insufficient in the next years. A 5.2% growth is expected for 2008, while 7% is recommended by IMF in order to reach concrete objectives.
